Doesn't challenge the status quo, eh? It's almost as if that book series started off as something written for kids by a mid author who got lucky and can barely plot her way out of YA fantasy, never mind tackle burning social issues with sensitivity and intelligence...

Looking like you're going to challenge the status quo, then never meaningfully challenging it, is really common in fantasy. My Hero Academia is another typical example of the type.

I'm still learning about actions that can lead to actual change, etc.
And yeah, looking at HP now, it's not so much rebelling against an unjust system to revolutionary change, and more reforming an unjust system so the former staus quo can slip back into place.

There are certain themes, quotes by certain characters that I still find were good points that have helped shaped my understanding of the world, but I do struggle with "enjoying" HP.
I try my best not to rain on anyone's enjoyment of HP, but I try my best not to talk about it or anything related to it if I can help it.

This pretty much. Given it was common practice back in the time her movie took place I can guarantee whoever ended up with her would have had to force it. The fact that they even changed the old men being the suitors to them having sons her age makes it squirmy.

(I am a Merida stan I will die on the hill that she was well within her rights to protest the marriage. But the time frame of the movie...)

A little break from the US 2024 election and all its... weirdness? Fuckery? Anyway...

While I'm not Canadian, this video showed up in my algorithm. As you might have guessed, it breaks down Canadian politics - starting with the three levels of the Canadian government, and the duties each level is responsible for. The lady also explains that a good number of Canadians are clueless about how their government works, and who to hold accountable when something goes wrong (and yes, the parallels to the US are NOT lost on me here). The voting process is also covered.

While pointing out the low voter turnout (another frightening parallel), she encourages people to "be an active citizen." And while not a new term, honestly, I like it a lot and think people need to use it more.
