Red Flags

(Anonymous) 2022-04-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your indicators that this new fandom/friend is not all that great?

Re: Red Flags

(Anonymous) 2022-04-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
They have strong opinions on Captain Marvel, and the Depp/Heard trial. Big red flags all around.

They think that it is wrong to like fictional things that would be wrong in real life and/or judge people for liking villains/other things that would be bad if real.

And for fandoms, if the fandom has the general feel of not being welcoming towards people with different tastes and is just generally a judgy place.

Also fandoms that seem to do a lot of mixing up fact and opinion and has difficulty when a fan has an opinion that differs from what the majority thinks.

Any fandom where hate is sent to the RL actors/writers/creators just because fans don't like something. And fandoms that think that because they are the fandom, that gives them rights to tell creators what to do and that creators somehow owe them. Entitled fandoms are the worst.

Putting absolutely anyone (characters, actors, showrunners, writers, fellow fans) on pedestals. The higher the pedestal, the smaller the infraction that will make them fall off, and the more vicious the meltdown.

Overuse of tags for fics. If too many people are tagging for too many things, much of which is completely mundane in nature and has no need to be tagged for, the fandom demographic likely skews very very young and is not a fandom I wish to be a part of.

It is an anime

Literally any fandom for a new franchise that has come out in the past five or so years.

Re: Red Flags

Fandom: if it skews a lot younger. Just not something I want to be messing around with.

Friend: if they're waaay too affectionate and intense right off the bat. We barely know each other, I'm not cool with all the hearts yet!

Fandom: If it attracts the kind of fans you don't like; too old, too young, too male, too female, to dark, too fluffy. A fandom might be great but not great for you. And if it isn't for you probably can't change it all by yourself. A real, actual red flag is if the fandom gets non-fandom attention. Rick and Morty might be fun but you don't want to get tarred and feathered with that McDonald's Szechaun Sauce brush.

Friends: If they have a million stories about all the assholes they've met and no stories about good folks. If they gossip about other people behind their backs. If they belittle your interests. If they share a ton and force intimacy early on. You know, the typical relationship warning signs.

I've been extremely lucky with my fandoms; even the largest one I'm in, which has apparently got some pretty toxic neighborhoods, also has quiet side-street with lovely neighbors, and I stick to those streets. I'd stay away from fandoms where I'm told by people I trust that members just hate-watch or hate-read, or fandoms where, yeah, they go after actors for daring to not be exactly as they are in your RPF, or after showrunners because "they've made it too woke OMGZ!"
Come to think of it, the latter happens in a couple of my fandoms - but again, I just steer off the main drags and go to the side streets.

When the fandom makes its shipping all about representation or diversity, in any or multiple ways. If they say their ship should have been canon because it would have been good representation, that it wasn't canon because the writers were homophobic, that they queerbaited by having the characters be friends and say nice things to each other. LGBTQ representation isn't all there is either. If fans of a het ship act like their ship is the most progressive ship that could happen in canon because at least one character isn't white (this happens most frequently with white man/WOC) and the only reason anyone would not ship it is racism.

Maybe I'm projecting a bit here because I just watched Arcane and then went looking at the fandom, but by god it isn't the first one to do all this.

Still thinks of Arnold/Helga as cute (but understands it's gross/wrong to tell a little girl that a boy is mean to her because he likes her).

Fandom: "We're so nice and welcoming and everyone always gets along!" This fandom is a Cult of Nice shithole where dissenting opinions are immediately suppressed.

Personal: Everything that has gone wrong in their lives is because someone else was out to get them. If they are always the victim, there's going to always be a villain and sooner or later, that villain is going to be you.

I recently did a Kim Possible rewatch, and I have all sorts of shippy feelings. But I highly doubt there is much of an active fandom. And I'm scared to wade into AO3 without having some idea of what are general trends in the fandom, who are good authors, and whatnot.

Tales of the Abyss. Man, no one told me what an amazing game this is. I'm in love with every single character, which is so, so rare for me.

Near as I can tell, there's still a tiny bit of a fandom still kicking around, but it's mostly ships I'm not into, haha. Then again it doesn't seem like I'm finding very much at all for the ships I like in general, so maybe that's okay...

What character or story from world mythology do you most relate to on a personal level?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-29 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
A broad topic admittedly with countless possible answers.

Tagging etiquette

(Anonymous) 2022-04-29 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I usually tag for the main elements in a story and then put a more detailed series of warnings in the author's notes. Is this bad etiquette?
