Did it? Seems like that sort of cult following episodal thing moved to webtoons and online video, and straight to streaming and insert-streaming-service original series replaced VHS

Direct-to-video was shorthand for low quality movies that had poor writing, terrible acting, and abysmal editing. There’s definitely a market for that and it’s a shame that the cult followers aren’t getting a steady diet of that anymore. But the impact on fandom is nonexistent.

The direct-to-video market was just a subsection of the home video market, and not one super relevant to fandom unless you liked disney sequels or horror.

But yeah, the home video market was basically a chance to double your money (or a second chance at making profit at all) and could have long tails. Studios are less likely to take risks because streaming doesn't make money the same way, so they demand it makes a billion dollars right away.

Streaming has ruined everything. These types of movies still exist, The Clove Hitch Killer is a great horror movie that doesn't get enough attention. But it's buried in streaming platforms. I don't think fandom did much with these things but they were able to get more attention with audiences. I think there was also less material for the home movies to compete with so they could stand out more. Now everything is buried.

I think you're greatly underestimating the power and impact of D-list movies/franchises released by small streaming services. You might also want to seek out more friend groups or be more proactive about initiating if you miss bonding over group-watching lesser-known small-budget movies with one another and sharing in fandom brainrot over them, the rise of group-streaming browser apps has made this particularly fun and easy for others. ^^

This secret just hit me with a childhood memory bomb. Trips to Blockbusters on weekends, as special treats (like when my younger sister made steps toward her baptism) or just because. My mom was pretty indulgent like that <3

I really do think it makes things a hell of a lot more hard to find. As before watching a cult hit you'd be looking for the fandom as it exists, rather than now, where you need to be aware of the fandom first before you watch the media.
It takes away so much of the casual interest in all fandoms I think, since you need to find something nowadays rather than coming across it like we used to. That might just be me though.

Honestly, the whole situation just reads to me as "we didn't actually want to do another campaign, but we're contractually obligated, so we're doing everything we possibly can to pare down how much actual time each of us needs to dedicate to this thing."

I think some of these were on the easier side in terms of placing them relative to the other events. (I try to also guess the century or decade and did not great at that.)

And that last one is making me feel like there are some real gaps in my historical awareness.
