That Tonga volcano was really something, right? The satellite pics of it going up were so cool.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2022-01-15 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that tsunami the eruption caused sure was awesome!

Yes. As someone hugely obsessed with volcanoes, it was awesome to watch.

If anyone on this site is from Tonga/surrounding areas & countries, are you okay?

I am amazed how well and detailed we can track these Events nowadays.
Theres evidence of the Event all around the world, either via sound (boom was heard in alaska FFS) or barometric pressure changing abruptly.

I do hope tho that folks are safe. Just heard of tsunami warning in chile.

I’m not sure how I feel about this being the only takeaway from this natural disaster that might have killed people. Especially because you’re not the only one in this thread with that same mindset.

It was an amazing show, but I'm worried about the people living nearby. That's a lot of ash and debris, and a meter of water flowing through people's houses and businesses is no joke.

Health PSA

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't take diet pills. They can damage your heart muscles and put you at both immediate and future coronary risk.

Re: Health PSA

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
adding that they can also wreck your intestines, your kidneys and liver. Depending on what BS is in there.

Also, taking meds and having grapefruit is a recipe for disaster. Heartmeds are especially bad for it, but also some psychiatric meds and cancer meds.
Protip: if you start any RX meds regularly, just dont ingest any grapefruit stuff.

Better than expected

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I just Lil Nas X's Montero and I actually liked the song. I don't know why everywhere online (outside of the whole omg he's giving the devil a lap dance) people were saying it wasn't that good of a song. The radio station played Maroon 5 "So Close" after and I thought they could have replayed Montero!

Anyway, what, in your opinion was better than what most people said about it?

Re: Better than expected

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it too. One thing I dig about Lil Nas X is that his songs are SHORT. They last however long they need to without getting boring for this reason.

His EP is like that and his latest album is. I like that this is his thing and he doesn't stretch things out for a record company.

Writer Thread

[personal profile] ofc_nonny 2022-01-15 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi y'all, I'm editing a fic right now and I thought it'd be good to open a thread on the weekend for writers to talk about anything on their mind. Questions, tips, ideas, brainstorming, anything you want to talk about in regards to what you're writing or thinking about or even what your writing process is like, please share!

Re: Writer Thread

I joined a writing group a few weeks ago and more and more I've been just sort of lurking in the Discord quietly discomfited at how different my way of writing is from almost everyone else there. They talk about character questionnaires and spreadsheets and plot cards and how if they don't know beforehand that their character hates lemon how could they EVER write ANYTHING. Even if their story has nothing to do with lemons in any way, shape, or form.

Meanwhile I'm all mid-scene writing and going 'well, kay, I need a new character here so this is Bob and he is this, this, and this, that are relevant to the story and if I need to make more up for him later, will do?'

I know both writing methods are perfectly valid but I've never been in a group that skews so heavily towards one side of things. They're very nice to me, don't get me wrong, but... o.o

Health-related question

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
About half a year ago I noticed that I was finding it slightly harder to get my rings over my knuckles. After six months a lot of my rings don't fit on the fingers they used to fit on anymore. I can't really tell if my fingers have gotten bigger too, or just my knuckles. The change is too minor to be visible. I have very long, skinny fingers, so I'd never even know they were bigger if I didn't wear rings.

What's got me worried is that in the last month or so I've woken up a couple of times with stiff, aching fingers. The feeling is sort of like I'd been gripping something tight for a long time until my fingers started to lock up.

I haven't gained so much as a pound.

I did start taking a new medication (modafinil) about eight months ago, but joint swelling and stiffness aren't listed in the side effects.

I'm worried it's some kind of arthritis, but there's no history of arthritis in my family. Plus I'm only 34 and I'm physically really healthy, so IDK.

Has anybody ever experienced anything like this?

Do you do alot of work with your hands / fingers? Typing, Gaming, delicate working

You mention your fingers have been stiff and aching when waking up but does that sensation go up into your wrists as well or a numb sensation? Because it could be a sign of carpal tunnel.

Or it could be a sign of infection. Your body trying to retain fluid for some reason and its going into your knuckles.

Definitely something to bring up with your doctor.

Has your diet changed at all? Not weight, but what you eat? I know for me I have to eat low carb because more than one carb-heavy meal in a day causes inflammation/swelling in my joints. But if I stick to a lower carb diet, I'm totally fine.

Secret maker here...

(Anonymous) 2022-01-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
About a week ago, someone else (not me!) started this comment secret thread:

https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/2539981.html?thread=1078387661&posted=1

I had a busy week and there were a lot of comments, so I couldn't get to them right away but I bookmarked the thread for later. I think I've managed to work through all of them now and have marked them "claimed" per an earlier request. AFAIK, none of them had been "claimed" by another secret maker, or if they did, they didn't mark it. Which is why I'm posting here as a heads up.

Thanks, FS!

New mattress rant (feel free to share your mattress rants, too)

(Anonymous) 2022-01-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I just got a new mattress. After reading a ton of reviews and shopping around, I went with one of the bed-in-a-box varieties because I wanted to try memory foam. I specifically selected a mattress that offered a "plush" option because I'm 5'8", 115lbs, and a side-sleeper.

It arrived five days ago and goddamn it that thing is firm. I didn't sleep at all the first night, and have slept very poorly every night since because it's so hard. When I sit cross-legged on it, I get a sore ass! I wish I was joking!

I really wish sellers and reviewers would be more clear about the fact that for people of my weight and sleep-position, memory foam tends to be a lot more expensive and tricky than it is for most people. I did a lot of research and nothing I read ever told me, "Listen. Your boney little shoulder and hip are going to sit right on top of these sub-$1K options that claim to be 'plush'. You want to sink into a memory foam bed? Hit up Tempur-Pedic, Purple, and those other $2500+ options. Otherwise, bitch, good luck."

Fortunately I bought from Costco, so I can return it. I'm still annoyed, though.

I think I'm going to buy a cheap-ass mattress and a 3" memory foam topper and hope that works out a little better. *fingers crossed*
