Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-26 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not. I can come across that way to some people because I do things that seem impulsive, but if you know me then you'd know I was actually considering it and thinking it through quite a bit before taking action. However today I randomly did a pretty big impulsive thing and my family are all calling me and laughing being like "who are you and what have you done with our family member?"

I could not be more of the opposite of impulsive. I need at least a day notice if plans are going to be changing, even small ones. The itineraries for my trips are always detailed, and that isn't taking into account the spreadsheets for them. I actually get mad/upset when plans change and I don't have enough time to process it.

ayrt - I'm often the same way in reaction to plans changing. I get so annoyed/angry and need time to process. Although I will say if I'm out and about and things change I'm pretty adaptable. Like if change happens in the moment I'm good but during the planning stages or if something is changed beforehand I get upset.

To this day this question makes no sense to me. Aren't we all half-half? Sometimes we can afford to be impulsive but sometimes need to think rationally. And not always the second leads to the best outcome and that's the tragedy of it all. I'm very anxious so I'm impulsive sometimes... often.

Re: Are you impulsive?

Do you really not understand that people are different from you? Not a snarky question, I'm just curious. I also like the "to this day" part because it implies you get this question a lot but that is not something I've experienced and the idea of continually running into "are you impulsive" discussions and being continuously baffled just makes me laugh.

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all. I see this is fundamentally a socioeconomic difference as far as I am aware. Some people can afford to be rational 24/7, some have impulses that aren't really useful from a survival perspective due to anxiety, hunger, mental illness or trauma - because we're all rational animals, meaning we're all a bit rational and a bit animal. Of course people are fundamentally different, but this? No.

I actually see this question floating around the internet a lot and once someone asked this to me in a context that changed my life forever for the worse so whenever someone asks me I go "oh. oh" lol

this's you calling poor people animals? wtf. Poor people don't get strange impulsies because they want to eat. People died from hunger keeping their spirit and morals undefeated. It's very classist of you. Rationality is not something only the wealthy posses. You'd be right at home with human zoos they used to have in Belgium up to 1994.

...no? I mean sure, most people are going to be some combination of impulsive and rational, but it's bizarre you think everyone's going to behave in an even split kind of way. Either you're not very observant, or you haven't met many people, I guess.

I've got an older relative who's got poor impulsive control when it comes to speaking, and general decision making. She's the type of person who regularly blurts out insulting or weird things and brings the conversation to a dead stop while people process whatever nonsense crap she just spouted. She's a spendthrift and loves shopping for knick-knacks and her collections even though she's on a limited income. Her house is crammed full of impulse purchases that are mostly overpriced tat. She's declared bankrupty more than once, and carries a considerable amount of credit card debt even though she has a decent paying job. It's just that she sees something shiny that she wants, and she tries to buy it. It's not about thinking rationally, and she'll get defensive if you try and explain to her that it's more important (and rational!) to make sure she has enough money to pay her bills and save for emergencies instead of dropping $200 on DVDs of stuff she won't watch.

Ayrt

Thanks for bringing an example so I can explain what I mean by I don’t believe in the divide of rational / impulsive

By all accounts she’s someone who speaks their mind (which frankly seems like autism to me so it could be as I said above mental illness) but maybe for them it’s something like, if I don’t speak my mind I can get anxious over being held accountable for agreeing with something I disagree. As for overspending they could have a relationship with the economy that’s like - I have a good pay so I need to spend or else who will. And it could be perfectly rational.

As a anxious person I am always thinking ahead and a lot, and as a traumatized person I have great reason to because most people who say things to “be helpful” are helping themselves only.

Rarely. My tendency is to overthink, and the more stressed and uncertain I am about it, the more I'll try to run it through my head, weigh the pros and cons and try to figure out if it's really worth it.

I decided at 1am to go adopt my two cats at 9am the next day when I got them so very, lol.

It's less going out to wild parties and meeting new people, but outside of work, having no structure at all and very much doing things on a whim. I have to be careful with my spending as that's the worst way my impulsiveness shines through, but otherwise I decide to do things because I want to in the moment, which my gf both loves and can find challenging to navigate because she's a 'needs to plan everything' kind of person. I go with the flow because I dislike set-structure to my daily life outside of necessity(work, and even at work doing my tasks for the day is on whims too, my manager doesn't care so long as it gets done).

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Basically not at all. Like you said, this doesn't mean I'm not spontaneous, it just means if I do something, the idea occurred to me, I thought about it, and I meant to do it as opposed to reacted by impulse.

People tend to assign randomness, but it's more that I'm a private person and they aren't as close to me as they think they are.

That's me. I do some weird things in life and people tend to think it's random and impulsive, but just because it's out of the ordinary doesn't mean I haven't planned it out and considered my options. I am very much not an impulsive person.

nayrt and same. I've done some wild shit in my life, but never without considering the potential risks/outcomes. There are just as many things that I HAVEN'T done because I thought about them and decided I didn't want to do them!

Re: Are you impulsive?

No. My financial advisor says at every meeting that I can and should spend more money (I'm not spending any budgeted money for: new clothes, new tech, decorating, entertainment, etc etc).

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
But that's not really impulsive? I spend money, but it's not impulsive spending.

Unless this was a joke that went way over my head.

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
No? The point was that I'm so not impulsive I don't even spend the money allocated to it. Like... some people are just walking by and impulse buy games, clothes, purses, etc etc. I don't even spend the money I have specifically allocated to those things, much less impulsively bought anything.

With money? No. I was raised right.
With speech? Yes. I was raised wrong.
With actions? 50/50. Sometimes it's ok just just have a little fun without worrying about the consequences. You always have to live with the consequences of your actions so why not have your fun upfront?

I have unmedicated ADHD, so yes. My entire life consists of behaving impulsively. If by impulsive we're talking about acting without planning or forethought. I don't even bother planning my day to day because even if I do *oooh distraction* happens.

I mean, I get things accomplished. But never due to planning or forethought. Often it's because I'm procrastinating on something I wanna do even less lol.

That said, I'm extremely sensitive to other people's plans. Like if I make a commitment to do something with other people, I'm compulsive about following through. Apparently it's just my own time I'm OK with playing with.

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I have unmedicated ADHD but I've been this way all my life but I've found ways to cope and not be impulsive. But I also wasn't happy living by impulse and never being able to plan, and in my case, live responsibly or be too dependable (time blindness was a big problem) . I just got sick of my own shit so had to teach myself coping mechanisms. (I'm in the US and poor with no insurance, so meds or therapy are not an option.)

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-27 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely the same with me, I can waste my own time as much as I want, but other peoples???? Oh no, no, no, I will be there 10 mins early prepared and ready to do whatever.

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-27 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I have anxiety so I overthink a lot of things, but that can cause me to make impulsive decisions at random times. I would like to believe I'm more cautious but I worry that I'm actually more impulsive than I think.

Re: Are you impulsive?

I’m super impulsive with money to the point I have a complicated system in place to keep me from spending my family into debt.

But I’m not impulsive in any other way. It’s so weird.

Re: Are you impulsive?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-27 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Proud of you for putting a system in place! So many people just shrug and say "this is how I am" and never try.
