How do you read books?

I'll read samples and plot summaries and if it sounds interesting enough, I'll buy either ebook or physical book.

I get recs from Reddit/Tiktok. If they are on Libby, I read them (or at least try them out). Otherwise, I add them to my wishlist and usually get them for Christmas. If it is an author I really like, I'll buy it myself.

For published works I usually read physical copies only (I read a lot fanfics on my ebook reader, but I love the feel of paper). For fiction books I exclusively get them from my public library. For non-fiction stuff, I prefer buying if it's something I need to study so I can freely make notes or highlight stuff. Sometimes I borrow them first before deciding to buy on the criteria of future usefulness.

and brain.

No but serious answer, I check them out from the library and if I love them and know I'll want to read them again, then I buy them. Rarely my library can't get a copy of a book, then I'll just go ahead and buy it if I'm really jonesing to read it.

Library, mostly. Book store trip once every few years. I tend to prefer physical books because I get distracted from ebooks too easily.

Never tried audiobooks but I don't think I'd like them. I do like long-form made-for-audio podcasts that are basically books, though.

I've got an app for a bookstore on my phone so I'll skin through that to see if there's anything that sounds fun and then I search for it online to get a better idea of the plot/characters and if I like the sound of it all I'll order it from my local bookshop. Or if I'm in a physical store I'll skim a few pages of the book to see if I like the prose and get it.

I do get some duds that way but for the most part that works for me.

I get recommendations from LibraryThing, my social circle online and in person, and from a few book newsletters I'm a part of. I tend to read most books (and virtually all fanfic) on my e-reader, but occasionally I want a physical copy of a book because I like it or because there's just something satisfying about physically turning the pages. Usually taking advantage of e-book sales on Kobo or Thriftbooks (thriftbooks my beloved) as well as my local library - I only buy a brand new book if it's something really specific or if I want to support my local bookstore since they can do specific books.

I read reviews usually first by people on my flist, then usually on Amazon (their are usually a lot and they're easy to read through). For some reason, Goodreads reviews usually either irritate me or leave me having no clue about the book.
I also seek out authors who have had their books turned into interesting movies or series (that Silo series on tv was an interesting read), or i read the plot summaries that come in my email from some book sales groups.
Then I hope that I can get it from the library.

Kindle for immediate gratification and the library for everything else.

I'm that late Gen X type who could never be bothered to figure out how to pirate stuff. And yes, I've been told it's easy. I've even been told I'm stupid and lazy for not figuring it out. Like geez, y'all pirates do you, and I'll do me. I ain't judging.

I'm a sucker for paper and page-turning, so all my books are physical copies. I'm fortunate to live in a town with a lot of great charity shops, so it's never a huge amount of cash lost if I get something that's not for me, and I'll donate anything I've paid full price for elsewhere that I didn't click with.

Physically, while eating, book propped up om jigsaw puzzle box. My concentration is shot to hell, holding a book up myself takes too much energy, and this is the only way I can manage it.

Kindle, Libby, physical copies. Basically any way I can get my hands on them.

Re: Based on 1

(Anonymous) 2025-08-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Library, generally. Sometimes archive.org or anyflip, but it's not as comfortable for reading.

Library, (both physical and ebooks) charity shops, sometimes I see an interesting thing at the bookstore and buy it. Friends lend and gift me books and I do the same.

I read book reviews from magazines and newspapers, monitor the Recent additions page on my library's website, and browse a publisher's catalogue if I come across one to find new stuff to read.

I've been reading through the Blackwater Saga by Michael McDowell with my co-mod! We are on the last part now. :D

I finished reading When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy and that was amazing! Highly recommend.

And I started a book called The Hike by Drew Magary. It's okay so far.

Just finished The Medusa Protocol by Rob Hart. It was good but I found the ending a little lackluster. I think just because of one character that I kind of wanted a different ending/closure for.

I am in between books right now.

The Murderbot series for literally the 8th or 9th time. Also just read the same author's 'City of Bones' which was good. Also just got a Kickstarter book in the mail that I'm about four chapters into. " Kamikaze L'Amour" by Richard Kadrey.

To continue tonight's theme of Reading Time: what are your fic reading habits? Do you comment? Do you read Whole Works or Chapter by Chapter? Do you download the fic to read later? On your kindle or phone or pc? Anything else you want to share about your fic trends etc?
