Favorite minor characters

Who are some of your favorite more minor characters?

Re: Favorite minor characters

I love the background characters in the game SOMA, they feel like real people I would meet with just a few lines of dialogue. Frictional Games in general has well written background characters but that game has the strongest IMO.

Mello from Death Note. He's a fun kind of pissy.

The French Herald in Branagh's Henry V. You can tell how much he gets to admire Henry, that determined young king, through the course of the film, while remaining a loyal Frenchman as far as he can.

Smile

What media has made you smile lately?

Re: Smile

Been catching up on my Disney movies. Got around to seeing Godmothered and Elemental, both of which I enjoyed very much.

Watching the Monster High cartoons is making me and my partner laugh a lot, we are into dolls and toys as a hobby and usually don't care about media related with the toys so it's been fun to check out something we normally wouldn't and see another side of the MH fandom. The media is surprisingly cute and just the type of light hearted silly thing I needed to see right now.

We've been watching battlebots all weekend and it is a BLAST! Like WWE except there are no concusions. A spinning bot ripped up a burger-bot and I about cried with glee.

Sparks! Fire! Drones! Screws! Hammers! Saws! Bots that look like ducks and sharks and krackens!

Netflix One Piece is genuinely just a good time. I was smiling basically from start to finish, except for the emotional parts.

Silly dilemma

(Anonymous) 2023-09-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
So a general fandom group I'm part of is approaching that time of year again... the Secret Santa exchange.

I had a mixed experience last year (I even ranted about it once here). Got a great gift, but wasn't even acknowledged for the gift I gave. It left a bad taste in my mouth but I said nothing to anyone. I really don't want to make a big deal and start acting like I'm entitled to some sort of compensation for being ignored. Yes, even though I think it's just basic courtesy to THANK somebody for their gift. I don't mind if it was hated, but the lack of acknowledgment sucks.

The dilemma? I want to sign up again despite all of that. But... if that same person signs up again, there's a chance I could get matched with them again. Now, I know that when I sign up for events, I do take that risk of not being acknowledged (even though people shouldn't have to prepare for that shit). But I kind of want to say something to the organizers too? Like I said, I'm not entitled to anything, I get it. But I'd hate it if that person turned around and ignored their gift giver this year too (though part of me suspects that won't happen). On the other hand, I don't want to stir up some unnecessary shit, and then the organizers feel obligated to explicitly state something like "please be courteous and thank your gift-giver" (which should already be understood) and ruin something that should be fun and lighthearted.

I'm sure I'm just overthinking it though. Maybe I'll get over it in the meantime. Hell, maybe that person won't even sign up this time. One can only hope.

Been there, and I feel you. :(

Depends on the experience level and bandwidth of the organizers, but I've noticed some exchanges have a policy that any recipient who fails to acknowledge their gift can't participate the following year.

Sorry, I don't have a solution, just commiserating. It feels a lot worse than silly to get ghosted like that.

I hate it when people do that. I've been in exchanges (smaller ones, which probably helps) where the mods are more diligent about making it clear people are expected to respond to their gift, and those who don't aren't allowed to sign up again. It's silly that such a thing has to be enforced, but honestly, people will sign up for exchanges with the best of intentions and then flake because they cannot, will not be honest with themselves about being able to finish.

Talk to the mods and say you don't want to be matched with your last year's recipient due to this reason. If that's not the kind of thing they do, they can say so.

RIP David McCallum

(Anonymous) 2023-09-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
He died today of natural causes at 90. Some of his more prominent roles were Illya Kuryakin on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS. Weirdly, today is 'NCIS day' on CBS, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the show with a mini-marathon.

Huh. Didn't realize he'd done some voice acting for DC and Diablo 3. RIP.

Oh, that's so sad. He was so great - snarky as hell - in MfU, and equally great in Colditz. That's a part of my childhood and young adulthood gone forever.

I will preface this by saying I was a huge fan for decades. Today I spent some time googling him and was absolutely gutted to find he was a Trump supporter. :(

RIP Ducky, but also RIP my adoration.

Biggest, Smallest, Never-Again and Most Favorite Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2023-09-26 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of like death, marry or kill but fandom edition. OR - if you have only been in one/fewer than 4 fandoms; what was the best part/worst part of your fandom experience so far and a fanwork that has stayed with you the longest (like an amv you think of when you hear a song or THE fanfic that you love the most, etc)

Re: Biggest, Smallest, Never-Again and Most Favorite Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2023-09-26 04:13 am (UTC)(link)

Biggest: Either Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh!

Smallest: Black★Rock Shooter.

Never Again: RWBY. That fandom is the reason for many of my current boundaries.

Most Favorite: DM-era Yu-Gi-Oh! Two of my favorite fics for it are ribcages (https://archiveofourown.org/works/1126934) and Kesil (https://archiveofourown.org/works/10967766)

Biggest: Hetalia
Smallest: Charlie the Unicorn
Favorite: Toss-up between Star Trek DS9 and xxxHolic. Both have ships that have reduced me into an emotional mess that was prodded by some fantastic fanworks.

Biggest: Harry Potter, MCU, and LOTR in the early 2000s

Smallest: Larp. There's a few hundred of us and maybe a dozen "hype" posts every month. It's fantastic and I know folks personally. We have lore and meta and shit for each others characters. I don't even want to name it, it's too intimate.

Most Favorite: Comic books. Which, yes, is super broad BUT there are like 6 super heroes I love and by god I adore them all and every new panel is a joy.

Never Again: Avatar the Last Airbender/Korra. It's not that they were especially bad I will just never go for a cartoon aimed at kids ever again. Shit got rough in there, it was humiliating and toxic, and the fanworks didn't make up for it like the biggest fandoms.

Biggest: MCU
Smallest: Not sure, been in some very tiny fandoms before (handful of people). Usually for indie games.
Never again: Homestuck. I have the most awful horror stories from this fandom. Today I still don't follow anyone online if they post a lot of Homestuck or have it as their avatar because of the bad associations.
Favorite: Comics more generally speaking like the above anon, love the medium and have some absolutely favorite characters
