Workshopping a meme

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have this idea.

It's Frodo and Gandalf sitting side by side in the wagon as it rolls into the shire.

Frodo: Tell me something of your travels, Gandalf!
Gandalf, face obscured: Cattle die, kinsmen die, but those who are remembered never die.
Frodo, face falling: ....Gandalf?
A different "wizard," face visible, one eye missing, a raven peeking around his head: GUESS AGAIN, HALFLING

I mean, there are plenty of wizard characters you could do this with so it might work.

Have you ever contacted a manufacturer about a product?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
My new bottle of melatonin has a weird texture and taste. So thinking of contacting the manufacturer cuz I don't got the receipt for them.

Re: Have you ever contacted a manufacturer about a product?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I bought a pack of applesauces and they tasted off. I contacted the manufacturer, gave them a number on the packaging, and they sent me a coupon for a free pack of applesauces and an apology note.

Re: Have you ever contacted a manufacturer about a product?

I definitely have.

Once found some pieces of plastic inside a sealed bag of cereal. Contacted the manufacturer and mailed them the plastic and the flap from the box that had all the batch details. Wasn't expecting a response but received a lovely thank you letter for notifying them and free replacement cereal.

More recently I tried a new brand of toothpaste. Using it once made my whole mouth burn for hours. Contacted the manufacturer and although they didn't believe there was anything wrong with their product with a few emails back and forth I received a refund which was all I was looking for.

What foods have you tried because of media?

Did you like it? Hate it? Did it live up to expectations?

I think I've liked everything I tried because of media. Rice pudding (The Secret Garden), bread pudding (Ramona Quimby), stuffed grape leafs (Vlad Taltos).

Every Japanese food I've had that I saw in a manga first has been amazing, 10/10 would eat forever. I have not tried omurice, though, because I just can't with ketchup in rice. Sorry Japan but what the fuck. I'll stick to fish dishes, dango, taiyaki, takoyaki, everything yaki lbr, I even had gyutan while in Sendai because of Date Masamune's portrayals in fiction and it was super delicious. I even grow shiso in my garden to eat after seeing it in so many animes wrapped around mochi. So, so delicious.

takoyaki is my favourite side dish at sushi bars

Weirdly no, but media has put me in the mood for certain food I'd tried before.

I tried watercress sandwiches because they were mentioned in a book I liked. They were kinda gross.

I tried Turkish Delight and didn't enjoy it... mostly because I really don't enjoy floral flavors at all, and it was rose-flavored Turkish Delight. Pistachio was better, but it's still not something I'd eat regularly.

Re: What foods have you tried because of media?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Common answer, but Turkish Delight. I found it in a store many years after having read the book, and in the time between I had seen multiple online comments/discussions about people trying it and hating it. I tried it anyway, and liked it.

I wanted to try crystallized pineapple after seeing it in Harry Potter, but never found any.

Started trying to cook more Chinese dishes because of LiZiqi and other channels. Cooking them myself because there are almost no authentic Chinese restaurants where I live and the ones that exist are Sichuan style places and I hate/am oversensitive to Sichuan peppercorn so... meh.

I don't think so. Or maybe I did but I don't remember.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
how stupid it is to argue that because abortion isn't always wrong, rape and genocide also aren't always wrong.

Like, part of why abortion isn't always wrong is due to the existence of rape. If rape is sometimes right, then that means that it might sometimes be wrong to have an abortion after you've been raped. How the fuck do you adjudicate that?

Re: I'm still trying to wrap my head around

I think you're getting caught up with the idea that right and wrong are binary. It's not, it's a spectrum. Some things are never "right" but they're the best option and we don't treat it like it's wrong. Example: It's wrong to steal, but if someone put explosives on you and forced you to rob a bank, no one will think badly of you for bank robbery, even though you were the one to do the action of robbing a bank. You won't get charged for it, either, because we understand that the threat of death is exculpatory. There are degrees of rightness and wrongness. Context matters.

Rape and genocide are never right. Because they have specific definitions, and words mean things. You start misleading people with bullshit, then you get people who believe that raping people or committing genocide is okay, or that something that isn't rape/genocide in the least somehow falls under the definition of rape/genocide.

Abortion is not up for debate, and certainly not "moral" ones.

Have anyone ever told you that you are exhausting person? If not, I am telling you now, it's for greater good.

Also abortion is only wrong when person undergoing is pressured into it. There is nothing morally wrong about woman not having a child

Late Response Thread

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
This is a late response to the thread yesterday about teenage trick-or-treaters. I'm only drawing on my childhood as an enthusiastic trick-or-treater.

I always recalled seeing middle school and high schoolers trick-or-treating. Not in large numbers, but enough for me to notice a few here and there. I don't ever recall older kids being rowdy or rude while I was trick-or-treating.

In my teen years/young adulthood, most years I didn't trick-or-treat but years I did they were fun and my friends and I weren't treated like trouble makers. Also in my late teens in early 20s I dressed up and went trick-or-treating with my younger sister since I'm 16 years older than her. I looked youthful enough that I'm sure many people thought I was 13 or 14.

All this to say, teenagers are at a crossroads of wanting to do more adult things but also wanting to stay connected to their childhood.
I think it's healthy to encourage teenagers to explore both and that there's nothing wrong with them if one or the other doesn't appeal to them.

Of course, be a responsible adult and call out/prevent shitty teen behavior. But IMO to say teens are rude and rowdy and therefore they need to grow up and stop ruining your Halloween...I don't agree with that.

I had a tough upbringing and I know some teens/YA out there still celebrate Halloween like they're 7 and just because some teens are rude doesn't mean all teenagers shouldn't be allowed to enjoy "childish" things.

Re: Late Response Thread

(Anonymous) 2023-11-03 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Another point I'd like to add to yours. To people who think teenagers shouldn't trick-or-treat:

You don't know what people have gone through. Maybe that teenager "ruining" your Halloween by being there is developmentally delayed. Maybe they had a shitty childhood and were never allowed to trick-or-treat before. You don't know these people (and they don't owe you their medical history or their trauma), so maybe instead of assuming they should just grow up, let them do their thing and call out bad behavior instead of assuming that there's a bad age.
