Petty grievances.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
A local restaurant owner/chef in my town has a great reputation for being a good person. She tries to help out her community and I know for a fact that puts her money where her mouth is. But... times are tough for small businesses and she's running her very small restaurant almost single-handedly in terms of cooking. She's also very active on social media, so she makes weekly posts about her website, where you can order food online for pick up. This is both hot food AND freezer meal type things For months, I'd see it and think, cool, I'll check it out!

And each time it's the same, she's got a bunch of tasty stuff listed, that's 80% out of stock. This has been the same way, unchanging, for more than half a year. But she keeps posting to FB, trying to get people to order stuff and I'm just... make more food? Or take the out of stock items off your menu? Because at some point it doesn't make sense to try and drive traffic to your website when there's very little you can actually buy.

But I don't say anything because this community comes down HARD on anything that isn't gushingly supportive sunshine and rainbows.

There's a local foodtruck owner/chef in my town that we call Flake. She makes the most amazing huli huli chicken and mac salad. We've tried every other Hawaiian place in town and seriously, she's the best. She complains all the time that she doesn't get enough custom. She also doesn't keep regular hours AT ALL. We always have to check if she's open by going to grubhub to see if she's open there for delivery before we even go to her truck, and THAT isn't even a guarantee that she's open. We would have stopped going a long time ago if her food wasn't so good.

Like, lady, if you want to make money at this maybe you should act like a business? Just a thought.

Why not post something supportive that asks the question at the same time, like "I'd love to order X or Y or Z but I see it's all out of stock, when do you think it will be available again?"

My petty grievance is about traffic.

I tried to get into Boston today to help my mother run an errand. What should have taken us two and a half hours ballooned into six.

I know that detours, asphalt repairs and sewer maintenance are necessary. I understand that parking anywhere in Boston is a near impossibility. I understand that bicycle couriers are invariably insane.

What I don't understand is why I should have encountered all of these things in one day.

:(

My petty grievance is that none of my favorite fanfics have updated since 1996 (okay, June) and I'm dying (not literally (except technically everyone is literally dying so actually yes literally)).

I hate when people are draining pasta in the sink. And they put the strainer in the sink. And then they just pour it all out at once so that the water backs up into the noodles. UGH. UGGGHHHHHHHH.

Weekend Plans?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2023-08-11 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing this weekend?

I am blissfully doing nothing. Will probably listen to Nosleep (their Suddenly Shocking episode should be out Saturday). Might crochet and I want to watch some horror. If anyone has any horror shorts they can recommend on youtube, I'd love to watch them!

Work. Management keep rotaing me on for weekends even after I asked them not to because it interferes with me going to church. So, work. Work and filling out job applications on company time.

Getting a massage tomorrow. Doing lunch with some friends on Sunday. Other than that, lots of sleep hopefully. And listening to some music and deciding if I want to put any of it on my ipod.

I want to say the horror short that sticks in my mind was called Childer (The Childer?)-- not jump-scare-y but *haunting*.

Classical music pieces you can't stand

I really, really hate Ravel's Boléro. It makes me nervous despite blandly puttering along for much, much longer than it has any right to. I hate how popular and overplayed it is. Everything about it sucks to my ears. There recently was a radio ad for an open air summer classical concert series in my area and it just played for a few seconds and it was enough to tick me off.

Beethoven's Symphony 9, part 4. Part 2 is much better, IMHO.

Pachelbel’s Canon.

Ein kleine nachtmusik isn't terrible, but pretty much every other Mozart piece is so much better.

Nutcracker is okay, but it is so, so overrused.

Re: Classical music pieces you can't stand

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The Nutcracker. Specifically the part that they used for the Alice in Wonderland world in Kingdom Hearts. I spent so long in that world the music drove me nuts and I can’t listen to it now.

Für Elise. Seriously, every time I hear this asked about/for or played or referred to in media I cringe and die a little. It's prob the most overplayed/overdone piano piece of all time next to Canon in D major for string instruments. Ugh.

Random stuff I'd do if I won the lottery.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Recently the mega millions or something went above 1.5 billion dollars and... just wow, I can't even fathom that amount of money. I also don't play the lottery, which makes this a really silly daydream, but here's what I'd do:

1) Put most of the money into a family trust with money to pay for all my siblings/niblings' college educations, with smaller amounts for travel (because I think traveling is really important and a lot of people can't afford to do it), weddings, emergencies, that kind of thing.

2) Completely renovate my house inside and out, with a major overhaul of the landscaping. Permaculture paradise, here I come! Also a big gourmet kitchen because I love to cook/bake.

3) Go to the farmers market and buy at least one thing from every single booth, including the crafts. In fact, go on a buying spree of a bunch of handmade things from local artisans and Etsy, all the stuff I always admired but couldn't afford.

4) Start a small army of food trucks serving tasty dishes that aren't available in my area, for free, to whoever wants it.

5) Big yearly donation to the food pantry, women's shelter, Planned Parenthood, animal shelter/Humane Society and other charities I like.

6) Massive celebratory dinner where I rent out my favorite sushi bar and invite all my friends and family.

6) New car. Maybe one of those nifty hybrids.

7) Build a huge playground for my dog.

... and so much more. I would have a blast, because while money can't buy you happiness, it can buy you financial security and a ton of cool stuff. How about you? What weird and wild things would you do with that kind of money?
