Test run in progress. So what do you think about that commenting system?

[Poll #1378072]

I wonder idly whether the split in opinion on this is a split in the way people participate in F!S. I'm in it for the conversations on particular secrets, and tended never to make 'starter' posts with my responses to a bunch of secrets together. So this makes things much much much much much easier for me, because of the kind of F!S reader I am.

I like it, though I know it's a lot of work. Maybe, so it would be less work, you could do something where other people would take turns doing the comments threads? I'd be willing to help :)

THANK YOU!!11

Thank you soooo much! I would like to see a whole week of this before polling again, but it's awesome that you've listened to comments and suggestions and are trying something new! Even if this doesn't work out, at least it was tried, and I'm grateful for that and this kickass community!

[identity profile] raven-scarlett.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cool, but isn't it a pain in the ass for you?

[identity profile] wayya.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm voting no, because I like seeing multi-reply comments... sometimes they make me realize there is a secret I dismissed too quickly whereas I'm actually interested in it. And I think that it's funnier to browse 10 pages of short threads than 3 pages of long threads.

In any case, technophile, you're an awesome moderator.

THANK YOU! Same here!

N. I kind of hate not being able to see where the new threads are.

[identity profile] madmancunian.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I really love it but loads of people don't seem to be following it which is dumb and lazy. Would there be a way of enforcing it?

(Anonymous) 2009-04-05 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Screen the comments. That way people will either get the idea that their way isn't working and post where they are supposed to. Or they will leave. Problem solved.

Though I do think general comments like 'Wow, there are a lot of x secrets today' or 'There are't many interesting secrets' should be allowed, as long as they don't talk about any secret specifically.

[identity profile] fickletastictot.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
N. Sick and WRONG and sometimes I just don't give a shit about people's comments.

WTF is so wrong about CTRL + F anyway? Give a mod a break.

(Anonymous) 2009-04-05 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What does this system matter to you then anyway. Just post your comment to technophile's relevent comment and them move on. No one is forcing you to read other peoples comments.

As some on else explained. the Find function is a pain when you are looking for multiple secrets, and updates to those secrets.

Think about it. On some days, I want to read the comments to around ten secrets.

That is ten different finds for each page. FS regularly reaches 10+ pages. That is over a hundred times I have to do this, and that isn't even taking into account doing it all over again the next day, because my time difference means there are a lot of new comments to already existing threads while I sleep. So we are likely looking at doing it over 200 times per post, maybe more if it's a busy post. Seriously. This is just so much easier.

You know what, I just thought.

HOW LONG has F!s been going? Long enough, I bet.

Why change it now? It doesn't NEED changing, bro.

(Anonymous) 2009-04-05 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's bigger and busier now than it used to be.

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of neutral.

Either way, I'm still having to click onto different pages and scan down the list to see which secrets/comments I want to reply to so it hasn't really made my life any easier or indeed more difficult.

[identity profile] hifive24.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it, but seriously if it's too much work don't bother... it's already an awesome community you put way too much work into (that I am totally thankful for, btw :D)

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The only way I could see this continue to be valid is maybe if there was someone dedicated to monitoring comments and indexing - and nothing else. Honestly, I understand wanting the ease of hunting down comments, but that's what Add to Memories and Ctrl+F are for. They work for me, at least.

[identity profile] lalachoy.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, it takes a lot of fun out of F!S to me. I liked to go searching and not to mention, sometimes I would somehow miss reading a secret or would misread it, to go through comments and see this secret was actually interesting (or wanky.). If the first visible comment for the secret is something like "lol" or "in b4 wank" then yeah. :/ This new way just annoys me and I don't think I'll want to go checking out the secrets anymore. Which isn't too big in the grand scheme of things if most people really like it.

[identity profile] lunarkitten.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but I don't like it. Like others, I like commenting to a bunch of secrets in one comment and then reading through everyone else's responses while I search for relevant comments. Plus I'd rather go through all the pages than open up each humongous thread seperately.

(Anonymous) 2009-04-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Definite YES. Much easier to find comments on specific secrets. Thanks for your time.

[identity profile] kirstian.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not that much of a fan, but as a reader and not a poster I don't know if I really have any right to comment. However I will say that I read the FS comments specifically for those few hilariously witty response comments, and with all the threading it's impossible to see those at all. But by god, is it organized prettily! :D

[identity profile] biocaam.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVES IT.
Sucks that it makes more work for you, though. D:

[identity profile] eibborn.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Either you are the fastest coder ever, you will never again go outside, or [livejournal.com profile] technophile really is a committee.

[identity profile] melengro.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I...find that the old system, while admittedly a bit chaotic, felt like a more naturally-flowing way to do it, really. Plus it allowed us to address multiple secrets in one comment, which I liked.

[identity profile] morejellytoast.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like it. Too much work for you, and I love getting everything I wanted to say out in one comment.

[identity profile] morejellytoast.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Also, one of my favorite things about reading this comm is seeing everyone's cool icons. You can't do that if they're all nestled in a thread!

I like it. I love it. I want some more of it.

[identity profile] miribai.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
This is a bad idea. Not only is it an exorbitant amount of work for you, but I have to stop every time I see a posting worthy secret, find the thread and post, I couldn't just post as I go like I use to.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU!!! I'm so frustrated by that as well. :(

I really hope it changes back. Sadly, I'm not so sure that's likely, since 59/4% of the community seems to have a thought process I can not understand. :/

[identity profile] mahkia.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I say try a few more times to better gauge general consensus, but...like most people have said, if it's more work for you, we're fine the way things are. :) This comm is quite the labor of love, I'd imagine, and you owe us nothing. XD

[identity profile] ptolemaeus.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's way, way cool, and makes it much easier to participate in the way that is natural for me. On the other hand... lots of people don't like it/I probably won't participate much anyway/it's a lot of work for you and we're just gonna be ungrateful anywaaaay ;D So I'd say we try it out for another week, and if it's too much trouble for you, or the haters hate very loudly, it can go back like it used to be and that'll be good enough :D

And by the bye, you're an awesome mod. -thumbs up-

I like it, but it would be more awesome if you linked to the thread under the secret.

[identity profile] yuliee.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, agreed. That might make it easier.. LJ is real temperamental with it's linking in entries, though, so that could be even harder work than making individual comment threads.
