I'm tired of "ACAB". This doesn't add anything to the important conversation. Furthermore, it's more likely to make cops defensive and not get to the crux of the issue- which is the systematic racism that permeates the culture.

For example, as a feminist, if I just went around saying 'all men are bastards" that isn't going to change anything. Some are bastards, some genuinely want to make a change but are trapped in an overall toxic culture, and everything in between. Saying ACAB is such a vast oversimplification of a real issue that definitely needs to have vast changes.

I loved John Oliver's take on the Law and Order series. I still love and watch it, but am able to separate the fantasy from reality. Rewatching Elliot now... yeah, not good at all. Olivia Benson however remains awesome. From what I gather, SVU is complete fantasy in regards to what happens with SA victims. But it's a welcome fantasy, to see rapists get imprisoned.

I mean I'm not someone who thinks ACAB applies to fictional cops, but L&O really goes very, very far in the direction of shitty propagandistic cop media.

Cop and cop theater I see as two different things. Cops? Be careful in real life. Actually watching the real cops shows just makes me feel bad for the people getting pulled over or whatever.

Cop theater is different. With real cops you know that they're not going to treat you like Jake from B99. It's a show for entertainment. Law and Order is the same. It's about good guys trying to catch bad guys. It just so happens that the good guys in this case are cops because that makes for an easy setting that people can generally follow without much exposition. That can absolutely be entertaining. The best part is you get to know these characters in said character-driven stories. (Because, again, the cop part is dressing.)

The only problem is when people mix fiction and real life. As long as you don't do that, and I don't think you are, everything is fine. I don't see a reason for guilt or shame in this. People are allowed to like what they like.

L&O is especially indicative of that. Any cop drama that can't or won't admit its cops are, at best, shady, if not outright corrupt, when they get up in their feelings is automatically trash. Not Blue Bloods levels of trash, but L&O cops must find their way to the nearest bin immediately.

The chapter itself was fine, but I think the fact that it was a weekly series really hurt for the final few arcs. It makes so much more sense when you're reading it in close succession, rather than at bare minimum a week in between each bite-sized chapter.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why is that an issue? I mean, for me, accuracy in the background details of historical fiction is nice and sometimes makes the story richer, but it's not strictly necessary to my enjoyment if I like the story (and sometimes it can bog the story down in too much information). If it's meant to be a historical account, that's one thing, but if it's just a story set in ye olden times, how credible does it need to be?
