In this instance it is changing the character and yet people keep insisting race swapping is no big deal. The second a character's race comes up as an issue then the race swap did change the character. It's hardly ever the case the race swap goes unmentioned.

If a job is only open to whites you're discriminating on skin color. If a job is only open to non-whites then you're discriminating on skin color. It's all racism.

Torture is a really unreliable way of getting accurate information out of people, though. It negatively impacts memory, and it incentives lying: people will say anything to get it to stop. You're far more likely to wrest a false confession out of a torture victim than you are to gain actual intel.

Yes, that's precisely the issue. Merely listening to science can't solve these problems, as there's still the matter of what we do with it.

Bit shocking to read, but it would be very smart to make that marriage happen

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It is getting mentioned because of racism though.
Are there a lot of absolutly unnecessary or poorly thought through casting changes? Sure, there are. Are they actually change character or is it just blatant racism from white power crowd? Depends.

He is brothel owner though. So he still exploits and destroys human lives but in a different way. So it's still delicious thing but with an interesting sexism twist.

But we are talking about western shows/movies. So it applies.
Yes. Actually you can be absolutely racist against minority (in case for example Japan, white people), but it sort of a no in a western white world

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really though. The whole "racism is ONLY racism if it's prejudice+power" definition isn't the one and only valid racism definition there is. All prejudiced or violent action against someone based on their skin colour is racism.

nayrt but this. In the end, you're just hurting somebody for no reason.

Oh I am aware, doesn't mean someone wouldn't be tempted to do it on the off-chance it doesn't work. Like, there was a case in my country where a police detective threatened a kidnapper with violence/torture because they were trying to find the toddler the guy kidnapped. The detective was (rightfully) charged for it but I can absolutely understand the desperation he would have felt to do everything possible to get the kid's location (the child ended up dying) so... yeah.

doesn't work = does work

I mean, there have been cases where people were locked up/locked in big groups and left to die to keep a disease from spreading. Not saying it was the right thing to do but the people in charge certainly felt justified.

Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's quarantine, not genocide. It's tragic, but letting people die to prevent the spread of disease doesn't fall under the definition of genocide. They are not being targeted for their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc.

Probably because Marshall Lee/Gary have none of what Bubbline had. They're too cute and unproblematic to be very interesting.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That one looks remarkably like furry Beverly Crusher, right???

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Both can be true.

It's fine to re-imagine/reinterpret characters in any way you want to.

AND

Certain viewpoints in certain places and times and situations are under-explored and therefor more interesting to some people.

I haven't watched IWAV but Vampire = leech on society that feeds on humans considered lesser = nobility = slave owner *tracks* and a black and/or mixed race slave owner feels like it could have thematic ties to a young vampire with a lot of qualms about the vampire lifestyle (deathstyle?). Also very New Orleans. Stay different NOLA.

The thing about torture is that it doesn't work.

Like, we could debate if cutting a kid's hand off to save them from scurvy was valid. I mean, scurvy is really bad actually and we have great prosthetics and they could live a long and happy life without a hand. But cutting of a kid's hand has nothing to do with scurvy so the debate is fundamentally nonsense.

We haven't even gotten to the point where people can be honest with themselves. People are all for the peaceful solution to whatever problem until there are actual sides involved. Too many are still in the zero-sum game us vs them mentality. I experienced this myself when I went to visit family in the southern US. General bitching about how life is getting worse. I mention all the socialist solutions without saying the word socialism and they were alllll on board. Someone actually says the word and everyone expressed their hatred of socialism. Suddenly, striking was unamerican...

People have to be able to recognize their goals, set aside their emotional response to the situation, and recognize how best to achieve them (science). Unfortunately, we're still on step 1.5.

a lot of them are very pale

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And ironically that "racism is prejudice+power" was written by a white woman. You would think they would use something written by a POC instead...

Would it be okay to cut a kid’s hand off the hand went evil?

Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?

You can understand someone's motives and acknowledge that their methods are wrong. I can't understand any argument trying to make those methods appear acceptable in any way.
