It's never happened to me. I always find it odd when someone can't separate a fandom from its media.

I've never had something ruined by fandom, but it came close. I ended up completely disengaging from the fandom, though, because there were just too many shitty people bullying people who had a different headcanon than them, or people who shipped the same pairings but shipped them the "wrong" way, or didn't love the same characters they did. I've thought of going back and just blocking the assholes, but there wasn't enough good to outweigh the bad, and I have other things to spend time on anyway.

I think because they don't understand the difference between "not my taste" and "objectively not pleasing". He's perfectly okay looking.

Voltron turned into a trainwreck in the end anyway but I started hating it because of the fandom long before that.

OP

Thank you, secret maker! Love the choice of picture.

As a former SPN fan who stopped watching halfway through the series because it became unwatchable... the fact that you're still pressed about it this many years later delights me to no end.

I once started reading a fan's guide to it (while it was still airing) and when I got to the part that said "don't worry, those female characters never stick around long," I got afraid to interact with the fandom. Also I was mostly interested in seeing them kick ass on some demons and after a while I wasn't sure the show was about that.

A single google search got me this answer in like the 2nd result:

"The Killers' Human single is known for posing the immortal question: "Are we human or are we dancer?" But what does it actually mean?

As Brandon Flowers told Rolling Stone in 2008, “It’s taken from a quote by [Hunter S.] Thompson."

The gonzo journalist and author is quoted as saying: "We’re raising a generation of dancers, afraid to take one step out of line". Flowers claims he "ran" with this idea in the song."

And the rest of the article was Brandon Flowers defending the bad grammar as an artistic choice. So there you go.

That person sounds like the equivalent of the type of person who complains about every female actress who doesn't look like a supermodel. Ugh.

As someone who still gets triggered by hearing "Carry On My Wayward Son", you chose correctly.

I got freaked out by the Sherlock fandom on tumblr, especially when people started saying they were sociopaths like Sherlock. I mean I guess you can theoretically be a self-diagnosed sociopath but really? I watched the first episode anyway and wanted to smack everybody in it, so it wasn't just the fandom.

I don't use TV Tropes because I don't trust the judgment of the contributors. But I get the sentiment. I enjoy getting into a fandom after its heyday and deciding for myself whether the main ships are worth it or not.

Whose fandom stopped you from watching/playing something?

Firefly. The Whedon fans just ruined that show utterly for me. And Supernatural too, damn fans are insane.

I get this with Lois McMaster Bujold, sometimes. Love all her characters but her older man/younger woman kink is NOT my kink and sometimes it gets grating.

T. Kingfisher's romances most often come with a big scoop of fealty kink and if that's not your bag I could see going :/ :/ :/ about it.

Star Wars new episodes, movie 2. I was meh on Ray but kinds digging Adam Driver but the fandom went crazy on skin colours, genders and ship wars. I noped out.

What's your drink of choice?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Alcoholic or otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
this is my reaction too. i would probably have enjoyed the show, but the fandom is so creepy and nuts that i not only stay far away from it, but i also have an immense hatred for it for no reason other than the fans

Honest question

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Do most people find all couples they like "sexy"? Like, I have ships that I just think are really cute and love together, and then I have ships I like to read all the porn about, but I honestly don't think I would ever describe any of the ships I like as sexy.

As for Nettle & Bone I liked the pairing, but liked that the romantic relationship wasn't really the focus. I would have preferred no romance at all, but have to admit the end of that book left me with a big ol sappy smile on my face.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, that's actually kind of interesting. Thanks.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol I am right there with you OP and this made me laugh so thanks.

Looking for a scene from an anime

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love if someone can tell me what this anime scene I saw months ago on tiktok is from. It was people standing outside a skyscraper and they were on the phone. And they were like, he's something something. Implying that they were talking to the person on the phone. And then like a bad guy and good guy are falling down the side of the building. And they are fighting as they fall. Possibly "running" down the building?

Do you not make associations in your brain? Where your brain pairs certain things and come to mind unbidden?

What is your least popular ship or kink?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Or trope. Something you look for in your fandoms that seems hard to find.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-16 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
As a long-time follower of the Molyneux sisters, I'm not too worried about them being so tone-deaf as to make the two characters endgame. They're too diligent about emotional realism.

See: how they pulled Moon back from what was apparently the same set-up with Debbie and pivoted to Quinn instead.
