You didn't ask for my opinion, but I'd say "people hating on a movie in a way that shows they've never seen it." Someone nitpicking a movie in a way that shows they've seen it a million times is annoying but more forgivable than ignorance. If you're gonna come into my house and criticize my couch, at least know what color it is.

Nobody likes a smug asshole but an ignorant one is even worse and potentially far more dangerous to the success of a film thanks to social media.

I literally do not see how "someone engaged with this movie several times and can't stop talking shit about it" would be worse, I guess. A little sillier and indicative of underlying shameful fascination, maybe, but worse?

IDk that kind of hatewatching seems to have a really strong tendency to get toxic and out-of-control.

I actually thought about that, but I don't think the people who talk about media they haven't seen are always distinguishable in that regard.

That's fair.

If they're dumb enough to repeatedly waste money on tickets for a movie they hate, I guess it might be worse for their wallet.

I'm honestly not seeing what's so bad about the second one. You can genuinely enjoy something and still think parts of it were done terribly, and oftentimes the more you love something, the more frustrated you get with the shitty parts because it's like "this could have been great if it weren't for [X]."

The "I've never seen this, but..." people are some of the worst, in my opinion. How can you give a proper opinion or advice on something you never even saw? Reading reviews doesn't count, since you're gathering information and forming opinions based on other people's opinions and biases, which may be completely wrong. At least the person who spent money on actually watching it knows what they're talking about.

I think those that judge without watching are way, way worse. Some of my fav. series are the ones I'm most critical of BECAUSE I know them inside and out and have a passionate interest in flaws in the plot/world building/characters arcs. You wouldn't know I love a series if you heard me engage in a vehement rant about the flaws of it, and that was all you knew of my involvement in the fandoms, but yeah. I love these canons. I love them ferociously and enjoy tearing into them to see what makes them tic and keeping track of all the stupid, little inconsistencies that come from long running series. I love seeing how people reconcile the flaws in the world building. I love reworking it myself in fanfic. I love a lot of series. But the ones I'm passionate enough to write fanfic and engage in discourse and trade headcanons about are ALWAYS the series that I find are deeply, incredibly, MAGNIFICENTLY flawed.

The canons I love but I don't gush about online or write fic for are all ones that--I consider them, not perfect, but perfect *enough*.

But it's the flawed, messy canons that I'm a fan of, that I will tear to shreds, that I will dove deep into and see how I can make it work with the creator's intent. So, yeah, I absolutely and definitely will rip a series to shreds. But it's how I love a show.

I don't hate watch anything.

I am going to be contrary to everyone here, but the second one is even worse. One shouldn't invest even their small amount of money into shitty things.
There is always piracy though, so maybe they do not buy a lot of tickets

There's always the case that someone watch something that they thought they'd like (maybe because of hype) and they end up hating it a lot, so they further their knowledge and hatred reading reddit posts and articles etc about that. You don't have to spend a lot of money to know details about something you hate (also, yes, piracy is a thing).
I don't like both people who judge without consuming the media they're critizising and people who spend a lot of time hating a media they continue to follow/consume, but I can understand and tollerate the latter way better. At least you can talk about the flaws of that media and understand why they hate it after a conversation. With people just judge prior consuming you don't get anything out of the conversation because they know nothing about it. Complete waste of time IMHO.

A lot of the time it isn't that the entire thing is shitty, though. It might've had a great concept or great characters or great storytelling up until the plot got totally sidetracked by the romance 2/3 of the way through. A lot of the time that makes it even worse because you can see the potential it had if it wasn't for some really bad writing/directorial decisions.
