Test run in progress. So what do you think about that commenting system?

Yeah, it's kind of a pain in the ass to have to comment to each thread individually. CTRL+F never hurt anyone. Plus, lol, am I the only one that enjoys finding wank for other secrets when I'm looking for replies? ahhhh yeah askfgsakj /INDECISIVE

Please get rid of this. For the love of God.

I also would like to register that mine is a strong "no". I always enjoyed reading people's comments about secrets that I didn't necessarily want to comment on, and I feel like this way is going to reduce participation a lot from people who read the comments like that. Really don't like this system.

Honestly, I don't like this all that much. It's too... well, sterile. Boring. Irritating. Personally, I've always loved going through all the pages of comments. Maybe it's part of the F!S experience? I dunno. But it was more fun the old way. Even though I don't usually care about more than, at maximum, five secrets, I liked reading all the responses anyway. With today's entry, I only read the responses to one secret. It would be too much trouble to do the equivalent of my usual casual browsing- I really don't want to have to sit and click a million times to read everything. This way, I have to wait for the first thread to come up, then the next one, then the next one, and on down the line 'til you've got to the end. Then on to the next secret, and I'd have to do this over and over and over and over again. It'd be easier to just give up on commenting altogether. :

I HAVE THOUGHTS

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
1.) If people are still just going to make individual comment threads about secrets outside of the designated threads, what's the point of the new comment system, and

2.) If each designated comment thread is going to have a link to the secret in it, what's the point of displaying the secrets in the post itself?

THE NEW COMMENT SYSTEM IS ILLOGICAL, CAPTAIN.

Re: I HAVE THOUGHTS

Just guessing here but
1) I'm guessing people who comment outside the designated threads are too lazy to read, follow instructions, or maybe it's like a type of protest. Rather than throwing a fit though, and deleting all those comments, I'm thinking it's a live and let live situation.

Also, people who want a more focused and easily findable discussion have the means to do so with the new system. People who just want to comment all at once can just do what they want afterwards and both can be happy.

Seeing as how the majority are voting yes to the new system, no harm is really done with outside thread commenting because there are enough people interested in the new format to support threaded secrets regardless. The only people really missing out, if anything, are the people who are posting their comments outside the threads because now people might have less of an inclination to sort through that stuff when they know where to find what they're interested in. But hey, since some people like that kind of style, they can have it their way too, no?

2. It's good for a reference instead of scrolling all the way back to the top when I want to find out why a particular thread has so many comments or so few. I can just copy/paste the link in a new tab.

Also, the lag that it causes is driving me banana sandwich.

I wrote comments for five secrets, ended up commenting on only one because it was too bothersome to find each corresponding thread and post my comment, especially as said comments were along the lines of "no, I also think the design is cool" and "I thought it was legit."

This system may be useful for those who post their secrets and are only interested in the replies, but for someone like me who just reads and comments... it's not working at all. :/

So, out of curiosity, how long is this poll open for? :/

Screw the poll, don't do it if you don't want to. Don't quadruple your workload...

Just a couple of notes:

1. I've noticed that the new way of posting secrets has actually received more comments. I think it's safe to ignore those who say "well, I'm not going to comment anymore." LOL

2. I guess I didn't understand your initial explanation of the new posting system. I thought you were going to post the secret (in image format, not just link) in it's own comment thread. Which means you wouldn't be posting any pictures in the post itself. That makes a lot more sense to me. It's easier to post on the secret's comment thread if the secret is just right there, you know? I wasn't going to say anything because it seems like that's a lot of work for you but the second time you tried this new system, you actually posted the link of the secret, so. Any interest in going one step further?

(Anonymous) 2009-04-07 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
1. What do you mean there are more comments? As in comments to the daily post overall?

I think the reason posts are now receiving more comments is because instead of single comments addressing multiple secrets, there is a comment for each secret instead. For example, what would have originally been one post about three secrets would, under the new system, be three separate posts which would increase the overall post count.

Although, I think the quality of comments and discussions are better now. Instead of ten separate "IAWTC"s, we have "IAWTC too because..." And instead of having five different comments asking "where can I find that fanart/who is this guy?" you can cut it down to one and find the answer easier/faster too.

2. I think that would make loading that much longer and the scrolling would take forever too. There are enough complaints about that with the changes already made. It would either be like:
a) having the secret posting happen twice
b) And if you had only the threads and images (and not the initial list posting of secrets), it would take long to get from one secret to the next

Right now, just having the link doesn't take that long of a loading time, and it's there if you forget and want to check it out. You can just open it in a new window or tab.

1. omg You're right. Would you believe me if I said I was a little drunk when I posted that comment? No? Okay. lol I don't know what I was thinking. (I may actually be a little drunk now...)

2. If the secrets are posted in image form in the comments instead of being posted in the post... how does that make the post load slower? It's the same number of images being loaded.

Scrolling wouldn't take longer because it's the same amount of take that you'd already be scrolling in this system. Besides, even if it does take a couple more seconds longer, that "disadvantage" is outweighed by the convenience of remembering what post you wanted to comment on. For example, in the old style or even in this new style of posting, I always type out the numbers of the secrets I want to comment on in the URL or search bar in my browser. Then, when I'm done reading through the comments, I have to find each comment's thread via the number and then ctrl-F to find out what the secret was to comment on it again (because I usually end up commenting half a dozen). If the comment thread contained the image, you could just open open up the thread (not the whole post, for example, this (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/262161.html?thread=124162577#t124162577) link, not this (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/262161.html) link in a new thread for each secret you wanted to comment on. Honestly, I don't see how this is worse than what we have now. It's much better, imo.

"If the secrets are posted in image form in the comments instead of being posted in the post... how does that make the post load slower? It's the same number of images being loaded."

I meant that it would take longer to load for the first scenario I posted, where the images would be posted twice (one in the overall post and again in the threads). I just mentioned this way of doing things just to cover all bases.

In the second scenario I posted (the one you're advocating), it would take longer to scroll from one secret image to the next. I know some people don't care that much about the comments, they just want to see the overall secret post and leave (Crazy, but true!). Those people would have to scroll through the secret image and the accompanying thread comments before getting to the next secret, and that might even be on the next page. Well, that is if I'm understanding you right. You may be a little drunk, but I'm totally crazy sleep deprived, so if I don't make sense, sorry!

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Now both formats are being used...it would be easy to say that it means "everyone wins", but it also is a bit awkward to read.

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Plus many of us still have to deal with the loading lags.

Honestly, if it weren't for that, I'd have an easier time getting over this. But the increased lag is seriously driving me crazy. I don't feel like I've 'won' at all.

Which part is lagging, of of nosiness?

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Clicking on a new secret post, depending on the number of comments, it's a full thirty seconds (I counted) before I can move anywhere in the page. It's like that for about the first three pages of comments--where all the individual secret comment threads are. The secret images themselves load fine, very quickly, within a few seconds, but it's loading the comments, even collapsed, that's killing me. And every time I leave a comment, I go through the whole thing again, because even if I make the reply in a new tab, I have to wait through the lag before I can close that tab.
