"Ryan Reynolds isn't actually hot" is certainly a provocative and controversial opinion

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Is it though? I'm with OP. He looks regular AF. I like I would not turn back to glance at this 9 to 5 looking MF.

He's not ugly. He's just...plain. to me, anyway.

And I think I also see where OP is coming from in the lack of erotic tension -- he's a cool yet relatable guy (is the vibe). If he were overly "masculine" or "feminine" it might say more about the guy who'd "turn gay for him". Like they might feel some kind of way if they found a very muscular man or a very...delicate featured pretty boy the one they'd turn for. Idk. I'm not a man. But I say this as a lady who's very into either Tarzan type of dudes, or androgynous pretty men. So maybe I'm just projecting in a way lol.

I don't know what's more confusing about this secret

1) someone taking other people saying "the one person I'd go gay/straight for" as literal factual truth

2) someone doing 1) and not realizing conventional attractiveness probably doesn't matter all that much when you're not physically attracted to that group in the first place

I meant it as the literal factual truth when I said it about Bridget Regan. Then again, I figured out a few years later I was bi and would actually happily sleep with a lot of women. So not sure if a truly straight person would also mean it literally.

This. Like it's actually a little bit concerning how many people seem to be missing these (from what I can see) very obvious points.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, why is he supposed to be a "safe choice"? Do you mean that there's "no danger of actual erotic tension" because they're not actually attracted to him? And there are other male celebrities (presumably more attractive, by your reckoning) that straight dudes might feel some true secret desire for, but they're just not talking about?

Or am I totally off-base in trying to interpret this secret?

David Bowie, surely?

To say something controversial: homosocialism is live and well in the West, even if very different from and far subtler than it's greek and roman roots, and I personally think that when people are being genuine and not ironic when they say this, they mean they could have a relationship with Ryan Renoylds which crosses past current social limits of platonic bonds, and they mean it. In order words, erotic tension is not really the point, emotional resonance is.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because you don't think he's hot doesn't make it fact. A lot of people think he's hot (myself included).

Also, I don't see how he's any safer of a choice than any other random actor.

Yeah. And it isn't even a case where Ryan Reynolds aligns with heterosexual male consensus of what a sexually attractive heterosexual male is supposed to look like, because in that case it would be like, Chris Hemsworth.

i think the "one guy you'd go gay for" is a stupid idea anyway

i don't find him attractive - because I'M NOT GAY. you might as well ask "if you believed in a god which god would you believe in", when the answer is none of them, because i don't - i don't have the capacity to view the world through that lens; and i don't have the capacity to find ryan reynolds attractive, because i'm not attracted to guys

can i recognise that he has a number of features that are attractive to people who are attracted to those features? yes. am i attracted to them? no

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
that example is funny to me because i don't think it would be a particularly hard thing to answer & also an interesting thought exercise. what gods reflect on your values or aspirations, what beliefs might prey on your particular insecurities?

also you can find someone of the opposite sex attractive without being gay, it's not the end of the world you don't have to hand your straight card in immediately lol

...wait what??

The same way an atheist might use the phrase "jesus christ" or "god damnit!" isn't because they've changed their viewpoint, people saying they'd be "gay for this or that person" has very little to do with their sexuality as a whole.

The only way I've seen it used is as a complement, that they idolize or just really personally like them- enough that they'd figuratively 'go gay' for them. Attractiveness is really just a kinda plus, since everyone's that little bit shallow, and everyone with eyes are going to have an opinion/preference regardless of gender. Sexuality has little to nothing to actually do with it.

(I phrased this better but then it got eaten by my shitty internet so yeah)

Okay, for the 65,438,219,374th time, attractiveness is subjective.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
But, also, I have to say, it's probably not just physical attractiveness. He seems like he'd be fun to be around, to me, and I'm guessing to others as well.

This! Ryan Reynolds has a great fun charm to him. I find him *way* more attractive in clips than in still pictures.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
He also seems like someone who would be great at good old-fashioned Gay Chicken, so I wouldn't bet on zero sexual tension.

Maybe they pick him because he seems funny and probably fun to pal around with, so even if gay sex stuff had to happen (aliens made them do it?) they figure he'd at least make them laugh and maybe offer them some gin after?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with going gay for a guy based upon his boyfriend/dad vibes more than for his looks?

When I was a teen girl in the late 90s/early 2000s I had a HUGE fangirl crush on Conan O'Brien because I found him to be extremely funny.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Who do you expect them to pick? Harvey Keitel?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more of a personality thing than a looks thing. He has a sense of humour and he seems like he'd be fun to hang out with, so it isn't so much there's no danger of erotic tension, it's that he seems like he'd defuse other kinds of tension/awkwardness, which is nice when you're imagining doing something completely new. And even if he were the best looking man to ever live, if you aren't really interested in sleeping with men there's not that much advantage in it. Better to pick someone you think you'd enjoy spending time with.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Couldn’t disagree more. I think he’s both scalding hot, and cute as hell. And I’m usually never attracted to men.

I think on paper he's not conventionally attractive, but I like him because he has a good sense of humor and plenty of charisma (I'm a lesbian).

I think they mean it more like a girl-crush sort of way...

Or like y'know the fact that physical attraction is a very small part of liking someone. (particularly of you aren't actually sexually attracted to said gender) It's more than likely that he's a good guy, funny, and the type a guy they /want/ to be, which is why they say he's the one they'd go /gay/ for rather than, idk, have random anonymous sex in a dark alley with. Just a thought.
