I just can’t get invested enough in the quality and artistic value of Star Wars to care if it was ruined. You sit down to watch a Star Wars movie, and you’re getting something fundamentally stupid.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Change that to "fundamentally fun" and I am with you. They are not great art or storytelling masterpieces and people need to stop expecting them to be.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? They're all bad, the movies, the shows, there's nothing of actual quality in any of them and watching people fighting over which ones are 'worse' or 'better' is absurd when they're all exactly as mediocre as each other.

Wrong. Almost not even wrong because what does "it broke its own setting" even fucking mean.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-09 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
"The filmmakers broke their own setting for not giving me exactly what I wanted when 'The Force Awakens' ended. Worst film ever for not being exactly what I wanted."

I liked it.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that big a deal. It was fun, the end.

Re: I liked it.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you had fun. Most people didn't. It flopped so badly that the people in charge overcorrected badly in their attempts to pretend it never happened and unleashed the horrors of "somehow, Palpatine returned" on us instead.

Imo it was the best movie in the sequel trilogy. It wasn't great, but at least it was interesting. TFA was boring af and RoS was a complete mess. There's plenty that doesn't work about TLJ, but at least it had a unique story direction and some really striking and fun scenes (esp the battle scenes, which were the best in the ST). Honestly, most of the problems I personally have with it were at least started by J.J. Abrams and his bullshit mystery boxes that he didn't even have answers for.

(I fucking hate the Abrams mystery box thing so much.)

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Which battle scenes? Because some were good, but the fight scene with the red guard dudes was atrociously choreographed.
Basically, I think the movie had a few good parts and several very bad parts. And it's a matter of opinion whether the bad parts were too much for someone to like it or the good parts enough for someone to enjoy it.

Yeah exactly this. TLJ brought something new to the table, which was sorely needed. It had the best direction in the trilogy, too, coming from someone who studied cinematography. It's sad that Abrams being a brat made RoS make so little sense as a follow up, I think that hindsight really hurt for people who already weren't crazy about TLJ.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-09 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
💯
Also, I am glad that people saw how flimsy the armor is for JJ Abrams' "mystery box" style of storytelling when TRoS came out.

There are some great things JJ Abrams has done but I think he got a bit too cocky when "Lost" became a huge thing and he was all "see? The mystery doesn't need to be solved!" and lost sight of the fact that he didn't have the answers to the questions he created via the pilot episode, but it was off the talents of Damon Lindelof and Calton Cuse that they carried out an amazing show where they did know the answers to the mysteries.
And even then, the whole mystery box approach did hurt the show somewhat because a lot of fans had an expectation to have all their questions answered.
When in reality, the showrunners only answered the questions that helped the storytelling/characters. (Not to say I didn't have issues with the show because I did, but I think the payoff in Lost is less shitty because JJ Abrams was only involved with the beginning of the show)

Like there needs to be a purpose to the mystery box and JJ Abrams is more "there should be a mystery box, but don't worry if there is no reason for it other than it draws in curiosity".

I absolutely hated this movie but saying it's objectively bad is just as silly as saying it's objectively good. While I personally believe the bad parts far outweigh the good, and there definitely are some objectively really fucking dumb things in it, it comes down to personal taste and what you enjoy/don't enjoy.
For me, it's not just the plot/plot developments on their own that make me dislike it but especially the director's attitude which was very, very noticeable throughout. But if you enjoy that kind of attitude, I guess it might have been enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
For someone who did not notice way you thought was very very noticeable, what do you mean by "the director's attitude" showing in the movie?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-09 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
You call that a secret?

I loved everything about The Last Jedi except Rey. I hated her. She reminded me of Korra's whiny, snotty, pushy ass. And it's lonely how much I hate her in TLJ because I don't hate her for the same reasons anyone else hates her.

I wish she were just an overpowered Mary Sue in the movie. I loved it when she rescued everybody at the end. I wanted her to do more of that cool shit instead of being a little snot at Luke. At least when she was being Jedi Jesus, she wasn't breaking and stealing people's shit and was actually helpful.

I enjoyed the casino planet scenes more than any scene with Rey before she left Luke's planet.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-09 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this even a secret? TLJ is a divisive film and for quite a while now (especially once the sequel trilogies ended) the hate for TLJ is way more prominent than any love or appreciation for it.

IMO this is actually one of the best Star Wars films that really gets what it means to find purpose and to fight for what you believe in.
And it's really sad that this film is treated like it's the worst thing ever because it didn't live up to their expectations/desires/dreams/wants/wish fulfillment.

I would have more to say if there were anything I liked about this movie, or cared to re-live from it. But there isn't. So, just know I agree completely, anon.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-09 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
TLJ was my favorite Star Wars movie of the core franchise. It had its flaws, and it's not like it was a work of staggering genius or anything, but I had a lot of fun watching it and have happily rewatched it a couple of times since.

As far as I'm concerned, the best thing to come out of the sequel trilogy was the Emo Kylo Ren Twitter account. Fandom is amazing.

like i appreciate them for trying something different and the actors didn't deserve the abuse heaped on them but holy shit that movie was BAD. two thirds of it didn't even matter and so much time was wasted on them i'm -
