This. So. Much.

Along with that, the way that girls define the word "feminist" these days is ridiculous.
I will not free bleed on my sheets and clothes, I will not judge those women who wish to stay at home and be mothers, and I will not say that little girls are being targeted by sexist books like Twilight, and I will not argue that a Muslim woman is being oppressed in the US because she chooses to wear her headscarf.
I also will not support lowering the standards for such jobs as firefighting for women(If you can't carry my ass out of a fucking burning building, you should not be a firefighter. Man or woman. Sorry.).

Feminism: belief in the equitable treatment of people regardless of sex or gender.

That's the core concept. There may be disagreements about its application, but that's the unifying theme.

[identity profile] muffinman-owns.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I realize what the definition is, but many women today have taken it to ridiculous levels to shove it in peoples' faces at every chance they get to remind them that "I AM A WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR".

If feminism is about being equal, why is the word partial to women? I've always wondered that. If there is to be such a thing as equal (Which there isn't, still), why is there not a word depicting that?

[identity profile] skelody.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There is. Egalitarianism, sometimes modified with other adjectives.

It's called feminism because women started out in the position of being treated as inferior, and the initial impetus of the movement was to procure rights for women (men already had such rights).

[identity profile] muffinman-owns.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I would be all for using only egalitarianism. Women in most countries (minus the ones with religious and governmental interventions) are hardly without rights, and some of the issues argued about are ridiculous (IE: The firefighter thing). There are rarely any issues these days argued about by feminazis that cannot be answered logically.

I am all for making sure women keep the rights they have, but I've seen some outrageous claims made by hardcore feminists (There are whole communities on LJ and other forums dedicated to bashing men and whining about oppression that doesn't effect them or anyone they know).

You said "feminazi"

You lose.

God-damn do you lose.

what's wrong with that term when it's applied correctly?

Just because they have rights does not mean they have equal rights, nor does it mean they are treated equally even if they have those rights.

[identity profile] skelody.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
When in doubt, go back to the core definition. If one is misandristic, one is not a feminist. On the other hand, it is dangerous to dismiss observations of nonobvious injustice as "whining". Such injustices' very invisibility is part of their insidiousness, and it's always worth keeping in mind that social mores -- unlike legal ones -- are ingrained into our minds at a level often beyond questioning.

[personal profile] amaresu 2009-09-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because believing in equal rights is exactly the same as invading Poland and setting out to exterminate an entire race. Clearly.

Why the hell don't I have that lovely icon?

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, the term is usually only used to refer to crazy extremists that hate on men (I think).

Though as an anon in this thread mentioned, it's still rather offensive, for different reasons.

... er, not so much different as... >.< okay I think you probably understand what I mean.

Are you totally deluded or just after an argument? Can't you see that the world is weighted AGAINST women and that we still need to fight for our rights? Maybe you should try waking up to the world you live in. Also, a dictionary will provide you with the word 'equality,' just so you know.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... well, far be it from me to speak for muffinman, but. I really don't think he/she's trying to claim that the basic idea of feminism (equal rights, etc) is bad.

It's more like, how about, instead of focussing on wanting every woman to act like what we think ideal women should act like, we focus on making sure that every woman can choose who and what she wants to be. Focus on treating men and women the same and not on trying to set one or the other on some high pedestal of awesomeness. You know...?

Yeah, I've heard them. One woman on a forum I was on awhile back argued that they should lower the standards for being a firefighter so that more women could do it.
And clearly she doesn't realize that there ARE women firefighters, so it's not that the standards are high, it's that she's not cut out to meet them.

[identity profile] muffinman-owns.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I am truly not looking for an argument, my original post was more of a rant than an open message.

I don't know many rights I don't have that I really need, to be honest. If there's one right that I still maintain fighting for it's the equal wages. However, all the jargon about lowering the standards so that I can be a firefighter, police officer, professional athlete (Which is stupid because women pro athletes are total beasts at what they do and don't need standards lowered at ALL), or most any other job, is pointless to me.
The "man" is not telling you you cannot do these jobs because you're a woman. He's telling you you can't do them because you don't meet the standards.

That's really just one section of the spectrum having to do with the subject of feminism, and the one that really strikes me as awry.

Like I said, some countries have religious and governmental intervention preventing them from having such rights that other countries have. That is a whole other issue that cannot be solved by women screaming and hollering like the officials in those countries actually give a flying fuck.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
However, all the jargon about lowering the standards so that I can be a firefighter, police officer, professional athlete

Do people actually advocate that? o.0 I've never heard of that... that is just kind of strange, to be honest. Why would anyone even want it? It sounds more condescending than anything else --- like saying "let's make it easier for the poor little weak women".

EDIT: Oh I keep failing. *sees your response*

Okay, yeah, that is just weird. I could understand if it was something like the people in charge of the practical exams or something either subconsciously or consciously marking a woman down as weaker or something when she's performed just as well as a guy, but trying to say that the standards that they are marked against should be changed to be easier? That's just bizarre.

Feminism means a lot of things. It's about acknowledging that things are still not equal between the sexes, even in the US and other relatively free countries. Lowering the standards for something like firefighting isn't feminist, so I have no idea how you got that idea. I'm a feminist, but I believe men can be feminists too. It's about recognizing that there are systems of oppression in place even in places like the US, and trying to make things better for a group of people who have typically been downtrodden by society. I'm sorry you've acquired a negative view of feminism, but it really is something that every egalitarian-minded person should support. But it also means recognizing that women still have obstacles we have to face. And it's terribly naive to believe that women are completely equal and have nothing left to fight for.

[identity profile] muffinman-owns.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Lowering the standards for something like firefighting isn't feminist, so I have no idea how you got that idea.

Because it's about getting women into a job field that's mostly dominated by men and was said by someone who claims to be a feminist. That is where the idea is from. Doesn't matter if it's actually feminist or not, point being that it was said by a self-proclaimed feminist. I'm well aware men can be feminists too, and many men I know are involved.

And it's terribly naive to believe that women are completely equal and have nothing left to fight for.
I'm not suggesting we're completely equal.
I'm suggesting that we are not as oppressed as some believe we are. But whatever. People can fight hard for whatever they want.

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you so hard on this one.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
God, this. (And I don't think your use of "feminazi" was misplaced, but hey, that's me.)
