Sympathetic villains

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-01-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Who are some of your favorite villains who you find sympathetic? Not necessarily that their actions are justified. Just that you find their backstory believable and you think they are sympathetic characters.

Would the winter soldier be considered a villain?

Does Hannibal count? He is a villain but he's also half the protagonist, so the show is already making you root for him even though he's TERRIBLE. He's a terrible person and yet so engaging to watch, and you do feel sorry for him sometimes, even though all of his problems are his own fault.

Azula is a completely horrible person, but "My own mother thought I was a monster... She was right of course, but it still hurt" always hits me really hard.

Derek Hale was supposed to be a villain but I just always felt bad for him. He deserved better.

Scorpius on Farscape. He was such a complete magnificent bastard but his motives were absolutely believable and his backstory appropriately horrible. Everything he did he firmly believed was the correct course of action for what he felt needed to be done to defeat the Scarrans. I also liked how even when he 'joined' the crew in the final season the show never sanded down his actions like some shows have (*cough* Spike from BtVS *cough*), he was still absolutely a villain.

For that matter Crais was an excellent sympathetic villain too. His arc is probably one of my favorites in a show full of strong character work.

I like moral dilemmas and ethics discussions... All villains are unsympathetic to me once I determine that they intentionally seriously hurmed others. I never read books with assassin protagonists. You get paid to kill? You don't deserve a happy end. Idk why this job is so popular in fantasy books.

Lots of them, really

Magneto
Erik Killmonger
Saruman to some extent
Does Gollum count as a villain? He must and I definitely feel sympathy for him
Villanelle
Harley Quinn
Cersei Lannister
Cytherea
Ianthe Tridentarius
Gabriel in Good Omens after S2
Beelzebub in Good Omens after S2
The Corinthian
Kylo Ren
The Master/Missy
Jamie Moriarty in Elementary

(it's one of my favorite character types so I'm always looking out for them)

Grima Fired Emblem.

Now hold on with me for a moment. I've been talking to some Japanese people and there's a lot of nuance missing from the English version that's hard to get across, but basically, you need to keep in mind his expanded backstory and that the overall story of Awakening is one of agency and lacking it, then the story of the worshiped god of death being worshiped as one of annihilation and whose followers don't even ask what he might want and instead force the matter, then he becomes kinda sympathetic. If the only choices you're offered are "do the thing or we'll force you" after being categorically abused and nearly killed at every turn for just existing, then I'd probably go, "Fuck it, level it all" too. Doesn't make what he does right, but one of his formative experiences is his own creator/father (Forneus) trying to kill him for... Violent thoughts. From an infant, basically. Then Alm and Celica showing up years later and trying to kill him for no real reason other than he was there. Like, Jesus, no wonder he turned out Like That.

Sephiroth - when we meet him in Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core he's quite likable ... until he loses his mind and becomes the villain, lol. Then what we know of his back story he had so much stacked against him remaining good/likable. He deserved better in life than Hojo's machinations. He's still a villain, though and I'm on team Cloud for ending him but I miss who he used to be/seem to be.

Mindless games

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-01-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you play or enjoy any random, mindless games. Not complex video games, but like tetris or something like that where you can just play without thinking?

I used to, but I found it kind of unhealthy for me. I tend to avoid "mindless" stuff because I can zone out for too long in an unhealthy way.

I do puzzles and build Lego but not very much because my mental health isn’t great right now. Mindless games and activities can be dangerous for me if my mind wanders onto the wrong thoughts or memories.

Straight up evil villains

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-01-03 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some of your favorite villains that are just straight up evil and aren't remotely sympathetic at all?

Re: Straight up evil villains

Alexander Pierce, from Captain America: The Winter Solider. He's basically the conservative politicians we have today, but smarter. Absolutely evil and terrifying. I love him as a villain.

The Governor from The Walking Dead was fantastic. By far the best villain they ever had on the show.

I also really loved Frieze from DBZ as a kid. He was such a fucker.

Series that remain strong throughout

Are there any series (book, movie, tv, game, whatever) that remain strong throughout and don't grow weaker later on?
