I Am Not A Robot!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2023-08-20 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Just lately, about every time I use Google, I have to do the little 'click here to prove you're a human' thing, which is just so FUCKING weird and annoying.

Yes, I have a VPN, but I've had it for almost a year, and this just started happening.
I mean, I'm googling an address here in my town, I'm googling a movie that's out right now, I'm googling books/authors.... It's maddening and baffling.

Here's what Google is saying, if anyone is interested....

"Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. This page checks to see if it's really you sending the requests, and not a robot. Why did this happen?

This page appears when Google automatically detects requests coming from your computer network which appear to be in violation of the Terms of Service. The block will expire shortly after those requests stop. In the meantime, solving the above CAPTCHA will let you continue to use our services.

This traffic may have been sent by malicious software, a browser plug-in, or a script that sends automated requests. If you share your network connection, ask your administrator for help — a different computer using the same IP address may be responsible. Learn more

Sometimes you may be asked to solve the CAPTCHA if you are using advanced terms that robots are known to use, or sending requests very quickly. "

It's been happening to me for quite some time. Ditto accessing Dreamwidth.

I recently started getting an error that says "You don't have permission to access 'http://www.fredmeyer.com/' on this server" when trying to order my groceries. I couldn't even use the app on my phone unless data was turned on AND wifi was turned off. Nothing about my internet set up has changed.

I haven't had this happen with Google yet (knock wood). Instagram, on the other hand...

Yup. I often get the Captcha when I search for something and I'm on my VPN (which is always)

What seemingly benign 'traditions' do you hate?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand secret family recipes. I always have to wonder how many recipes have been lost because someone's grandma never passed it on.

Re: What seemingly benign 'traditions' do you hate?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IME "secret family recipes" were the recipes on the back of the box of whatever a main ingredient was.

I hate the concept of Bachelor/Bachelorette parties. The idea of a "last hurrah", especially of a sexual nature (strippers), is so gross. Like, what is this het bullshit that you can't truly party once you're married? Aren't you supposed to be marrying someone you love? Shouldn't that mean you now have a partner for partying??

Most wedding traditions. They mostly have really sexist roots and while I know they mostly aren't that now, the history makes it impossible for me personally to enjoy.

99 of all wedding traditions.
bacherlor/ette parties, "giving away the bride", virginal white, throwing bouquets, "games" to determine how many kids they will have, asking the father of the bride for his consent etc etc.
also the "respect your elders" carte blanche.

100% with you on petty recipe hoarding. So glad no one in my immediate family is like that, but we've missed out on some neat things because other people felt like they'd stop being special if anyone else could make "their" signature dish.

What's on my mind right now, though, is the pile of lying to kids about holidays. Someone was posting rather shyly to a very large atheist forum, recently, wanting to know if people thought it would be okay to not go through the motions of the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny and Santa being real, and as I appreciated that my family never put me through that and didn't feel too isolated having to keep it to myself to not disillusion other kids, I wrote them a comment to that effect. Reassuring them that I don't look back on that with regret at all, and enjoyed the holidays anyway. There were a few of us, saying as much: immigrants from families that weren't trying super-hard to be as Americanized as possible, and a handful of Jews pointing out that, no, they didn't feel like their parents were cruel for not going along with the pop culture version of Christmas, either. But the vehemence from the people who apparently believed having to leave Santa behind was a right and proper childhood right of passage was really repellent to me. One thing is disagreeing, and another is acting like they have to claim every way but theirs is terrible parenting and depriving children of wonder.

And ... atheists here are not generally known for being staunch traditionalists, so the intensity of it surprised me.

Anyone else see it yet? It was so goooood. I hope it does well. :(

I want to watch it soon! So many people are backing it a bit in twt that I was worried it would end up being bad... Glad to hear it was good tho, relighted my interest!

It was okay. The theater was pretty empty though, and the feel I get from most people I know (standard anecdote is not data disclaimer here) is that it isn't really a must see movie. The DCEU is pretty much busted at this point, and I don't know anyone who is excited about their movies any more.

Re: Blue Beetle

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't gone, but there really seems to be an inverse proportion sometimes between "movies where the writing department bust their butts to come up with a compelling plot" and "movies anyone might want to see based on the title."

CW: Cancer

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
My Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier in the summer; today, I've gotten news that his Dad (my grandad, lives a long way away) has been hospitalised with blood cancer and resulting kidney failure.

My brain is struggling to process and I'm currently just angry at the world in general. I'm sad for grandad, but I'm completely fucking heartbroken that my Dad will now have to face losing a parent while still coming to terms with his own cancer.

Just feels like the universe is completely dumping on us as a family this year and I don't know how to hold it all together anymore. I want to make things better but I can't see how.

Not remotely close to the above comment. But I hate that even though I'm getting over a cold/flu/bug, because I have no sick days left, I have to go to work. Fever is gone, but I still don't feel great. But this year has sucked, and I've used up all my sick days and most of my vacation days.

I am so sick of fucking loud neighbors. NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR YOUR SOUND SYSTEM THROUGH THE WALLS, MUCH LESS FEEL IT VIBRATING. This fucking sucks because I WFH and this shit will go on during the day too, and I feel like I don't get to complain about it because it's during the day. But it's distracting AF.

TW Medical Stuff

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
My mum's currently in the hospital waiting for an operation to get rid of the gallstones trying to block her bile duct. She's worked herself up into a frenzy trying to care for her two disabled offspring (me included, though I'm trying not to be as heavy a burden) and her widowed mother with dementia. (When said mother was told about the situation, her response was 'What if she doesn't come back? I'll have to put the dog down', because her biggest priority is that sodding dog.)

It's been a fairly crap few months for her, all things considered. If I had the money, and she the time, I'd book her a cruise; god knows she needs it.

Anyone a Fan of Listening To Soundtracks?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Any favorite soundtracks for any shows/movies/games/etc?

Also, does anyone or has ever listened to a soundtrack without seeing the original source?
(Latter question inspired by me currently listening through a collection of cds that I had found from shows I haven't watched like Dawson's Creek and Queer as Folk).
