Rice Cookers

(Anonymous) 2025-09-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to get a rice cooker. I'm sick of my rice having a gummy bottom layer. Is the extra $20 worth it?

No. I've had a simple one similar to cheaper one you listed for like 10 years and it's done fine. If all you're doing is cooking rice in it you don't need anything fancy.

Just didn't know if the difference between cooking white and brown rice is huge enough to need a special button or not. In that case, I'll probably get the cheaper one.

If you often or mostly cook brown rice, it might matter.

It hasn't made a difference for me. I add a little more water with brown rice and it's been fine.

I will say I am not super picky about my rice. As long as it's not crunchy or soggy I'm happy.

I'm not quite sure what the question is asking:

Is $20 for a rice cooker, as opposed to no rice cooker, worth it? Y

Is there a significant difference between a $37 8-cup rice cooker and a $24 6-cup rice cooker? N except the size

SA Oh, to explain the unsureness, the price difference I see between the two rice cookers is $13, not $20 so I wasn't sure what the $20 was referring to. I dunno if that changes your valuation or not.

I will say I am not a great chef or anything, but I don't' think it matters. I have a smaller one that just has one button to turn it on and I've cooked all sorts of different rice in it and it's always been fine for me.

My sister has the big one and I find it more annoying to store and clean. It's just kind of clunkier. But I guess if you just keep it on the counter it doesn't really matter.

Either way, it will be a game changer! Rice cookers are such a small thing that brings a huge quality of life boost imo. It sounds silly, but it's just so much easier to dump the rice in and press a button and voila delicious rice. I was always fucking up rice on the stove, even though it's basically just boiling water.

I need one for a family of four so I think the 6 cup should cover that.

Re: Rice Cookers

(Anonymous) 2025-10-01 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's the exact one I've had for about 12 years. No issues with it at all!

Re: Rice Cookers

(Anonymous) 2025-10-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
The 8 cup or 6? Based on comments here, I think I'll just get the 6 cup. I don't eat brown rice enough to justify getting a special button just for it.

I love my little cheapy rice cooker. I've had it for more than 10 years, actually maybe close to 20, and it still does rice real good.

Yes, the extra $20 is worth it. You get a lot more versatility with the 8 cup. It isn’t just larger but you have different cooking modes. I have an older model that has four rice modes plus steam and slow cook. My family uses it almost daily either for rice or steaming vegetables. I also use it for clarifying homemade chicken broth.

IME, the very simple one-button rice cookers work great and if you don't need a lot of different functions from your rice cooker, it should be fine. Hopefully the nonstick insert will mean no gummy bottom layer - that used to be a problem with the older models.

Personally, I own and like the more expensive model and the timer setting comes in handy at times when I'm leaving the house, but want fresh rice at a certain time and don't want to keep it on warm for hours until it dries out.

I feel like I'm the only one who knows how to cook rice on the stove in a pot

Re: Rice Cookers

(Anonymous) 2025-10-01 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
you're not the only one, but I admit I have looked at rice cookers. the problem is, there's only two of us so they're all just too big for our needs. I make a cup-and-a-half (dry) with most recipes and at worst we end up with just enough left over to go with the rest of the leftovers. I'm sure a rice cooker is a game-changer for a larger household.

Aroma also has 4 cups (cooked, so 2 cups dry) models as well:

Though it's perfectly fine to cook 1 1/2 cups dry in a rice cooker with a 6+ capacity. People do it all the time.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-01 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Just because people own a rice cooker doesn't mean they don't know how to cook rice on the stovetop. I own one because I eat a lot of rice, it turns out perfectly in the cooker and I don't need to watch it, it doesn't take up space on the stove, and because I own a model where I can set the timer and have the rice ready to eat when I get home from work.

You're not and that's a really dumb thing to think.

I use a specialized tool for a common task; that doesn't mean I can't still use more generalized tools. I can make tea in a tea pot, with my little silicon sloth tea leaf holder, a metal strainer, a tea bag, or just loose in my mug.

DA

It's not though. Some people just don't waste time, money, or space, on useless gear that can easily be replaced by eye, or common object alone.

Re: Rice Cookers

(Anonymous) 2025-10-01 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you just cook it in a pot or do you use a steam basket?

I can cook it both ways and I have a rice cooker. I prefer the steam basket double boil method, but for convenience with better outcome I use a rice cooker regularly.

*and if I'm feeling particularly lazy, I microwave the single serve rice bowls from the Korean grocery market ^_^

It’s silly to think people can’t cook rice on the stove. I have a rice cooker for several reasons. It frees up a burner if I’m making rice at the same time I’m making dinner, it’s a set it and forget it task so I can go do other things without concern I’ll burn the house down, and a high volume rice cooker is more affordable and easier to store than the size cookout I’d need to make 12 cups of rice at a time. Everyone in my household but the cat eats brown rice with every meal. That is a lot of rice and I make a batch every 3-4 days that we store in the fridge. I could do all of that on the stove, but why would I?

Re: Rice Cookers

(Anonymous) 2025-10-01 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had that issue. Just use a pot and then shake it to level as best you can and use the crease of your thumb to measure if the water is high enough, about an inch give or take to how much rice you're cooking. Cook on med for 20-23 mins, don't let it overboil, (turn heat down if/when it does) and after the timer goes off check it for excess moisture by flipping the pot over to see if it drips, if so cook it 1-4mins more, but take it off early after a check if it smells like it's crisping, otherwise it's fine.
Then again, rice cookers exist for a reason. I love the way I make my rice, but you might not.

I wouldn't buy from walmart any day of the week, but it depends on the space you have to store the device, and how often you cook rice. Can you eat eight cups of rice in the time it'll become poisonous? If not, buy the smaller one. That's still a lot of rice, and you'll both save some space and a lot of waste with buying the smaller of the two... Uh, assuming the 6-cup version is actually the smaller of the two models.

For this brand, it depends on how much rice you eat. If you eat a lot of rice/have a big family, the $20 is definitely worth it.

If you can do with 6 cups or less rice a day, I'd go with the cheaper one.

Tip I got a few years ago for rice cookers, the sooner you fluff up the rice after it's done cooking the less likely the rice will gum up later.
Also, turning the heat off shortly after the rice is done cooking will also help prevent gumminess.
