It was eye opening to me to really realize how slowly a lot of people read. I can absorb the words at a glance and still be able to focus on the visual details of a scene. Some people just can't do that, like my dad. I don't really get it, because that's just so not my experience, but it's something I try and be mindful of.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Same experience with my best friend! He says that he spends so much time focusing on reading he can't take in anything else.

Same. I've always loved reading so I'm able to gain a lot of written information quite quickly. I've also realised I'm doubly weird because when I think about subbed shows I've watched I remember the dialogue as if I heard the characters speaking. My brain merges the sounds of the voices with the words I've read and then forgets the reading part.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well as long as you treat yourself like an anti, and shut the fuck up about it, you can be as prejudiced as you like.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I always find this "discourse" hilarious and confusing at the same time because I always have subs on (I need to read the dialogues). but sometimes I also prefer the dubbed versions, depending on the movies/show. But I ALWAYS have subs on, so when the subs in my native language are not available I just go with the english ones since they are the most available on the net. yeah, it's complicated lol

BTW I'm ESL so when I watch something dubbed it's usually a north american show dubbed in my native language (CSI or Law & Order are prime examples of shows I only watch dubbed). Or an old Japanese anime I grew up with. Sometimes a french show (I will NEVER watch miraculous ladybug in its original dub again lol I refuse) and chinese movies. If I got used to the dubbed voices before having access to the original version then I stay with the dubbed version. No shame. I bet it's the same with a lot of people who get used to American/English or whatever dubs.

I also speak fluently 3 languages and I understand 5. so... ??? I generally don't get this discourse because they always go on about "people being lazy, they don't want to learn a new language" and that's not always the case. Some people just want to chill and entertainment shouldn't be a "job" that entails some language requirements.
For me dubs is mostly about accessibility. The more the better. And some movies and TV series are better when dubbed because the voice actors do a better job than the actual original actors (YES, IT HAPPENS).

Some shows are horrible when dubbed (Supernatural dubbed is a big NO-NO for me), but I find compilation of various dubs super interesting. Sometimes they do little adaptation and show various cultural changes and I love that!

Now... people who prefer watching western stuff dubbed in Japanese... Those are the real weirdos. I sometimes do that to laugh at how horrible their dubs are. AND DAMN, THEY'RE JAPANESE. THEY HAVE SOME OF THE BEST VOICE ACTING IN THE WORLD LOL WHY ARE THEY SO BAD AT DUBBING FOREIGN MEDIA????

(obviously if someone is actively participating in the fandom, I expect them to be at least familiar with the original dub and acknowledge any changes that happened through translation/adaptation)

I agree about dub being accessibility issue. I am maybe snarky and wary of people who uses dub (a lot of the time it IS "I can't be bothered with your stupid language and your stupid culture". And I've met a person who straight up asked why anyone even needs subs), but I think that dub is a must anyway.

I'm kind of a nerd in the sense that I love hearing other languages so I prefer watching subs over dubs. And even for shows in English I prefer to have the subs on because I feel like it's easier for me to focus.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It once took me half a second of looking at the TV screen while someone was talking to realize it was a dub. There's just something about the sound quality and the voice acting that stick out, to say nothing of the mismatch between mouth movements and dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-25 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I hate dubbing. I can just about stand animation because the mouths aren't out of sync - say, Pokemon - but for adult cartoons the dubbing just seems odd, odd word choices etc, plus as you say a lot of live action dubs destroy the background SFX and makes everything obviously unreal or something.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care what others choose to do with subs/dubs, but I've personally always preferred subs in anything live-action because the mouth movements not lining up with the spoken words grates on me in a very short amount of time. Cartoons can get away with it though and certainly for more recent anime releases on Netflix or elsewhere I find the dubs to be perfectly fine. But I think western VA for anime has gotten better over time.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, no matter how good the acting is I just cannot watch live-action dubs because the mouth flaps will distract me. Animated dubs are fine.

I don't care what people prefer. But I find anyone who goes on and on about how one is automatically superior to the other absolutely insufferable.

I like subs because I have a hard time understanding most speech.

I second screen so I prefer dubs.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like both depending on the quality of the voice acting. Typically that means I'd sooner gravitate towards subs cause Japanese VAs are overall better, but if the universe is set in an English setting or if the dubs kick it out of the park then I'd prefer that.

Fma/Rurouni kenshin I actually prefer the dubs because the Mc sounds in the subs sound too feminine to me.

Gits is another one where it's actually a toss up. Both sub and dub are good.

If I have to work on something while I'm watching, I need a dub. I still want subtitles on no matter what language bc sometimes I have to back up and read the words bc my audio processing is for shit. So I see both as important.

I don't have any prejudice, I just find dubbed stuff so annoying and off-putting, it *is* a little baffling.
But my brother can't do subs, as he says he reads too slowly and half the time the subs are gone before he's done, so.... There is that.

I imagine anyone with a reading issue would prefer dubs, and that's all good. It's just too bad they're mostly so awful.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-25 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I just can't watch dubbed anything regardless of what the original language was. I have never encountered a dub that didn't feel stiff/wooden to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-25 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I am a dub hater for the stupidest, shallowest reason ever: I DESPISE hearing shrill American accents. You know the type. Honestly it always shits me hearing anime characters talk in American accents. I know it's not reasonable but jesus, I have to watch everything else in American accents thanks to cultural monopoly, so watching something in Japanese/Swedish/Spanish/etc is a very welcome break.

Also I feel like you miss things! After watching anime for years you start to pick up on the nuance of certain phrases, after hearing them and seeing them translated in different ways.

When it comes to anime, I like both. A lot of time I'll try to pick which one I like btter. Just for fun, here is a list of where I tried both and what I liked better.

Sub
-Madoka Magica
-Neon Genesis Evangellion
-Sarazanmai
-Natsume's Book of Friends
-Demon Slayer

Dub
-Fruits Baskest (2019)
-Cowboy Bebop
-FMA
-Baccano!
-Aggretsuko
-Kaguya

As long as you’re not raining on anyone’s parade, I think it’s fine to prefer subs. I tend to prefer dubs and I love listening to different dubs. There are lots of things I don’t like about Crunchyroll, but I love having access to different dubs and I’ll watch them even if I don’t know the language.

Some stuff just doesn’t work dubbed though. Shows like Doctor Who and Supernatural lose a little something when I listen to them dubbed. And something might have a perfectly good dub, but I’ll still prefer the sub (like the Haikara-san movie).

My hearing is not that great so I watch everything with subs, and I like hearing the original language. Occasionally I used to watch an anime dubbed if it had a really good dub (e.g. Cowboy Bebop) but I always watched the sub too. I do wonder if I made a mistake using the Japanese voices on Persona 5 though. Apparently I missed out on some jokes that way.
But I refuse to even have an opinion on what other people like.

Sir, Reddit is that way.
