Do you go to conventions? Have you been to any recently or are planning to go to one any time soon? Or if you haven't been to one, which one would you love to go to if there were no barriers to you going?

Nah, I'm not as fond of being potentially molested in a dark hallway as I once was. I swear that some con attendees are more determined to misbehave in this era of conduct codes than they were before. It really sucks. I went to cons when I was younger, and filk singing was all the rage, but these days? I'm too old, and they are just not fun anymore.

Ignore them, pretty sure it's the same insufferable tedious wannabe contrarian in all the GC threads.

I have noticed a rash of insufferable comments today, you are probably right its the same miserable person.

Lots of assault at cons, especially the bigger ones. I remember when the internet had a meltdown because a woman was accosted in an elevator, managed to get out, reported the guy only to be told he was just being awkward trying to flirt. She went on the internet and basically said "Guys, don't do that" and they went AFTER her for DARING to tell men how to approach women.

Gonna have to request some actual sources on this because I've been going to multiple cons with 15k+ attendance per year for more than 20 years and I can count on two hands the number of times I've heard about things like that happening and it's always been a big deal when it does.

I'm going to the London MCM this weekend ^u^ I've been going there for years and hoping to get my 6th Doctor cosplay finished before then.

Just take some flashbangs with you, they have the same effect on the sense as that coat.

Tell me you know nothing about Classic Who without telling me you know nothing about Classic Who.

The Sixth Doctor's eye searing coat is a running gag in the fandom, it is pretty traditional Who fandom to compare it to things like that. Maybe you should try not to be so insufferable today.

I used to! I went to SDCC and PAX East a few times, and tried and checkout any of the smaller local cons. But now I am a boring Old and don't have the disposable income or time off that my younger self did. If I had money and a free schedule I absolutley would still go to all the cons I could.

I did volunteer at a con locally for a couple of years but then COVID happened and I never really got back into it.

I've been thinking of volunteering for a nearby con, but I have never had a whole weekend free at the same time as a convention. But I'd like to do it at least once before my health completely craps out.

If it helps, the con I volunteered at didnt need you to commit to the whole thing. They preferred it, but if you only had one day they'd take it.

Going to Anthrocon in July!

I have, everything from the Beatles to Trek to My Little Pony. Had a great time at all of them.

I've been to Dragoncon 3 times. I'd like to go again sometime I think. It was fun, if a bit overwhelming. I went with dad, though. It will be a very different experience going alone.

Oh, I've also been to a few others. I went to a Doctor Who one here in Texas, a Harry Potter one in England right when book 7 came out, and San Antonio general one.

So yes, cons are fun. Can't afford at moment, but I'd like to go again sometime. Not Comiccon, though. That's just too big for me.

Yep, because cosplay. It's been hard post-pandemic to get back into the habit, I really wanted to do 3-4 this year but so far we've only got passes to DragonCon. Which, go big or go home yeah but...I feel out of practice and wanted to do something smaller first. Our schedule for the summer won't allow it. Guess we're just going to dive feet-first into DragonCon after not going to any cons since 2022, oops?

I just went to a local anime convention back in the fall! And the year before I went to my first major Comic Con. I've only attended one other small local con in the interim. They were fun! There's one more con I hope to attend this summer, and with that I think I'll be good. SDCC seems like it would be way too overwhelming for me, and anytime I go to these things, I spend money T.T

When I'm outside of the US, I go to anime-themed cons sometimes. Especially in South America. The pricing sucks a lot less and the cosplayers and singers put their heart into it in a way that makes me feel very fond of everyone I meet, practically. I don't go when I'm stateside because I've never wanted to. What I've heard about them from people who do go made them seem like soulless gimmicks for herding people in the direction of merchandise. And on top of that, being around large crowds wears me out.

The one thing about cons that I wish I could interact with, from the comfort of my computer, is the vidding scene. I'd love to see what people are showing off ... maybe a couple of months after they present it. But if it's put up anywhere online, I don't know where to find that. There's the Dreamwidth comm for vidding and - ?
