I'm not advocating for violence, but it's kind of fun to watch corporate CEOs fear for their lives.

Meanwhile, as much as I loath the insurance system in this country, the nasty comments people are making towards the family of the United ceo who was murdered is making me really uncomfortable.

AYRT - yeah, that's crossing a line, for sure.

And yet I'm sure they'll be fine with the millions of dollars they'll be receiving from his death, unlike thousand of other people who were burdened with the loss of a loved one AND additional crippling debt from the policies he put into place without a single thought about their comfort.

My mom wondered at the boilerplate nature of the wife's comments about her husband. They were scarcely different from the company's.

As for the kids (who may in fact be young adults-- guy was 50 and he might not have had them *that* late in life) I simply pity them for their pre-existing condition (sharing 50% of their DNA with him).

They'll be financially fine, yes.

I still hope they're staying off the internet or at least from the news for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, it's one thing to not mourn the man, or even say nasty things about him, but leave the kids and wife out of it. Not cool.

And frankly, I'm not going to judge the collective catharsis of folks who have been badly and repeatedly screwed by a system that takes their money but finds all reasons to not give them what their dollar paid for. When the system isn't charging the patient impossible sums in the first place, that is.

There certainly is a problem here. The reactions to the man's death are just the symptom of that problem. And comments like yours just tell me some folks in the world would rather bury their heads in the sand than acknowledge that there are unfair systems in place that need to be changed.

I'll take a temporary lack of civility over a society that uses politeness as an excuse to not fix its ugliness toward its own people.

People need to remember that whatever their financial situation was, he was their father. Yes, at face value, they're rich and they're not going to be homeless because of it. But they did lose a parent. Regardless of how much money you have or don't have, that's still deeply tragic. It's why I'm not comfortable practically celebrating the CEO's death. I hate the way insurance works in this country. I call it Unsurance. (Original, I know. /S) But people lost someone they love.

I'll advocate for violence, if it's against corporate CEOs.

I'm certainly not hoping and praying the gunman's caught.

What gunman? His body just did that. I think it was a pre-existing condition which is why he couldn't get it fixed.

I hope they never catch him and it keeps health care CEOs in particular the same stress and worry that their clients who can't get authorized treatment endure.

American problems need American solutions

As someone not from the US, can someone give a short summary why this guy was so hated?

He was in an industry that denies healthcare to millions, and takes join in bankrupting them whilst still keeping their money upfront. People died, literally, because of the every day decisions he took.

On top of that, even if you conceded that the job of denying healthcare (in the US it's a for-profit industry) was a necessary evil, his company had the highest denial rate of all the ones that were out there (twice industry average)-- and oh, they were starting to farm the job out to AIs... and we know how wise and reliable THOSE are.

There was also the insider trading which was going to be investigated by Congress and the loss of a significant amount of the company's money to ransomware. How much of a factor those might have been in a motivation remains to be seen.

How do you that he personally took joy?

United Healthcare made billions of dollars in profit mostly due to denying health insurance coverage to millions of people they cover.
We give money to insurance providers so that when we need to go to the doctor, etc, it's paid for. But this CEO was like, "How about we just tell about 30% of the people who give us money that we're not going to pay for their bills? Congratulations shareholders! We've saved the company billions of dollars, so let's give ourselves raises and giant bonuses."

This is rampant in so many big businesses, but it feels especially shitty with health insurance because that money is literally supposed to be to pay for medical costs, not line the pockets of the people who work at the company.
Millions of Americans are in pain/dying and/or have huge money issues due to the folks at these companies finding ways to keep that money to themselves.

Like...I do understand that a life lost is tragic due to the people in said person's life being affected by losing someone you love/care about, but at the same time, the person no longer with us (and their family and peers) did (do) not even think about the millions of people who suffer and die from choosing profit over human lives.

How can we feel for rich people's tears and fears when they give zero fucks about the people who they get all that money from.

Literally money from insured people under United Healthcare went to the rich, not the medical costs that money is intended for.
Victims of robbery (and their loved ones) not sad to hear their robber was killed is not surprising.

You know, I'm remembering right now having read an article a few years ago about how a elderly man called the police to inform them that he and his wife were about to commit murder suicide because they could not afford their medical bills anymore.
An elderly couple committed murder suicide because they were in huge debt and in massive pain they could not afford to have treated.

And there are so many more tragic stories about how lives were ruined because of health insurance companies choosing the bottom line over human lives they took on the job to "take care of".
And these scared and worried rich folks probably didn't care and probably still do not care the cost of their lofty/comfortable lifestyles.
