What is your...

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...favorite National Park, American or otherwise? Tell us below.

Re: What is your...

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Gates of the Arctic. I always knew Alaska billed itself as the Last Frontier, but it wasn't until I hiked GotA just before the pandemic that I understood why. It was breathtaking, and I don't think I saw a single soul who wasn't part of our group who wasn't the pilot taking us in and out of there. It was awe inspiring. And I saw at least three different Grizzly Bears, none of which seemed that interested in, or frightened of, us. It was fun. Might also have seen a wolverine, not sure. Gonna count it anyway.

Seriously, if you get the chance then go. If you don't get the chance, then make the chance.

Next on my list of the impossible is Samoa though. That is gonna be a tough get to.

It's weird that this question is framed as "America and all those other countries too, I guess". Especially since the first national park was in Mongolia.

Of the ones I've actually been to (not many), Plitvice Lakes, Croatia. Absolutely breathtaking.

The ones I'd most love to visit: Tongariro, New Zealand both as a LOTR fan and volcano fan, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and Ogasawara in Japan because again volcanoes.

I always really liked Canyon De Chelly. It was pretty close to where I lived growing up. The Grand Canyon is awesome in its vastness and beauty, but Canyon De Chelly was pretty and nice (and much more manageable with enthusiastic and impulsive kids).

Conventions?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you go to conventions? Have you been to any recently or are planning to go to one any time soon? Or if you haven't been to one, which one would you love to go to if there were no barriers to you going?

Re: Conventions?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'm not as fond of being potentially molested in a dark hallway as I once was. I swear that some con attendees are more determined to misbehave in this era of conduct codes than they were before. It really sucks. I went to cons when I was younger, and filk singing was all the rage, but these days? I'm too old, and they are just not fun anymore.

I used to! I went to SDCC and PAX East a few times, and tried and checkout any of the smaller local cons. But now I am a boring Old and don't have the disposable income or time off that my younger self did. If I had money and a free schedule I absolutley would still go to all the cons I could.

I did volunteer at a con locally for a couple of years but then COVID happened and I never really got back into it.

I've been to Dragoncon 3 times. I'd like to go again sometime I think. It was fun, if a bit overwhelming. I went with dad, though. It will be a very different experience going alone.

Oh, I've also been to a few others. I went to a Doctor Who one here in Texas, a Harry Potter one in England right when book 7 came out, and San Antonio general one.

So yes, cons are fun. Can't afford at moment, but I'd like to go again sometime. Not Comiccon, though. That's just too big for me.

Re: Conventions?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, because cosplay. It's been hard post-pandemic to get back into the habit, I really wanted to do 3-4 this year but so far we've only got passes to DragonCon. Which, go big or go home yeah but...I feel out of practice and wanted to do something smaller first. Our schedule for the summer won't allow it. Guess we're just going to dive feet-first into DragonCon after not going to any cons since 2022, oops?

Re: Conventions?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-21 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I just went to a local anime convention back in the fall! And the year before I went to my first major Comic Con. I've only attended one other small local con in the interim. They were fun! There's one more con I hope to attend this summer, and with that I think I'll be good. SDCC seems like it would be way too overwhelming for me, and anytime I go to these things, I spend money T.T

Re: Conventions?

When I'm outside of the US, I go to anime-themed cons sometimes. Especially in South America. The pricing sucks a lot less and the cosplayers and singers put their heart into it in a way that makes me feel very fond of everyone I meet, practically. I don't go when I'm stateside because I've never wanted to. What I've heard about them from people who do go made them seem like soulless gimmicks for herding people in the direction of merchandise. And on top of that, being around large crowds wears me out.

The one thing about cons that I wish I could interact with, from the comfort of my computer, is the vidding scene. I'd love to see what people are showing off ... maybe a couple of months after they present it. But if it's put up anywhere online, I don't know where to find that. There's the Dreamwidth comm for vidding and - ?

Inspired by secret #6 - what is your comfort media?

Mine used to be reading fic, but I've been without a fandom now and it just doesn't hit right reading random fic. I need that character connection for it to work I guess.

Do I need to have seen Fury Road to understand Furiosa? I have read the plot and know the lore, but never actually seen the movie. Honestly I really only want to watch to see Hemsworth as a villain.

Generational differences when it comes to how you feel about politics?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It feels like my parents' generation (boomers) has this idea that "politics" is somehow completely separate from who a person is. That you can think gay and trans people shouldn't have rights, that immigrants are destroying the country, that black people should "just comply with cops" and they wouldn't get shot, that rape victims shouldn't be able to get abortions because it goes against some people's religious beliefs, and those things are just "politics" and you can believe them and still be a good person if you're "nice" to people you know personally. I was having an argument with my dad about Trump supporters and he claims I shouldn't be upset about their "politics" because they're still good people and having those beliefs does not make someone a bad person. To me, someone's "politics" says a lot about their character, and believing that trans people don't have the right to exist, gay people shouldn't have the same rights as straight people, and a woman should be forced to carry her rapist's baby absolutely make you a bad person.

I don't know if it's a generational thing because most people I know in my generation (millennials) feel the way I do (that your "politics" say a lot about what type of person you are), or if it's because he has the privilege of being a straight white male (I'm a queer woman), or if he's just more conservative than I'd realized, or what, but it's really fucking frustrating and annoying.

Grief (TW: Animal Death)

(Anonymous) 2024-05-21 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I messaged on here the other week about my 16 year old girlie who was having to be syringe-fed and was a huge baby doll about it. She passed away this morning in her sleep after battling cancer and kidney failure for three weeks. It was fast but I knew she was going last night and wouldn't make it. I kissed her and held her and said my goodbyes.

It's never enough time. Sixteen years was not enough time for me. I don't know how to be without her after all this time and I'm just lost. I've been crying all day and I had an appointment with my therapist today. My mom wants me to jump into getting a new cat as soon as possible since my emotional state is/was often linked to my affection with my girl.

She was my whole world and it's much darker now without her in it.
