Chris Rock was like "That's the joke I get hit for??"

Re: Celebrity/media news

The thing is, Chris Rock was in a very literal sense doing what he was paid to do. I agree that the joke was in bad taste but his job was to tell spicy jokes to engender controversy and juice the ratings. And the Oscars really succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in that regard.

Yeah, I thought it was either a big overreaction, or, just my theory, it was completely staged and planned from the beginning.

It was a bad joke and I get why Smith would be mad (assuming it wasn't staged). Just, also think people should probably be getting mad at the Oscars themselves here, not just Rock and Smith.

Also I'm not ready to say it was staged, but if incidents like this and the Moonlight thing keep happening at the Oscars, at some point it's going to start getting mighty suspicious.

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
It definitely wasn't staged. When he won Best Actor he tearfully apologized in his speech to the Academy and his fellow nominees - but not to Rock. Today he issued a formal statement of apology to Rock. Also the Academy released info that there might be some kind of investigation and disciplinary measure.

Honest human error. The Moonlight thing - that was on Beatty and Dunaway, IMO. Beatty knew right away something wasn't right with the card he was handed (It was the one for Best Actress, had the category name and Emma Stone's name on it, right there. He should have said something.)

I get that it's all showbiz and all - and the lines get blurred, Amy Schumer's apparent diss of Kirsten Dunst really was a staged skit that everyone was in on, it just landed really badly right after the Smith incident. But for such a big-budget polished production they actually do screw up more than you'd think.

He was getting paid to make jokes, not pick on someone for their disability in a forum where he didn't expect to get any real pushback.

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
He was getting paid to make jokes, and I think specifically to make jokes that would be a little outrageous and push the boundaries. He went too far - it was absolutely a shitty joke to make. But I think the Oscars wanted controversy and set the situation up for that and they got it.

Alopecia is a medical condition, but it is not a disability.

Re: Celebrity/media news

So are cancer and anxiety, but it's not cool to make fun of people for their medical conditions.

ayrt - it is often linked to lupus and other autoimmune disorders so it is really usually a warning sign that worse is yet to come. it was for me.

I mean, it was an awful joke in really bad taste. But this isn't the age where men need to protect "their" woman's honor. Jada was perfectly capable of protecting herself, and Will could have just yelled. He didn't need to take it there. That was not for his wife, it was for himself.

You've never wanted to physically stand up for someone you love? Violence isn't the answer but it being an impulse doesn't have to be "OMG PATRIARCHY" or whatever.

An instinct, yes. But to actually do it physically like that, without asking the person actually insulted, is absolutely the patriarchy in this case.

+1000

Will Smith has now made it OK for anyone to jump up on stage and attack a comedian for telling a joke they don't like.

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Good, tho. I want more comedians thinking "is someone gonna walk up here and slap my soul out of me?" before making a shitty punch-down joke.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize this behavior plays right into the hands of edgy "PC culture" haters? This won't stop anyone from making punch-down jokes, but it will give people more ammo for "see you can't even make a joke anymore without being punched onstage." Comedians will start getting bodyguards for show and joking about the fact that they "need them."

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
The commenter above me is right, this will not stop these comedians from making punch-down jokes. And this might actually make things worse.

But I still must say, it is a big funny that so many comedians, especially comedians that pride themselves on being “not afraid to tell jokes that make people uncomfortable” and “fearless and willing to tell it like it is without caring about what happens” are so clearly scared shitless of being next. Pretty much all of them are speaking out about this, and condemning Smith for it. Some, like Judd Apatow I can buy as legitimately thinking Smith crossed a line(which he did), without having an ulterior motive for speaking out. I don’t know him well enough to know for sure though. But others definitely make it seem like they’re really afraid of actually having consequences for some of their bad taste jokes for once, consequences that are more than just a hashtag campaign that does no real damage. The consequences being violence is obviously an overreaction that shouldn’t happen(especially on live TV), but it’s still funny how transparently scared these supposedly “brave” comedians are. And even Kathy Griffin had something to say, and it’s like , really?

And then their are the idiots who are claiming this incident was “an attack on free speech”. For the last time, that’s not what free speech means, you morons. Unless they actually think Will Smith is the government. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences, no matter how unwarranted and over the top those consequences may be.

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No. People shouldn't have to fear being physically assaulted for doing their job.

Are some jokes absolutely shitty, and/or told with shitty timing? Yes! And comedians should be able to tell them even if it pisses off the world.

Likewise, people are free to tell comedians that they found their joke shitty. And they're also free to listen to someone they deem less offensive.

I don't believe comedy should be censored. If you don't like someone's comedy, you can say your piece, and then move on with your life.

No idea what you mean by this. She's a woman with a medical condition who was mocked for said condition.

Are you trying to talk about that cheating thing I’ve also seen mentioned on YouTube? I won’t ask you to explain it if so, but I would like to at least know if it’s been proven or admitted or not.

That's what I don't get. The joke was so tame for Chris Rock and Will Smith has heard so much worse from so many other people about his wife.

I hope Will is okay - if this wasn't staged then maybe it was some sort of mental breakdown or the beginning of one.

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I’m not familiar with Chris Rock as a stand up comedian, just his movie roles, so I didn’t know this was considered game for him. It still crossed a line, but so did Smith slapping him.

I do honestly feel the same way, in worrying about Will Smith. This seems out of character, and he could be going through something behind the scenes.

Re: Celebrity/media news

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Some people think this was just a final straw type thing. Chris Rock also made fun of Jada Pinkett-Smith in 2016 at the Oscars for boycotting them and for being upset about Will Smith not getting nominated for 'Concussion' - which was honestly weird because it was about the lack of diversity. But even if that did play a part, it still seems like a huge overreaction, so I feel like something is missing from the narrative.
