I still think the better way to end the movie would have been to play it straight and have it end with averting the apocalypse/having the sacrifices die.

Don't sweat it. I'm fully Asian and we didn't really make or eat fried rice at home OR at a restaurant. My parents felt it was unhealthy, and anyway the entree was flavorful enough to eat with regular steamed rice. Fried rice only showed up in fancy banquet dinners as the last course, per tradition, and you weren't really supposed to stuff your face with it because that suggested that all the (better, more expensive/elaborate) dishes that came before it weren't enough and your host might be insulted.

I feel as though Get Out does give an indication what it's about? To me, it's a very evocative title. I'm with you in the other two titles, though. They tell me nothing and could be titles for movies of any other genre.

An antihero (sometimes spelled as anti-hero)[1] or antiheroine is a main character in a story who may lack conventional heroic qualities and attributes, such as idealism, courage, and morality.[1][2][3][4][5] Although antiheroes may sometimes perform actions that most of the audience considers morally correct, their reasons for doing so may not align with the audience's morality.[6] An antihero typically exhibits one of the "Dark Triad" personality traits, which include narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism.[7]

I think both (definitions in the secret) are interesting, though they're not always done in such a way that *plays* interesting.

You mean the title suggests that the movie contains a scary situation and you should get out? Unlike every other horror movie? I'm not sure that's a helpful descriptor.

I think the initial positive reaction to this movie owes part of the popularity to Joss Whedon's magic and the fact that the ideas are somewhat clever, though not as clever as Whedon himself believes or his fans seem to think.

It's fine to not like Jordan Peele's movies, for sure, they can be real fucking weird and that's not everyone's jam, but to not like them because they're too message-y is a little sus.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are these fans making these comments?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this. I made one secret a few weeks back after thinking about it for months and I was so happy when I finally just did it. It wasn't hard and it was fun! But now I still can't find the drive to make the other secrets I've been thinking about as well...

Good for you OP. The hardest thing is to get started on creating anything sometimes, and even if its for this bit of the internet - its still something rather than nothing at all.

Is anyone else getting Jon Stewart vibes from this pic?

What Are Your Fanfiction Writing 'tragedies'?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Posted a fic with significant typos that you didn't notice til much much later? Misremembered something from the main source and wrote it into your story? Got started on a WIP that you had planned out and everything - only to change your mind half way?
Posted the wrong file to a fandom challenge/festival at the last minute?

Whatever it is, feel free to share!

It’s just a shitty movie that makes people feel savvy for understanding even though you barely have to know a couple slasher movie tropes to “get it,” and beyond the spoon-feeding of shallow meta it has no substance besides one or two good laughs. I’ve heard it described as the Ready Player One of horror, and from what I’ve heard about RPO that sounds about right.

Ayrt

It's more specific to me than that. It gives me a feeling of claustrophobia and urgency in the sense of time running out. I wouldn't expect a slasher film from this title, for example, or a supernatural horror story.

Yeah I mean, conventional doesn't mean bad. Conventional can still be a fun and thought provoking movie.

I enjoyed it the first time but I think it loses a lot on rewatches.

My 2007 unfinished Naruto highschool AU fic that still lives on FFnet and had been left on a cliffhanger.

I still have the next two chapters saved on my USB stick, but A) the last fic ends on a cliffhanger, B) I don't want to write more knowing that my badly written fic started off as a goofy love story and then got really serious near the end where I had left it off, and C) I STILL GET EMAIL NOTIFYING ME OF NEW COMMENTS TO THIS DAY, WHY??

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Why so?

I once called an OC by a canon character's name and didn't notice it for a good year. The OC was definitely related to the canon character but that was supposed to be part of the twist, lol. Oh well.

Running out of steam on a 100K+ WIP sounds familiar too. Goddamnit.

Another time, I wrote a backstory for a canon character, only for the creators to release the true backstory shortly afterward... oops.

I missed all the signs of a canon couple while writing my OTP at the time, and had to revise some stuff after someone clued me in... because I'm a ninny who tends to run canon-compliant. The fic turned out crappy, but I still like the idea of the pairing itself.

What I mean is, I wouldn't expect a slasher movie where the bad guy chases the victims around the town, for example. The feeling of claustrophobia means I would expect that most of the movie takes place in one specific and constrained location.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That simply is not usually treated as the function of a title.

sa

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Also forgot to mention I wrote 33 chapters of another OTP then dropped it. I was one of those idiots who took fanfiction way too seriously and wanted to write a fic "correcting" all the shitty mistakes I saw other writers making, only to end up with a fic that was a caricature of itself. Serves me right, I guess. (Oh well, at least I made some lemonade from that lemon and wrote a shorter pairing fic that had a few writing issues of its own, but it moved faster and made actual sense, and ended on a happy note.)

Re: Favorite mixed-genre media

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I'm usually a wuss with anything potentially too gorey or 'too real' (like a too-detailed serial killer movie) when it comes to horror, I prefer hybrid genres - especially when its horror mixed with comedy or something else.

Definitely have a big soft spot for musical horrors like: Anna and the Apocalypse (a zombie highschool musical), Sweeney Todd (although I still like the movie - when Angela Lansbury passed away I got hooked on listening to her version of Mrs Lovett), The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Little Shop of Horrors (both good campy and humorous).

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this way about a lot of Joss Whedon works.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Would having the victims all die be conventional though? Those are the stand ins for the main characters after all, and conventionally, at least one of the main characters survives in horror movies anyway. And then I having the virgin arch type survive is just more boilerplate. They even point that out in the movie.

Yeah, triggering the apocalypse was nice and all, but if the movie wanted to go the subversion route they should have killed the virgin on accident when trying to kill the "slut" and have her survive (and that lead to the apocalypse because the death of the "slut" isn't optional). Something like that. I feel like the way the movie did it was basically the most conventional route there was in a movie trying to be meta about conventions in horror movies.
