No more park benches, no loitering, no hobbies (unless you monetize them), NO REST. This is a place we can REST with no monetization. What's wrong with being liberal is that both the right and the left hate you and call you "lib" as a heinous insult. The difference is that the left doesn't realize a lot of people who call themselves liberals are in fact exactly as far left as themselves (I, in the US, have an elderly relative who supports local socialist politicians where he can find them and calls himself a liberal), they just didn't get the memo that "liberal" implies "basically centrist" in terminally online language. So we're back to the problem of using the correct lingo being more important than what you actually think and do.

Fandom was much more hostile to the alt rights' attempts at recruiting when it wasn't full of people browbeating others and justifying it with leftist rhetoric. Working harder at alienating everyone with more extreme versions of an unpopular dogma will not help.

And "you're either an activist or you've abandoned your ideals" sounds like the mindset of someone who needs to be less hard on themselves, as well as everyone else. I say that with no mockery, in absolute sincerity.

You're being ridiculous. This subthread started with someone saying that not being an activist in fandom is the same thing as being an oppressor. That is a stupid claim and should be derided as such. There is nothing wrong with calling out people in fandom for spreading alt right rhetoric. People should do that.

But the secret isn't about that. It's about seeing fandom as activism in the sense that everything you do in fandom must be proactively furthering an activist cause. "You want to write a fic about two white guys fucking because you need a break from life and like a ship with two white guys? Nope, sorry, that's not activist enough. Your fic must contain at least one woman or one POC, preferably both." That's the kind of "activism" this secret is about.

I'm disabled too, you prick. I never said fandom was "safe" from this. I said it's one of the few places where you aren't forced to expend any effort. You can REST. I want to REST. And honestly, it's starting to feel abilist to have people telling me I can't, I must always fight EVERYWHERE and AT ALL TIMES.

I'm guessing you haven't noticed but this kind of thing is PART of the alt right recruiting. If the thing you're doing/reading/watching isn't PURE enough, then you're a bad person. It's all so very christian. By saying that we all either have to say the right words, hold the right opinions, write the right fic, read the right fic, watch the right shows, ship the right pairings, or we're the oppressor? You're the one espousing alt right ideology.
