Holy. Fuck.
That movie, dear gods. :D

Maybe they all just trauma-erased it.

Re: The Nightmare Before Christmas.
This is me with Beetlejuice. I watched it for the fist time last year and omg... I didn't even think it was OK, I kind of hated it. Can't admit it to my friends, though...

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
well yeah, but if I'm using the filter to look for a particular pairing that isn't the popular pairing - only to get the popular pairing, then what is the point of filtering?

Re: Fanfiction tags

[personal profile] tabaqui 2023-12-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It does, but I (and others) always took that to mean 'thin schmear of 'story' as justification for ALL THE SEX', so...YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Unless the ship is at least getting their own side story/very relevant to the plot, then it shouldn't be there.
(although I definitely blame this habit on people who complained of seeing a pairing they don't like briefly and demanded the author tag to ridiculous lengths).

Ah, is Matrix Reloaded the one with the orgy sequence? I went to see that in the theater with my stepdad. Awkward times.

Ugh that used to play on Gold right after a few episodes of Last of the Summer Wine. I’d race into the lounge to switch it off so I wouldn’t have to listen. Easily one of the worst shows ever.

Yeah, that was kind of my issue: LotR wasn't a flawless adaptation but they worked great as the movies they were. The Hobbit was both a bad adaptation AND they weren't good movies.

Echoing those above me, but as a frequent rarepair enjoyer, respectfully, please reconsider doing this. The tag for the rarepair ends up flooded with fics that are actually about the popular pairing(s) where the rarepair gets a sentence or two at best and becomes impossible to filter unless I exclude all the other pairings, which I might not want to do!

Ehhhhhh they deserve it.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'll tag those characters and couples, but with a qualification in the tag: "implied," "mention of," "brief appearance of," etc. That way, I'm setting the appropriate expectation for focus/"screen time."

I’ve seen people say this movie isn’t porn and I’m still baffled.

I don't think she is self aware enough to play the role in fiction as she performed it IRL.

He was also very good in "Happy!" in my opinion.

as someone who reads some really good authors but is annoyed when they have a specific secondary pairing they love and i hate which they never fucking mention in their tags, a lot of this is about fandom expectation so you're never going to please everyone, but it's definitely more polite imo when you put "background xyz" instead of just "xyz"

that he was playing them at the same time for a few years is extremely funny

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Serious question: UNLESS these implications, mentions, and-or brief appearances have a significant impact on the story, why tag them at all? If writers feel it's important information readers need to know, they can put it in the summary or author's notes.

i've heard a few stray comments, especially in the last couple years because he was doing promo for the spin-off, that annoyed the shit out of me for how much they justified eliot's shittiness at a very interesting time for cop love lmao, but for now i'm chalking it up to promo, and enjoying his non l&o stuff

to be fair, there are way too many well respected historians out there who have some truly "hmmmmmmm, this seems more fictional than reasonable" documentaries out there of their pet theories. i think the last one i saw was the one about the princes in the tower where they speculated that richard released them by phillipa langley. some really good new evidence but also some "you have to know this makes zero sense" speculation. langley's no slouch, she helped find richard iii's bones, but also...giiiirrrrrrllll.

their pet theories read very phillipa gregory-ish, so I'm not surprised history docs take her seriously. she probably spends a lot of time with the whole tudor historians gang when she researches and those docs are trying to be entertaining too.

eta: i also think that frankly, a phd will give a lot of scholars confidence in you in a way most authors without even a masters will never have.

AYRT

Yup, it sure is. Along with a scene of a woman being given an orgasm via cake.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, because the filtering also goes in the opposite direction: there are people who don't want to see certain characters or pairings at all.

yeah bones had really good writing, even if i personally hate when shows do this sort of narrative function with left wing-ish thoughts and black people.

After years of my friends and partner raving about the Fallout games, I've spent the past week trying to get into Fallout 3 as a starting point. I'm a massive fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and everyone said "it's basically that but post-apocalyptic." Also I thought the TV trailer looked neat, so hey, why not get into the fandom?

I am so not having a good time. I'm really, really trying to like it, and I do really enjoy the whole lore/backstory, but in actual gameplay it just feels like it's fighting me every step of the way. Everything feels like a slog, I can appreciate the work that's gone into crafting a realistically "bombed out" world but I just don't feel motivated to actually explore any of it because it all looks like a big pile of garbage and that just doesn't excite me. I just keep running into little mechanics and snags that irritate me (I can't rest outside like in ES and have to shell out for a room, I get negative karma for stealing even though NOBODY WITNESSED ME STEALING)

Maybe it's time for me to accept that it's just not my bag, but I'm currently studying game dev and get bombarded with Fallout love and how well-made it is and I just don't get it.

I just feel really left out and like I'm missing something.
