What fan faves do you hate?

Re: Based on 1

(Anonymous) 2022-04-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Data from Star Trek. I just hate all the cringe comedy that surrounded his character. It was too heavy on the cringe, too light on the comedy.

I don't hate Data but there are definitely moments where the way they write him is painfully corny. Almost after-school-special.

Severus Snape. Draco Malfoy. When I was into Potter those two were among my least favorite characters.

Boba Fett is the most overrated SW character in my opinion. I wouldn't even care about him except his popularity makes me hate him.

It isn't hate so much as a complete disinterest, but Peter Parker/Spider Man is one of my least favorite superheroes. I just don't care about any version of him.

Snape, I don't really like but I can at least understand why some people like him. Draco makes no sense to me.

Feel you on your HP picks. With Boba Fett, I hated him so much dealing with original trilogy fanboys, but have been enjoying Book of Boba Fett (if only because some of those fanboys were so vocal in hating him having... an actual character instead of just being a cool set of armor)

I kind of hate Meg from Supernatural-- it never felt like her redemption arc was equal to the harm she did. I don't enjoy hating her, there are a lot of elements of her that I really like, but the whole of how she is in the show just left me with a bad taste in my mouth, like... she's responsible for the deaths/torture of multiple beloved characters, and in the end she doesn't even reform out of genuine growth/remorse, she goes from being in an 'enemy of my enemy' situation to 'well I'll do good because I like a boy', which just feels... gross/insulting? Maybe if she hadn't died so soon after that point, romantic feeling could have been a catalyst to actual growth, but as it was, it felt like lip service to the idea of redemption, with everyone just happy to forget past harm she'd done. Felt like less of a grudge was held against her for everything she'd done than was held against Jack, who was like, three. (weirdly, I can fully enjoy fanon Meg, depending on the writer)

In contrast, I don't hate canon Benny but I wind up hating a lot of fanon Benny.

I feel you on Draco. Snape is a complicated character, so I can see why people like him, or at least find him interesting. Draco, not so much. I always just wanted to slap him through the pages, not delve more into his character.

Re: Based on 1

Maybe it's because I'm too old to have grown up with Harry Potter, but I don't get the Snape and Draco love, either. I mean, I get the whole "BUT MY LOVE CAN CHANGE HIM" and identifying with a character who isn't one of the cool kids and Alan Rickman was good looking and all the reasons other people liked them, but I just never felt it. My reaction go Draco was just "Go away little twerp."

I absolutely loathe James Gillies on Murdoch Mysteries-- his first episode I actually really enjoyed, but by the first time he came back from the dead I was just sick to death of him, and like... it's not a big fandom, but so MANY of the fans I know are obsessed with the little twerp.

John Sheppard. Steve Rogers. Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And it's literally only as I'm typing them that I realise there's a theme ...

I’m with you on all three. I guess I have a them too lol.

With you on Gibbs so much. Hate him. Not big on Sheppard either, though I dislike McKay more.

I'd like to argue, though, that Steve is nothing at all like Gibbs and that comparison is an insult.

Since a lot of Lost Tomb secrets are coming up right now...

Ultimate Note

While the leads have good chemistry with each other and there was a half-decent fight choreographer, that's all I can say for it.

The tomb sets are average ranging to mediocre; the camera-work is full of the kind of bland, shadowless, mid-range shots that daytime soaps and 90s era Trek used to get as much vaguely usable footage in the can per day as possible at the expense of aesthetics or drama; it's meaner to female characters than it needs to be; Black Glasses and Little Flower are insipid big-eyed bishi versions of their usual selves; the script as a whole lacks savour or insight; all in all it feels like the production team cut its teeth on romantic comedies and slacked off on everything that didn't fit that genre frame. And I *like* romantic comedies, but there is so much fucking more to the story than that.

pantswarrior: A montage of several crystals from the Final Fantasy series. (final fantasy)

I don't HATE it, in fact I rather like some parts of it (see Sephiroth cosplay that I pull out whenever I get the chance) and to me FF is like ice cream - even if it's not your favorite flavor, it's still ice cream... but FF7 is one of my least favorite Final Fantasy games overall.

Which is not to say it's bad. I enjoyed it. Just I really, really love the series as a whole and often have the urge to replay one, and I almost never get the craving for 7, or any of the tons of offshoots it's acquired because it's the most popular one.

I love FF7 beyond words, but I get where you’re coming from. I also love every other Final Fantasy game, so that helps.

I always disliked Sasuke, I'm not sure if that's as much of an unpopular stance as it was when the show was airing but I still hate the bugger and hated that Sakura got lumped with him. She didn't deserve that.

I never hated Tony but I did get tired of him taking over the spot light in any movie he appeared in. I got why he is loved: he was snarky and RDJ played him well, but that didn't stop me from becoming fatigued with his character over time.

I never liked Stiles as much as the rest of TW fandom seemed to, again like Tony it was me getting fatigued with the 'quippy' character-type over time. I seem to have a patience limit with those kinds of characters and eventually it hits zero and I never want to see them again(or at least only see them minimally).

Similarly: Jaskier. My god he annoys the ever loving shit out of me and I was so happy he was barely in s2. I know he won't go away but I will continue to tune him out so I can enjoy the characters I like.

All the shinigami in Bleach but especially Hitsugaya. I just enjoyed the earlier chapters so much more when the series was about Ichigo and his friends and I find the pivot to being all about the shinigami the point where everything went downhill. Hitsugaya gets special mention for being extra popular and also extra boring. Heck, Soul Society in general is right there with the Wizarding World in Harry Potter as an example of an author writing an accidental dystopia and apparently being completely unaware of it.
