Same here. Even knowing her views I'm still very physically attracted to her, which sucks! She's a terrible person and deeply stupid on top of that! I try to replace the feeling by looking at Lucy Lawless more.

lol same here and I'm going to give the Lawless strategy a try

Looking at Lucy Lawless more just seems like an excellent life strategy, period!

Always look at Lucy Lawless more.

In the United States, people should not be fired because of politics/political views.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-30 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, if they work for the government! Luckily, Star Wars isn't a government property yet.

Unless you're talking about the Reagan-Era weapons program. In which case, you're correct and firing a civilian who worked on the Star Wars defense program for their political views would be a clear violation of their Constitutional rights.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-30 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm talking about getting fired for being liberal, conservative, et cetera.

Gina Carano's political views have nothing to do with The Mandalorian or Star Wars. It isn't fair that she got fired.

DA

People don't have a legal, constitutional right that protects them from being fired for their political views - the First Amendment only protects people from government action. But firing people for their political views is still bad. It's a hindrance to free speech if employers have the right to veto their employee's speech or demand that they have certain political views, even if it's not the government doing it. So I get why people would be leery about it.

But I think we should also take a less absolutist stance with regard to this kind of social pressure than we should for government restrictions on speech. When it comes to the first amendment, we have really cut-and-dry prohibitions on the government doing anything to restrict speech, regardless of who's talking or what they're saying. And that makes sense when we're talking about the government because the government is so powerful.

But when it comes to social pressure and the actions of private individuals, we have to be more nuanced. After all, people do have a right to decide not to associate with other people; companies have a right not to hire people who have a very bad public image for prominent positions. You can't really regulate that out of existence. And there are some points of view that *should* be socially unpopular, because they're evil, and bad. Being an open Nazi (as the worst possible hypothetical example) *should* have severe social consequences. So it's a case-by-case thing. You have to think about the details of what happened, who it was, what they said, how they were affected by it, etc.

You can if your politics/political views impact your job. An actor's job is not only to act in whatever tv show/movie they're cast in, but also to maintain a specific image to the public. Most studios have the bare minimum requirement of being inoffensive, which she did not meet.

1) i'm assuming you mean "if it's not related to the job" since being fired because of politics is a function of government administrative churn, 2) if your views mean people are going to put pressure on your employer, because those views about about say, human dignity or rights, and your employer doesn't want to be associated with someone denying human dignity or rights, and more importantly to the US, there's a business cost associated with being associated with denying human dignity or rights, then it's now related to your job.

You should be if you're a dick to your workmates though, which she was. She trolled Pedro Pascal whose sister is trans.

I don't see what that statement has to do with what happened, because she was NOT fired for political views. She was fired for spewing hate against a group of people. Hating people is not the same as politics.

If you genuinely think that hating other human beings for who they are, innately, is political, I don't know how to tell you any different.

Carano's "politics" made her an ACTIVELY HOSTILE person to work with, because her "politics" involved stating that she viewed Pedro Pascal's sister as less than human, as less than deserving of basic rights, and that's a DAMN good reason to get kicked off a TV set. If you come even indirectly for the family of the person with top billing, they get to say they cannot work with you. That he tried for as long as he did to de-hostile the workplace as she became increasingly hostile is more than many would have given her, when the show did not revolve around her character and could be written without her.

Yeah, it’s a shame she sucks so hard )= I don’t fault them for getting rid of her because it wasn’t just one thing as her stans make out, but I do wish she’d just kept her thoughts and opinions to herself. I wish pretty much all entertainers would do that, tbh. I’m sick of everything being political and I’m sick of so many thinking they’re standing on a hill they have to die on.
I guess it doesn’t much matter at this point. The last writer’s strike killed off half the scripted shows and made reality tv king. This new strike will finish the job and even afterwards we won’t have much to watch and it won’t be worth it. It barely is now.

Carano wasn't fired for her political opinions, she was fired because she kept posting her political opinions on Twitter and stirring up shit. Unfortunately, Gina simply could not figure out that it was maybe time to stop posting about politics on Twitter if she wanted to keep her job. I can't really blame Disney for deciding that her role as Cara Dune wasn't making them enough money to make dealing with the PR headaches and negative publicity she kept bringing down on them worth it.

Adding to this, doesn't Pascal have a trans sister? I could imagine Carrano's tweets causing friction on set and it's not like Disney would choose her and her questionable opinions over their star.

And I believe she was warned before she was canned. And she didn't stop, so...bye.

And that's so unbelievable because she was lined up to have her own spin off. But I guess those sweet burns were worth it.

She wasn’t fired at all. She’s been warned when she wa sunder contract from them and she kept things chill as a result. But a while after her contract ended she started posting polarizing content again mixed between promotional material for The Mandalorian. People were very upset to see Trump supporters being compared to holocaust victims between Cara Dune, Mando, and Baby Yoda pics and trailers for the show and Disney decided not only to not draw up another contract for her but also to let the whole world know she hadn’t been working for them for a while and never would again.

Yes please! A greater variety of body types! Especially large + strong women. I'm talking shoulders, I'm talking rib cages, I'm talking strength and con builds.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-30 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'm tired of hollywood trying to make us believe that only thin waifs are strong enough to throw furniture around. No, she needs to have muscles and BULK.

I mean, Pedro Pascal did try and talk to her and explain to her why what she was saying was offensive. Given that he has a trans sister who he's very close to, it sounds like he was a lot more willing to reach out to Carano than I probably would have been. It seems like she just wasn't willing to listen to him or to stop saying things that were upsetting her costars.

I agree, her character was a good part of the ensemble, but the actor just wasn't working well with the rest of the cast even before it started spilling out onto Twitter.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-30 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
All of this ^^

(Anonymous) 2023-04-30 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
YEAH. Like, he should absolutely not have been forced to work with her any longer.

I never really got into her character, though, so I didn't feel the loss hard-- I'm gay, so maybe it's just that Hot Buff Lady doesn't appeal to me, but I do like the Armorer and Bo Katan, so like... maybe it's just that the actress' vibe was so rancid I couldn't connect to her character? Or maybe I'm all for badass ladies but not affected by seeing arms and it's just that simple.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-04 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
i've been praying on her downfall for years. kind of wish it were just run of the mill people realizing she can't act to save her fucking life and not her extremely gross views on things, but i'll still take it.
