Honestly, kind of agree.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Same. If magic can't even fix such minor things then what's the point?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This is always an awkward thing in any story dealing with magic because like, forget eyesight - if everyone has Cure spells that can heal cancer or something, why does cancer still exist in the world?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Wakanda is hella racist, that is why.

Lasik isn't magical, it's just expensive.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It also involves shooting lasers in your eyeballs which I personally think is cool but lots of people are squeamish about lol

I figured it just showed that the magical world wasn't any better than the real one. They had the ability and the resources, but no one actually.

Maybe he swore off advanced medical magic after having to drink Skele-Gro.

Lasik? Do you want Harry to go blind?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I'm not messing with Lasik, ever, even though I don't enjoy wearing glasses.

If I get cataracts, I'll enjoy a new eyeball lens then.

You weren't "suspicious." You were annoyed over a small detail. That's ok. We all have our own pet peeves that are dealbreakers in fiction. Fandom needs to stop being so dramatic over why they don't like what they don't like.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sooo.....you're implying we should all be atheists, right?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, yes.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't necessarily follow, but yeah.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I kinda wonder whether Harry wearing glasses had an effect on the real world. I wouldn’t know for sure, but I feel like kids bullying each other for wearing glasses is a lot less of a thing than when I was a kid. That doesn’t make any difference to OP’s point, it’s just something I’ve thought about and was reminded of.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wonder myself. But I am not sure that HP is the only thing that affected that.
Also when I was in uni I've seen kids bullying another kid calling her Harry Potter because of glasses.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
harry having glasses is fine. he was a kid who was used to wearing glasses and didn't exactly have money for surgery. there were probably spells to improve vision but these are your eyes we're talking about - you really wouldn't want that spell to backfire or to be performed by someone you don't trust 100%.

also it seemed kind of like the wizard world lacked medical treatment? there were spells for healing and such but there were no dentists? i guess you could treat any ailment with a magical spell or plant or potion but i still think regular medical/dental exams work better at preventing that stuff.

this is kinda the thing about magical worlds. how heavily do you lean into the magic aspect? do the characters rely on it so much that they forgo logical steps like preventative medical care? do they not rely on it heavily enough and somehow not think to fix every little thing about themselves and everything around them until the world is perfect and no one needs to leave their bubble? i can see how that can be tricky for an author trying to strike a good balance.

MTE I think wizards would prefer a muggle do the surgery/treatment than use a spell that can backfire worse than in the muggle world.

there were plenty of other things imo

i don't think a story with mundane magic, something that might have well have been an essential feature of a whole genre of uk fantasy i read as a kid, is enough to be suspicious of anything.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've been wearing glasses for 21 years, since my early teens, and this past year's checkup was the first time I hadn't had at least a tiny fluctuation in my prescription every two years or so. With something that changeable I think any major intervention seems risky.

Also JKR wore glasses as a kid and was annoyed the hero never had them in stories. I like that they never put any on Hermione.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-20 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
JKR had Harry wear the glasses and not Hermione, and still swears blind he isn't secretly a transmasc.

It seemed to me that the many of the wizards in that world both lacked common sense and were lazy, which is not a good combination for innovation. But my headcanon is something to do with the eyes themselves (given Mad-Eye Moody, maybe they can't regrow eyes if you make a mistake), seeing as how James did seem to have money but still had glasses and Dumbledore had a lot of power and also had glasses. Trelawny had those Coke-bottle glasses, so maybe it has to do with a different kind of vision that somehow magically ties into eyes.
