What is the least you've known about a fandom before jumping into the fanfic?

I am trying to figure out if watching the One Piece live action show will give me enough knowledge to read fic because Zoro/Sanji has a shit ton of it. My current fandoms are not producing much and I need new ones. Though, do I really want to read fic based on a manga/anime? Wade back into the world of Nani and Baka being randomly thrown out?

I knew absolutely nothing before jumping into the due South fandom. I chose it because I needed more fic to read and it was the largest fandom I could find at the time. This was back in the 90s and no local channel carried the show. I happened to join in the middle of the Ray Wars, so I chose my side based on my favorite authors. I did eventually pirate the show and watch it, but I definitely did fic first.

I hopped onto AO3 to look for Clive/Cid ala FF16 before the game came out purely based on early demo footage.

I watched one supercut of all the Brienne/Jaime scenes from GoT before reading fics for it. I did eventually watch the whole show though.

I assume it's like with a ton of animanga fic: lots and lots of AUs, so I assume the live action will probably give you enough knowledge to read a good chunk of fics (based on general experience, I've never tried to read One Piece fic... I also tend to find animanga fic, especially in huge fandoms, kinda bad and often ooc? So not knowing a ton might actually help there.)

I started reading Silmarillion fic before I actually read it. Started reading based on one fic on the Hobbit kink meme.

I don't have an answer but I can tell you that no, just watching the LA will give you only about 2% of the background for ZoSan fics. I write the pairing, every which way, and most fic is set post-Skypeia, post-Enies Lobby, and particlularly post-Thriller Bark for very crucial character development reasons. The incident at the Baratie is brought up as a "oh yeah back then..." in contrast to whatever present the fic is set in like...almost every time.

A favourite author has written something for it. That's usually my lowest threshold.

If an author I really like writes something in a fandom I've never seen any canon material for, I'll sometimes give it a try and depending on how much I like the fic, I may either seek out more fic or the canon. I did, at one point, read a bunch of fic for The Professionals (1977 UK), knowing only the bare bones of the premise of the show. I don't remember which writer started me reading it, but the canon wasn't at all readily available to me in the US at the time. I have, way after the fact, seen some clips, but I've never watched a full episode.

Yeah, they only have some background in LA. But you would get gist of characters and their dynamic I guess. They are not even that shippy in a LA. I think you can read up some summaries of manga after watching series.

Answering you question. I don't think I ever jumped into fanfics without knowledge, it's really not interesting to me.
I read a fic for I think Dragon Age for a fandom challenge and that's about it.

After having to wait for the Playstation release of Baldur's Gate 3 I could theoretically finally play it but I'm completely stuck on the character creation.

With D&D based games, I usually always play a certain character race and class but I'm not entirely in love with the available face presets for the race in question. So it's mainly a matter of if I should be breaking my own tradition or not. And that's not even starting on the class I want to play - usually I play rogues but having played Divinity by the same publisher, I found rogue to be not an ideal class. Meh. I just want to play the game already but my own brain sabotages me.

I swear Bon Appetit is having an editorial crisis, and it's making me cringe whenever I see that publication's pieces turn up in search results.

My mother is going to make me sick from stress or end up killing me by causing my blood sugars to rise from stress and improper, unbalanced eating.

I'm a complete mental wreck at this point. Had sleep issues for years. But it was always manageable. This year has been generally awful, though. And various things have gotten me into a cycle a couple times where I couldn't sleep, was scared to sleep, and then was more scared to sleep because of how tired I was.

I honestly think at this point I'm scared of sleep. Scared to sleep, scared not to sleep, just nighttime in general is causing anxiety. I find it a little easier to sleep when it is still light.

I have a therapist, though I'm not seeing her until next week. But I'm not sure what to do, not sure how I can keep functioning like this.

I'm a complete wreck.

I used to love Shin Ramyun. But covid fucked up how it tastes. So now I just eat Maruchan with red flakes. :( I also drain most of the water off before adding the seasoning.

In "I'm Just Ken" from the Barbie soundtrack, Ken sings the line:
"Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blond fragility?"

Which I misheard as "a life of blond virginity"

It seemed logical given his unrequited interest in Barbie.

Think movies you saw a long time after they came out, comics you read that used to have huge fandoms, books you always heard about and never read until later on, stuff popular I'm your childhood that you only checked out as an adult...
