What hobby do you wish you could into?

(Anonymous) 2023-09-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could learn to machine sew clothes but I don't have the space for it.

So many crafts. Woodworking, woodturning, pottery, diorama building, doll customisation.... mostly not doing it because of lack of space, lack of tools and lack of funds.

All of them. Illness and pain stop me from doing so. :(

I'm so sorry, nonny - it's the same for me!

Gentle hugs if wanted. It's such a drag.

*gently hugs back* Thanks, nonny. It really is the worst.

You don’t need hardly any space at all! Just enough clear space on a table to fit a serger/overlocker machine, which is smaller than a sewing machine. Buy good patterns (Waves and Wild is a GREAT place to start even if you don’t love anything they have). You want a pattern that tells you how much of what kind of fabric to buy. Your serger should come with four thread cones already but if it doesn’t, you’ll need those (or any four spools of thread). A small sharp pair of scissors (or big if you already have some) and a seam ripper. There you go. That’s it. You don’t need a giant room with thousands of fabrics and a trillion notions. You can easily buy only what you need when you need it. Brother makes a fab little entry level serger that will last for many years. I got mine off Amazon using their monthly payment plan (not the Affirm one, just a regular Amazon thing they offer on some products sometimes). It’s been three years of heavy use and I’ve done all the maintenance and servicing myself and it’s going to last me many more years.

This. I just have my sewing machine set up on a desk and it works just fine. You don't need any more space than that.

+1! Don’t know the brand off the top of my head, but I’ve got a tiny sewing machine I put on the kitchen counter to use and put in a reusable grocery bag to tote around my apartment when I need space. :D

ehh if you're clearing off table space for a machine, a serger/overlocker isn't much smaller than a very base level Singer or Kenmore. Serging has its place but it's not the universal machine that someone learning to make clothes would want. UNLESS those clothes were only leggings and hoodies.

that said OP I also encourage a go for it and don't let space limitations stop you! I know quilters who struggle to have space to ever lay out their work but also make it happen because they just love quilting that much - and quilting takes up a shitload of space compared to garment-making. the most space you'll ever need is for cutting patterns, so if you can just commandeer the dining room table or living room floor for an hour here and there, you can still make small space sewing work!

Eh, I wouldn't start with a serger, because that's most useful for knits and my old 1960s olive green solid metal Kenmore takes up about as much table space as a microwave and I can use it for other stuff.

Keeping a fabric and notions and pattern stash takes up more room, but provided OP is more disciplined than me, one projects worth of material isn't so bad.

But I was gonna suggest OP take continuing ed or community college sewing classes, if those are a thing where they are. Then they can learn enough to know if it'd be worth it to shell out for a machine.

And speaking of machines, OP, if you do get one, get a vintage all metal machine if you can and the weight isn't an issue. They're not that heavy; I can lift mine one handed. And they're insanely durable; mine was my mom's from when she was in high school, and my dad threw it across the room once, and it still works.

Writing or Playing and Instrument

Both take an attention span and patience I just can't seem to muster. I'm much better at active hobbies - woodworking, gardening, hiking, etc.

Someday I want to learn fencing.

Would love to learn guitar. I actually have one and everything, and I've seen free beginner lessons on the internet. But I can't muster up the fucks, probably due to past trauma. And if I'm not that excited, it means I don't care, and therefore I don't deserve to learn such an amazing skill.

the problem I had learning any instrument (piano/keys, then guitar) was not having a place to go with it. that is, no goal. without a goal, it's so much harder to reason yourself into learning an instrument.

I do know how to play chords on a guitar, I got that far, but the thing that ended up killing it hobby-wise was not knowing where to go from there. like, was I going to start a band? no. was I going to learn lead guitar with solos and all of that? no, I'm not that competent (I have a hard time getting my hands to perform two independent tasks. forget adding things like singing!). with piano you can at least occasionally find an unattended instrument in a lobby and fritter a bit at some old Bach etude and people go ohhh nice and clap and you feel good. Singing, too, there are a lot more opportunities to use that even just for fun and not profit. Guitar? If you can't find the discipline or the muscle memory/talent to do something like classical performance pieces, it's utterly useless. I played an open mic night with two other people exactly once and was utterly mortified, there was no way I could form a band or play other sessions with my rudimentary rhythm guitar. it has a high price of admission, too - you can read books and watch tutorials, but there are very few opportunities to buy a guitar with which to practice for a cheap price and then never do anything with it. My Epiphone was $350 back in 1995 and that was still considered cheap, I can't imagine what the entry bar is now.

At least it's not even more utterly useless like playing bodhran. I learned that 20 years ago! Have I ever found an Irish music session to sit in on? No, no I have not. At least that one I could pick up and practice with a cardboard box, never had to invest in a drum.

I wish I could crochet but I don’t have the dexterity or concentration

I can really relate to you with the machine sewing situation. In general, I would like to learn how to sew.

Also, playing an instrument, especially strings. I played violin when I was in 4th grade, never picked it up again but I do miss playing it. Always wanted to learn how to play the guitar solely so that I can play really cool guitar solos in songs I love whenever I want. Have wanted to learn to play the piano but never got into it.

Recently wanted to get into roller skating because I recall loving this pair of roller skates my sister had that I ended up using a lot when I was a kid (it was in the mid 1990s so everyone was into roller blading and roller skating was for lame-os so of course my ankles were too weak for roller blades but I picked up on roller skating because it was easier). I stopped roller skating because by a certain point they were too small for me. Haven't mustered up the effort to buy skates and protective gear to get this thing going.

I have always wanted to get into photography, especially traditional film photography. Seems like a time intensive hobby that also calls for money and space. One day...

Acting. I enjoyed Drama class in high school. Would there be any harm in joining a local acting class just to act because I enjoyed doing it in school? Never considered that this could simply be a hobby to do in my free time until last week. Like, I don't need to have an excuse of actually wanting to have an acting career to take up the hobby.

And a lot of other things. Like I've always wanted to draw but I'm not good at it at all.

I'd live to learn an Instrument but getting lessons as an adult feels near impossible.

Sewing and crocheting for me, but my chronic shoulder/wrist pain doesn't help with that. Especially crocheting. My hands are too fucked up for it :(

I'd also like to journal more, but if I write more than 10 minutes straight my thumb begins to ache. Writing with a fountain pen is better for my pain, but still... sigh.
I can still draw and paint for a few hours a day, but that's it.
