Yeah, I'm one of those people who couldn't finish because I really can't stand baby-voiced female lead characters. There's just something unsettling watching a character who is a grown woman (and who will later have a romantic relationship like she's a grown woman) pout and full on aaahhhhhhhggggghhhhaaaaaa wail like a toddler because of some trivial disappointment. This is a character type that's 100% acceptable in cdramas, but I really don't like it and tend to nope out of them pretty quickly.

But Zhang Linghe is cute. I liked him in Maiden Holmes!

He was really neat in Maiden Holmes!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I could absolutely hear that wail, A+ onomatopoeia!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand that type of female lead, but I don't mind it in this drama because the more ridiculous she is, the funnier the magical link is.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The magical link was funny, and I enjoyed the moments where the two characters switched bodies. If the whole series had been a comedy instead of a drama with comedic moments, I think I would've finished it without issues.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't overly enamoured by either of the leads honestly, Orchid's personality is nails-on-a-chalkboard cutesy and Dongfang for me was just kind of... dull and one-note? I liked it when they switched bodies because it gave both the actors the ability to do something different which I really liked, but after that stopped I got a bit bored with the show. I still finished it and liked it overall but the supporting cast kept me around more tbh as I found them more enjoyable to watch.

Best dog-friend Shang Que and Cheng Heng were my faves.

Zhang Linghe was certainly v. pretty.

As to the second half of your secret... I understand not liking a squeaky-voiced character. Everyone who likes this drama understands not liking a squeaky-voiced character.

It was the string of secrets expressing outrage that anyone could like this story - can't you hear her squeaky voice??? that had me giving people the side-eye.

Just chill, my guys.

SA

Which is to say. I think OP is not accurately describing reception of Fairy and Devil on this community.

Which sounds about accurate on fandomsecrets, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it seemed more like they were offended that people could enjoy or be a fan of the show.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't recall seeing any secrets where people expressed outrage that other people were enjoying the show. Gently, I think you might be one of the people OP is referring to who mistake personal preference for a personal attack.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Friend.

Saying: "Your criticism is valid but I still enjoy the thing," is not exactly sooooooo angry.

And that is what everybody who likes the show is saying.

With equal gentleness, I suggest you let this go.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
... I'm not the OP, friend.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I still think you need to let this one go.

Have a great day, okay?

I remember leaving a fairly benign comment about not really liking it once and getting an essay response about why it was good actually lol.

It must suck to see people not like the thing you like but secret maker isn’t wrong in feeling like fans of this pretty popular drama are overly defensive about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Just tired, buddy. Just very very tired.

It's like someone pointing at a cartoon from the 80s and explaining that the animation is shit. And you say, 'Yes I know the animation is shit, but there's still a lot of things I like about it.'

And they shake you by the shoulders and say, 'But you don't understand how bad the animation is! It's really shit!'

And you say, 'Find something you like then. Go to your happy place.'

And they scream at you, 'BUT THE ANIMATION IS VERY BAD REALLY'

And you get very tired.

Someone explaining why they like a thing is not actually out to get you, okay?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Did you actually read the comment you responded to? ayrt said they didn't care for it and got an essay in response about why the drama was in fact good. That's not the same thing at all.

And someone saying “eh, this isn’t for me” isn’t a personal attack and yet here is a another ott response. You ok buddy? People not liking your tv show has got you super tilted.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Considering you are doing the exact opposite of what you describe all over this thread yourself it's no wonder you have such a skewed perspective.

What really happens is:
Someone says: "Nah, can't watch this because of the squeaky voiced annoying female lead"
And then stans of the show jump on them and shake them by the shoulders and yell:" NO but you don't understand, it's really good, actually!!!"
And the other person goes: "That's nice but the female lead annoys me too much so that spoils it for me and I cant watch it."
And the stand go: "But it's really great, you shouldn't let the thing that annoys you stop you from watching it!!"
"Nah, I'm good, you go enjoy your show and I'll find something else."
"WHY ARE YOU HATING ON MY FAVOURITE SHOW YOU'RE SO MEAN!"

You keep seeing the personal preference by others as a personal attack because you like it.

That's been my experience, too, but it seems like some people are really resistant to hearing anything negative about this cdrama, no matter how mild. I didn't hate it or think it was garbage. It just wasn't my cup of tea, so I stopped watching. (And yeah, saying that was enough for people to bend my ear about how I was wrong to not like the female lead and here's why...)

People get enthusiastic about the things they like. I get it. But sometimes their perspective gets a little skewed as a result, and like the secret said, someone who doesn't love what you love can feel like a personal attack when it's really not.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that anyone who likes this c-drama can't listen to criticism.

It's that the criticism is painfully obvious, and they agree with it already. Sometimes people like flawed things - it's amazing really.

And somehow, "I like it but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea" is getting transformed by OP's secret into, "Nobody can dislike my thing, ever."

Weirdly, nobody likes being lied about.

The scenery/costume/cast was so gorgeous I wanted to like this drama but yeah, the leading lady was not my cup of tea. Even the 20-second preview clip on Netflix was like nails on a chalkboard for me.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I loved the show, but, her voice did take getting used to. (I think they made it so extreme so her other voices would pop more? It was kinda the same in Love and Redemption.) Still, I would have liked a milder voice.

I think they made it so extreme so her other voices would pop more?

That's the only reason why I could stomach her voice. I can accept anything annoying/seemingly illogical as long as it makes sense for the plot or the fictional universe the story is set in. I've got a high tolerance threshold for squeaky-voiced female leads but hers was way too exaggerated.
