Fictional Mentors

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-03-10 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
who are your favorite fictional mentors or teachers?

Re: Fictional Mentors

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but I still enjoyed Maggie Smith's Minerva McGonagall.

I love a good mentor. One of my favorite character types. Some of my favorites are Obi-Wan, Iroh, Giles, Bra'tac, Gandalf,

I also think the Doctor serves this role for some of his companions, and I like that dynamic. And I liked seeing Luke and Leia become that sort of character in the sequels.

I also like an evil mentor type of figure who is doing this with ulterior motives. Sauron with Celebrimbor and Ar-Pharazon is this and a whole lot of fun.

Reigen from Mob Psycho 100. He mentors kids, adults, and his enemies.

Giles. Always and forever Giles.

Not always the perfect mentor, but Rupert Giles from Buffy is a great character. Trying to mentor and supervise teens who really don’t want to listen to him and having to just roll his eyes and sigh when they continue to do stupid things.

*** Spoilers for S1 of Person of Interest ***

“Charlie Burton” comes to mind. Guy was such a good English teacher one of his students instantly stood up to armed mobsters to protect him. (And he managed that while having a completely separate organized crime agenda running in the background.)

I wish Genie from Disney was real. He's my comfort character. Favorite mentor from animation, for sure.

Rosethorn from the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce. Actually, all the mentors from those books.

And Raoul from the Tortall books, to Kel. And Kel, because her story is basically that of the upbringing of a future mentor to many.

Splinter from TMNT, especially the 80s show, the 2004 one and the 2012 one. Rise was disappointing in that regard but I've heard he gets better later on, I haven't managed to finish it yet.

Favorite Story Arcs

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-03-10 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What characters do you think had the best overall arc to their story? Arcs that were interesting and believable and gave us a character who was totally different at the end than they were in the start.

The go-to character for me is G'Kar from Babylon 5. He's such a different character by the end, but the show takes you on the journey and makes it totally believable and so fun to watch.

Apparently Zuko is the best example of this. Sadly, I couldn't get pass the first couple of episodes (I'm too far out of the age range).

Wesley

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I find Wesley's character arc from BtVS to the end of Angel incredibly interesting and just a really amazing transformation. And it seemed so natural, but then you look back and see where he started and it almost seems like a totally different character.

I don't love all the choices made, but I just find his transformation interesting.

I love corruption arcs, so Will Graham from Hannibal, though it could be argued that it wasn't so much corruption as just recognizing his own person suit. Either way, he is so much more comfortable and sure of and in himself. Great therapy there, Dr. Lector!

You don't see this very often but when a dumb character gets smarter I love it. The only examples I can think of right now are Dean venture and Eli from boardwalk empire.

Thoughts you can't shake

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone have any thoughts or ruminations they just can't seem to stop pondering?

#6637

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
An anon commented on a secret the other day and I can't stop thinking about what they said. It just really stuck with me for some reason.

The comment, for those interested:
"In my younger years, fiction was a way to escape into myself in a chaotic environment.
In my adult years, I reached a point where I couldn't handle bottling up my fears and worries anymore. It was like I was burnt out from all the escapism and it wore me down rather than gave me a way out."

T.W. eating disorder stuff

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I know for a fact I'm not a "bad" weight - I'm 9st 13 (63kg) - but I can't shake the idea that I need to throw up what I eat. It's especially dumb because I didn't even throw up what I ate to get me to 9st 13 in the first place, I just swam too much and ate too little. Why is my brain picking NOW to want to go that route?

When I'm feeling anxious or in a bad place, the one thing my brain can't seem to shake is thinking about what non-existence/non-awareness means. And then being terrified about the idea of not being aware anymore.

Also, my covid-addled brain has been watching random Youtube videos when I'm awake. And earlier there was one that had a clip at a zoo and mentioned that the alligator's name was "Darth Gator." I've been obsessing about that ever since.

obgyn anon from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you thank you thank you for the anons that replied and offered info and support! The anxiety was high all night and did not get much sleep and the lead up to the actual event was awful, but you were all right that the actual exam was not nearly as bad as the anxiety leading up to it. I explained to the Dr I was nervous and she was amazing. She said if I ever felt uncomfortable at any time we could stop and try again at a different day, but I told her if we didn't do it now I probably wouldn't come back. She was great at talking me through the whole thing and it was over so quickly.

Thank you again for the support! It really meant a lot.

When you read a book...

(Anonymous) 2025-03-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
do you read every word or just skim over it?

I read fairly fast, but I still read every word when I read a book. I have a friend who will talk about reading something, but she readily admits that most of the time she just skims over books. If you ask her about something she "read", she almost never remembers the characters' names, and can rarely tell you anything about the plot other than what's in the synopsis on the back cover/in an online description/whatever.

Because of this, she will "read" a fairly long book in like an hour, constantly brags about how much she reads, and is sometimes sort of snobby about how she reads so much more than everyone else in our group.

I personally don't feel like you can say you read a book if you get to the end of it and can't give any details about what it was about other than a vague synopsis, but maybe that's just me.

What do you guys think?

Historical Car Plates?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-11 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a website anywhere which shows what American car licence plates were, by state, from each decade?

Specifically the eighties and nineties?
