Re: You know what dumb thing bothers me about age reg fic?

Ayrt

You have managed to put into words what I have been looking for. I read a lot of age play and age regression and it never quite hits the mark for me but I can never quite pinpoint why and I think you hit it right.

I'd LOVE to see more of those fics that don't fundamentally change a character's personality. Like... ABSOLUTELY I see the appeal of 'this badass character is fundamentally submissive and requires a trusted Dom to keep on an even keel' IF they remain the badass I know from canon? I'd LOVE to see that where the author doesn't just decide Dom means 'the most masculine manly man ever' and sub means 'soft and weepy and the girl in the relationship'-- it's always with characters who don't actually fit those descriptors. Like... let a character who's canonically soft and anxious be that AND be a good Dom, let a character who's canonically buff and hairy and masc and willing to throw himself into physical danger be that AND be a sub who sometimes needs a good scene in order to go back out and be his best self.

And similarly with A/B/O, like... if I want to read about a canon badass, masc guy as an omega, I don't want him to suddenly be a wilting flower who wears panties (well, if it's Dean Winchester, he can wear panties, but only because he canonically likes them) and gets called 'princess'?? I want him to be himself, just... now he has a uterus. But it's ALWAYS like... even if a 'non-traditional-looking' omega starts out disguised as something else, the love interest finds out and suddenly the whole personality does a one eighty? Like... I promise you a man with a uterus can wear boxers or briefs and men's clothes, and like or even engage in sporty activities, and presumably in a world where monsters or supervillains exist, fight those just as easily as a man without one, and I can double promise you most of us don't like when other people look at a man's haircut, maybe facial hair, men's clothes, etc, any traditionally masc pursuits/interests... and then decide to use super-feminizing nicknames constantly. It's not cute, it's gross.

The Captain is Dead. Fast paced, easy to learn, all ages.

Spiritfarer is adorable, cozy and full of lovely characters but does pack a biiiig emotional punch and touches on some dark subjects. Keep tissues handy. But it's one of my favourite examples of when you can tell that a game has had tons of love and heart poured into it, it's very polished and thoughtfully made.

Subnautica gets another thumbs-up from me. It's definitely terrifying at times (I have a pretty bad fear of deep oceans in games) but you're eased into everything at a pretty good pace in terms of going to deeper depths/cave systems and you do feel better equipped and more confident as time goes on; you're never forced to go anywhere until you feel ready. It's got some really neat creature designs and worldbuilding and I didn't expect to get into the base-building as much as I did, but it's surprisingly deep and customizable.

I don't care about having 'success' with my stats or anything, but I am guilty for checking it frequently ever since I found out you can see how many people have secretly bookmarked a fic. It makes me happy to see it idk.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I check this tag out from time to time and the only way I can actually view any of it is through the tumblr app on my tablet; due to the option to turn off autoplay for videos and gifs that can be turned on by manually manually clicking (an option I wish was available for desktop because my shit laptop can handle scrolling far through a barrage of gifsets).
And you always get that asshole who's like 'Ah ha! I'm am surprise-hypnotizing you >:) succumb to my long as fuck post full of flashing spirals and the worst written dialogue ever to go with it' and just bruh, at least stop spamming the tags with the same thing over and over so I can find the good kink stuff fics/gifs/art in-between more easily.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
lol I'm currently in the middle of writing a classification fic (the fun niche trope of 'you are assigned little/caregiver/none-of-the-above by government or whatever system and will be assigned to each other AU).

I do understand why that's frustrating though; I've always thought that the mash-up tag of age-regression/de-aging was a terrible idea (especially back when I just wanted to read just de-aging 'x character has been turned into a literal child' fics, only having to wade through the adult baby stuff I didn't want to read).
I try to be more specific with my tagging so that it can be the kind of thing to be filtered out, but in the end everyone needs to do it too - and I strongly suspect its usually a case of wanting the story to be shown to as many people as possible within the bare minimum of tagging just agere/de-age.

I've been in lurk-mode since the start of the year, but I've really enjoyed the journal and planner community that's been consistently semi-active with a pretty lively community when it does update.

It’s the same no matter the bot. I don’t even look to see what they are, but even if it’s obviously porn I still feel a little “oh, attention for me!” I’m that desperate I guess.

Tumblr and attraction to men?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Every time I go on tumblr, I'm struck by how little I'm interested in men compared to other women.

I definitely am interested in them. I even married one. But my gods! Some days it seems my entire feed is thirst, and women forgiving men every little thing. A male character can commit the most heinous of crimes, and if he's even just slightly physically attractive, there will be long treatises excusing said crimes, and lambasting any characters (particularly female ones!) who dare to say, "your behavior is troublesome."

I come away feeling like I just can't relate to any of these people. Whether a male character is physically attractive has absolutely no bearing on how I feel about him, and I'm more likely to "side" with female characters. I find that I completely disagree with the common criticism that female characters are poorly written; in fact, in my experience, the best written ones are the ones most likely to be hated, because they push back against the male characters.

I'm not really sure where this is going. I think mainly I've been realizing that my attraction to men is super muted compared to other women, because the only way I can explain what I see is that, when they've got the hots for a dude, they go blind to his faults, and dislike anyone who dares to point them out.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I’m sorry you never found out how it ended, OP!

Re: Tumblr and attraction to men?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I've ever gone as far as writing paragraphs excusing the behavior of my hot villain fave, but I can attest the thirst is real, and it's especially real when there are no men IRL that I find myself attracted to or going out with, etc. I cannot speak for everyone, of course, but I'd I was more present online and active in fandom, I'd probably have a dedicated Tumblr or something to each of if my faves. I have enjoyed the pages and fic lists others have made on Tumblr, because nothing's more fun than enjoying the same hot fave with others who understand how badly you want that character. And so you read fic, you write fic, and you squee! Probably other things too!

Maybe everyone you're running into is that thirsty! Maybe your attraction is in fact muted. But what is even the "normal" level to begin with? Maybe we're all just extra on that fandom dick specifically because it doesn't exist irl, and will only exist as we imagine it to --as a writer and reader, we're having control over this character and how he treats the other half or your stand in. Who knows!

Re: Tumblr and attraction to men?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
You really do curate your own experience. Like, sure, I've seen people try to excuse crimes to make a (almost always male) character a poor little meowmeow, but it's just an indicator of who to block, so I'm more likely to get people on my dash who love a character, both male and female, BECAUSE of the crimes. Crimes for everyone!

Re: Tumblr and attraction to men?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Curating your experience is a thing.

As for myself I didn’t marry a man, am asexual and have always been impartial to men in ways most of my peers couldnt relate. Because of that, you described exactly how I felt in the days of pre-SNS fandom, when “BNF” crews dominated fansites, mailing communities, forums. A lot of thirsting everywhere. A LOT of it. And I feel like older women who have been in fandom since those days tend to be like that even now, but that’s just a feeling. And that’s nice I mean, pretty sure our grandmas couldn’t do that because “a proper wife in the 50s!!” or whatever, so power to girls (and gay men?) thirsting over men in fandom spaces. But being a millennial I had the freedom to think “whew, that’s too much” and feel the exact opposite.

The good part is we are now free to curate our fandom experiences in huge SNS and thats what I do!

Does being extra on fandom dick have to involve hating women though? It just seems so toxic and patriarchal.

Re: Tumblr and attraction to men?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've curated my experience so much that my dash is mostly full by people thirsting after women. And I am ace with aesthetic attraction mostly to men, so this is funny.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have read a few dom/sub world fics where the characterization stays on point and the worldbuilding is somewhat thought out but only on recs because otherwise there's waaaaaaaay too much shit to wade through. And I don't rely on the "non-traditional dynamics" tag because 99% of the time it IS the traditional dynamics, just there'll be a maybe a chapter of something else first.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I really hate how common it is on otherwise socially conscious blogs. Like, you have to be up-to-the-minute on LGBTQA+ and anti-racist terminology or you're harming people but saying "kys" is just fine? How does that make sense?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely value and appreciate kudos and comments. (I like knowing someone found worth in what I made, yeah?)

That said, what I make is usually so incredibly niche that my internal bar for "a good number of comments" is two.

since I just finished the game for the fifth time in my life, Vivi from FF9 remains stand out to me

Oh man I’m glad it’s not just me! I always thank people who leave a comment and I love to leave comments but it’s literally just fine if my stuff sits there.

I’m an old hag in fandom terms though :)

This is me! My fandom darlings are minor league.

Re: Exciting things!

(Anonymous) 2023-06-20 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Right??? I loved everything I saw in the trailer. And the characters and crew dynamics seem like something I can totally get behind.

That last scene where Luffy tells Zoro about how all great fighters call out their finishing moves - he looks so excited when he tells Zoro that and it just fits! East Blue Luffy IS an excited kid going on a grand adventure!

And then Zoro's pause and flat "no, they don't", lol. I love the goofier side of Zoro that was more prevalent in East Blue, but if they decide to play the crew a bit more straight to be better foils to Luffy I'm not mad.

And Buggy! And that gorgeous shot of Shellstown! And that moment between Nami and Zoro! And Sanji kicking probably-Fullbody for causing a fuss in the restaurant! (Really excited for non-pervert Sanji, actually. Probably still a simp, but at least not as much of a pervert).

And Mackenyu's sword fighting! I mean, the two sword action was already hot, but have you seen a still of the three sword style? How the heck did he make having a sword in his mouth look that good???

I love everything, I'm hype and I'm hoping we'll get another trailer with more Usopp and Sanji soon. Though it doesn't matter, I'll definitely watch every episode anyway. Like you said, it doesn't have to be good, it just has to be fun and feel like OP and it seems like they managed to do that.

What did you think of the trailer?

Thanks!

It just rained here after a few weeks of being too hit and dry, so that was really pleasant. It's nice you got your weeding done! Getting a job done, especially if you put it off for a while, feels so good. And yay for your clean garden!

Mysterium is a cross between Dixit and Clue. It's clue cards, like Dixit, are beautiful and if need be you can play with easier rules when the 11yo join. It's largely co-op.

Revolution is a bluffing game. You need to be at least 5 people to play though.

Betrayal at the House on the Hill is a nice, long horror game with certain RPG elements. It just requires three people, but it might be a bit much for the 11yos (in terms of game play, not because it's scary). It's completely co-op until at a random point in the game it's revealed that there's a traitor in the group (determined by a certain conditions determined in turn by what triggered the reveal, so you really don't know who it is until the reveal). Then it's a 1 vs. everyone else.

Before 2020 I would have recommended Pandemic, but since the real-life pandemic... Sensibilities vary, so know your audience, I guess. It's a co-op game where you battle against 4 diseases before they spread too far in the world.
