sort of off topic, sorry, but I was literally wondering about this when I opened fs.

I like SF shows but I never got into trek before. I'm not a fan of old special effects. However, a few months ago I was out of things to watch and I watched Voyager. Then I started TNG and am a few eps away from finishing. I like both shows. I watched the first 2 eps of DISCO when it started and was not into it but that was a lifetime ago so I was wondering if maybe I should give it another try. Except people mentioning it's not very trek-like are giving me pause. I'm not in the mood for darker SF atm, because, well, *gestures vaguely at the world around us* so I'm guessing I shouldn't try DISCO?

Which one should I watch next? How bad is the original with special effects? Is there one that I should avoid? The secret from a few days ago about DS9 being militaristic makes me think that one might not be for me.

TOS is a good show and it's fairly optimistic, but the special effects are not great. If that's something that's an issue for you, it will probably be a problem with TOS. You could give the movies a try though, because the production quality is generally a lot higher on those.

DS9 is a great show but yeah, it's definitely darker, so probably not something you want to watch right now.

DA with a caveat - If you're skipping straight to the movies, skip the first one and start with Wrath of Khan. Star Trek the Motion Picture (aka the first one) is pretty, but it's kind of a slog.

Ya gotta enjoy TMP the way it was made and intended, with a shitload of weed. Grab some gummies, roll a blunt, sit back and enjoy.

Truly.

It's not a Trek but you might like Farscape.

Farscape is funny, yes, but it's also incredibly bleak.

TOS is '60s sci-fi at its finest - which basically means that, yes, the special effects aren't great. The stories range from cheesy fun to some of the best sci-fi that era has to offer. If you can get past the dated look, I'd highly recommend at least trying it.

DS9 is my personal favorite Star Trek series - it's darker than TNG, but it was also the first ST show to benefit from the rise in the number of ongoing storylines in the late '90s/early 2000s, so it has a more modern TV sensibility than TNG or TOS.

As for other sci-fi series that I'd rec, Space: 1999 has a similar mix of considered, cerebral plots and absolute buffoonery as the best of Star Trek, Babylon 5 is one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time (though it might get a bit dark for what you're looking for), and Farscape is ridiculous and I love it.

The good thing about most of the Star Trek series is that you can skip around the episodes a fair bit without getting lost. Also, there's really nothing in TOS left to be spoiled. So, maybe pick a couple of the more acclaimed (or notorious, depending on your mood) episodes to try out and if you can look past the 60s cheesiness you can go back and watch from the beginning.

City on the Edge of Forever is one of the most acclaimed TOS episodes and takes place almost entirely in 1930, so that's a good one if you want a TOS episode whose effects won't be so jarring.

If you don’t mind animated stuff, I think Lower Decks is probably the best newer Trek for more lighthearted sci-fi.

DS9 is definitely darker than TNG and Voyager but it comes from the same era and has similar enough vibes you might be okay with it.

TOS has some pretty dated special effects but its fun.

The first two or three eps of Disco are a bit offputting. Dark tone, odd aesthetics, still finding their feet.

Once I got past that though... I found the end of the s1 story intensely moving - it starts dark but really hammers into the Starfleet utopian ideal. Investigating the temptation to use morally pragmatic, ruthless, evil tactics, and why we shouldn't do that. So... yes, it has a darker aesthetic, but it keeps to the spirit of the franchise.

S2 was also interesting - they brought in another of those omnipotent beings that infest the canon, quoted a variation of Clarke's Law: "Is sufficiently advanced technology indistinguishable from godhood? If so, what then?" and... really dug into that.

I found s3 disappointing, unfortunately. Haven't tried s4 yet, because it's no longer available in my country.

tl;dr Yes, it has its flaws, but the first two seasons (at least) are worth taking a look at. Though... "I'm not in the mood for darker SF atm" I cannot lie, Disco is dark.

this
Also most of the characters ain't assholes when you know a bit more about them.

I couldn't get through season 4 because SPOILER another bombed planet. It was made more tastefully than in the movie, but I just noped out of it.

The fact that each season is a story is reason enough to deep six it. I have no patience for them dragging one episode's worth of story across a whole season. Just fucking get it over with and move onto another adventure. Fucking season arcs, so much filler and padding and pointless running in circles in case they accidentally resolve things too early.

Sounds like you need a nap.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-14 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I agree with this anon, though. I love long arcs, but they are out of place in disco
