They are attempting to win back the crowd that got pissed off by Moffat and Chibbers, but without undoing any of the shit Chibbers and Moffie did that pissed them off. So that is doomed to failure on that score, but they are recalling stuff from the non Chibnall era that means the both of the Chibbers fans are gonna be pissed off at the reminder that Doctor Who was anything other than that, so doomed on that score too. The moral of the story, work out who you want to please and stick with it.

So just hit that motherfucking big red reset button already and get us out of this shit before you Chib us into another twenty year cancellation.

Generally agree on this tbh. I hope the plot over the next two specials can justify it somehow, because as much as I love Donna Noble, The Star Beast did feel a lot like RTD just going back to his best stuff from the past.

They are attempting to win back the literal millions of casual viewers who drifted away over the years, from all the ridiculously convoluted plot lines and emphasis on specialness instead of ordinary (Moffat); and/or all the obscure knowledge of Who-lore that only the most in-depth, decades-old fans would care about (Chibnall).

RTD never forgot that Doctor Who has to appeal to as broad a viewer base as possible. Both Moffat and Chibnall kind of forgot that.

I say this as a Chibnall fan who enjoyed Thirteen's storyline.

I generally agree with this. I think fandom sometimes forget they aren’t the ones that keep a show going. I’m frankly amazed they didn't cancel it during Twelve’s run because the viewing figures were abysmal. I’d guess merch sales were still strong enough to justify one more regeneration. They came very close to cancelling during Thirteen and bringing RTD back is a last desperate attempt to keep it going.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet he refuses to do the one thing that would win back the crowds, and decanonize the late Moffat/Chibnall era nonsense. Instead RTD is doubling down on it.

RTD only cared about his precious DoctorRose bullshit and how they were the One True Pairing. So yes, he DID forget the Doctor had to have broad appeal. People just put up with it.

You do know that fans are calling him Fourteen because RTD and Auntie Beeb insist on that, right? And it does make a kind of sense; Ten was gone and didn’t experience what 11-13 experienced. The base characterisation is still the same as Ten but already we’re seeing the influences of everyone between. And in a couple weeks Fifteen will take over and have a new characterisation.

I loved the Ten-Donna era and even I rolled my eyes when this was announced but... I actually quite enjoyed the special last night. My cynicism levels were pretty high beforehand but it was fun. I know it's pandering but I liked how it felt like an event again.

Also fwiw I feel like this new-old incarnation is coming across as older and wearier, not just because Tennant has obviously aged. I also think I'm just glad they brought him back with Donna, all he ever needed really was a friend.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like the new haircut though.

I thought I'd never see the day when the backlash to Ten's overexposure would reach such heights! It's quite interesting, and also a reminder of how much time really has passed.

It's amazing how a decade and a half can at once feel so long, and also as though it went by in the blink of an eye. I am growing old.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t know, Grover Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th President of the US because his terms had another president between them (Benjamin Harrison) and that’s the way people tend to count things like that. I mean, isn't it the regeneration that they're counting, or do I have that wrong?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Chibnall and Moffat fans have spent a fucking decade whining about how persecuted they are, and then RTD comes back and they're right back to ceaseless RTD hate.

You have to laugh.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Odd how their "but the old episodes are still there if you don't like the new ones" attitude they used to beat older fans over the head with has gone right out the window the very second something they didn't like came on.

Hey, Moff/Chib fans, your old episodes are still there. Why doncha go watch them instead of whining all the time?

Yeah, I don't like it either. I've always liked that Doctor Who moves forward with new Doctors and showrunners so going back for anything other than a multi-Doctor story just feels wrong.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing that worries me the most is a quote I read that said this version of Tennant's Doctor would be more human. Which, IMHO, is the exact opposite of what they should be doing. The worst part of Ten was how human he was. At least for me, the Doctor works best when he's clearly at least a little alien.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I love that he's back but I feel you on the Fourteenth Doctor thing. Feels super weird. I'm still calling him Ten.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just surprised it took thirteen regenerations before they decided to bring back an old actor. I don't follow Doctor Who at all, it just vaguely seems like something that would've happened already.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
They did already do it. They had Tom Baker back at the end of the special, admittedly as just a cameo, to be a future Doctor "revisiting" some of his old faces.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
They've brought back Doctors in the past, but they're always playing "their" Doctor. So for instance, if Patrick Troughton came back for a special episode, he would be playing the Second Doctor. And there'd be some time-travel explanation for why the Second Doctor and the Third Doctor met up.

In this case, Tennant isn't playing the Tenth Doctor again - he's playing a different doctor. The Fourteenth Doctor. That's what everyone is freaking out about (at least putatively).

Asking for spoilers

Did they fix what they did to Donna?

Re: Asking for spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but for me personally it was like what the point of her 15-year memory lost, and why couldn't they do the same saving trick roght away?

Re: Asking for spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they did. And I can kinda see what other anon means but during the 15 years she had a subconscious awareness. And I don’t think they could have done it right away because

*specific spoilers*

the resolution was that her daughter took half. But I doubt that would have been possible until she matured to the point where we meet her because an infant/toddler/child brain couldn’t handle it. Instead, it was slowly fed to her mind throughout her life and then the Doctor activated Donna’s memories, the power splitting between Donna and her daughter.

The only thing I didn’t like about it was it being used as the reason for her daughter being non-binary; I feel like that pins a larger target on the chest of real NB people, particularly young people still in school. I hate “reasons” for identity and sexuality because the truth is that we are all just who we are, it isn’t “caused” by anything more than being born.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still just bitter that they announced Ncuti Gatwa as the next doctor and then went LOL JUST KIDDING it's David Tennant again. He deserves better than that, any excitement or discussion about it was immediately undercut because people only care about David Tennant, and now he's starting off with all of fandom aligned against him because he's the reason we can't just have David Tennant forever.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven’t seen anything in the fandom indicating that will happen. Bringing David back means people who checked out of the show are now willing to come back and give it another try. And RTD was already behind two great Doctors often considered two of the very best, which reassures skeptics that Fifteen will likely be great, too. I only know one fan who’s upset DT isn’t back forever and she’s honestly so screwed in the head and whines about literally everything, no one ever pays any attention to her.
