What are your fic reading habits?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
To continue tonight's theme of Reading Time: what are your fic reading habits? Do you comment? Do you read Whole Works or Chapter by Chapter? Do you download the fic to read later? On your kindle or phone or pc? Anything else you want to share about your fic trends etc?

I read the whole works on ao3, chapter by chapter annoys me. Plus if ao3 goes down or something then I have the whole thing loaded and can finish reading whereas the chapter by chapter people are out of luck.

I've just started trying to download to my kindle, but not having too much success with it just because my attention span. I tend to flit around different fic depending on mood, so having a few on my kindle feels limiting and I just end up grabbing my phone and going to ao3 anyway.

One habit I have that is apparently weird is I scroll by tag and click on a fic so it's in my History, and then backbutton and keep scrolling. Then when I'm done with the tag or get bored I'll go back and scroll through my History to decide what to read. I use the History on ao3 like a type of bookmarking feature. I thought that seemed like an obvious use for it but I've been told that it's odd so who knows.

I almost exclusively read complete works I have downloaded on my Kindle. Sometimes when I have time to spare and I'm idle I read some WIPs while I'm on my computer, but I read them skimming paragraphs and gets distracted easily, so I try to do so sparingly. Very rarely I download and read abandoned fics.
I do comment on fics I particularly liked and I leave kudos to almost all fics I read unless I get a sense that the author didn't even try to write something coherent (very VERY bad writing with OOCs).

I do have a little notebooks where I hand-write notes about what I read and the authors I like. It's a mess and mostly written in codes and symbols because I just need to annotate a few things so I seldom write anything that makes sense to a stranger's eyes.
I'm at my third notebook now and I have begun this habit... mmmh... 6 years ago? Because I was downloading a lot of stuff to put on my kindle and I needed a reminder on what fic had that tag etc. It's incredibly uselful!

I generally only read completed fics. I read on PC and phone. I read anything longer than like 50k on my phone so I can keep my spot between reading. I download any fic I enjoy enough to bookmark just because. I also only read certain fandoms on my phone.

no WiPs for me

I used to actually enjoy reading works in progress. Subscribing and getting those updates and commenting as the story progressed was really fun. But I have been burned too many times with abandoned fic (no hate to the author, I just emotionally really hate being left without closure) so I no longer read WiPs. Complete fic only. Verrry rarely if it is an author I know is good for finishing - even if that takes years - then I'll go ahead and read and subscribe, but it's super rare these days.

I only read completed works and I usually read it on my PC, but if it’s a long fic I’ll download it and load it onto my kindle so I can read it without needing to be at my PC. I comment if I really enjoyed it, but especially if I download it so I can read it again when want because if I liked it that much I feel like I should let the writer know.

I read WIPs sometimes (if they start out promising or I already subscribe to the author) but generally I go looking for completed fic and I search by keywords for tropes and things I like.

I load the whole story instead of by chapter.

I do leave kudos and comment if I can. I read fic on either my laptop or an iPad. The last thing I want to do is squint at a phone. (Unless of course I'm on a train or something and I don't want someone reading over my shoulder) but I usually read in the evening in my comfy chair at home.

On my PC, chapter by chapter. I comment almost always; sometimes I don't if the fic is old, it has tons of comments, and the author has never replied to any.
I have a big 'Marked for Later' list, because I work mostly overnight shifts and can sit and read while everybody is asleep.
A couple of favorite authors are dipping their toes into Murderbot fic, which is fun. I often go through the bookmarks of favorite authors to find new things to read.

I only read completed works. I do almost every online thing in my phone except fic, which I usually read on my iPad. If I live it or it’s a super long fic, I’ll download and put it on my Kindle.

I don’t login to AO3, I don’t leave comments, and I don’t use their bookmarks or anything like that. But I do leave kudos.

Some of my oldest fandoms still have their own fic sites and I do login and comment there. “Just stopping by 25 years later because this is still amazing,” that sort of thing. I have all of my faves copied and pasted into documents and catalogued in Calibre. A lot of it is on my Kindle because they’re comfort reads for me after all these years.
