or have a snack, maybe you're just hungry!

+1

At its best, it's very well made pulp fiction. I, personally, have a deep and abiding love for pulp fiction. Therefore, I like James Bond. Not complicated.

Exactly. I'm not looking for high art here, just stupid spy stuff and action sequences.

The want is there, but no chemistry

What have you always thought sounded fun or interesting and tried watching/reading/etc but just couldn't seem to get into?

For me its Discworld. It seems so fun! But unfortunately I just don't vibe with Pratchett's writing :(

same, it was very beloved in its time and I just couldn't get into it. and, much as I want to blame the puppets for being too immersion-breaking, it was more that the worldbuild was shaky and so was some of the acting. it took way too long to find its footing wrt characterization and storyline.

Jupiter Ascending. And the problem literally was lack of chemistry - I've liked Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum in other things but they were awful together.

Read a romance novel, you get what you expect. Read a Tom Clancy novel, you get what you expect. Watch a Bond movie... watch a shounen anime...

Do all these have problematic aspects? Sure. They're known and part of the genre they're in though. I'd settle for people being aware of that vs. eliminating them entirely.

I swear I look over my fic like 5million times with a fine tooth-comb and STILL when I reread it a couple of days later after publication I find an annoying typo somewhere :( So for me it's very much unintended but I feel better if someone thinks it's a game!

wasn't the guy who directed this accused of messing with an underage kid or something?

I hate when on paper I am into a pairing but then you see them in action and the chemistry just isn't there.

I can't get over my nostalgia with the Bond films because it's one of many things where I'd watch them with my dad (usually on a weekend afternoon, though obviously the Dalton films didn't feature there.) I know they're not great when it comes to certain themes but yeah... action films (along with science fiction/fantasy films and various sports) are how I spent time away from my mum and sister with my dad.

I wasn't keen on the books though when I finally attempted those.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about people commenting politely to let you know about a typo?

I've tried watching Wakanda Forever many times, but I've never gotten more than half an hour in before being distracted by something else. It just doesn't hold my interest.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It was just the outfits and maybe two lines.

I'll probably feel embarrassed (because I'm just awkward like that) but as long as the comment isn't rude and is more like "FYI I got your meaning but I think this is a typo" then I'm relieved. YMMV of course!

I can't get past the prank call opening on Star Wars The Last Jedi. I dunno what the rest of the movie is like because that opening is just so fucking dumb I cannot move past it.

I don't really have any attachment to the properties they were referencing so it didn't actually bother me all that much. I can see what you're saying though.

This is still the most I've enjoyed anything MCU for quite some time though.

I adore Scorpius and Farscape in general! Good taste, OP.

Fantasy unfortunately. I enjoy movies and shows well enough but cannot get into fantasy literature. I tried GoT three different ways, never felt the urge to read Harry Potter, and while I enjoyed the first Rivers of London, never felt the need to read the rest.

I've tried multiple times to get into Stardew Valley and just get bored. Same with Pokemon games. I cannot stand how you have to fight everyone.

as an old fart I always wanted to try D&D but y'know, satanic panic forbids it, so now I'm old enough and have gamer friends and...yeah, just couldn't see what the hype was about. I could not for the life of me enjoy it.

I could not for the life of me figure out what you were referring to so I had to do a search. Took me a minute but I found it. It obviously left a much bigger impact on you than it did me XD

I have always wanted to try it but I secretly feel/fear that I would end up the same way, just nit really getting it

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt - yeah I personally like it because I get more embarrassed thinking it is left out there for more to see (weird anxiety thing) but I have seen so many people say they get upset by it so I never comment when I see typos/errors.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I slogged through first season because a friend assured me it was excellent. Then I returned the DVDs to her (after about 6 months, it took me that long to get through.) I think there are certain points at which it clicks for some people, but it never clicked for me. Didn't like the John whump, for a start.

If it's literally "heads up: there's a typo in chapter 5, breathe should be breath" I'm pretty sure most authors would be like "oh thanks" and fix it.

If anyone is like super offended by that the problem definitely isn't you.
