Books that hit like fic

(Anonymous) 2026-01-19 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever read any books that hit you the same way fic/fandom tropes do? Like a book that has solid h/c or other kind of 'classic fandom tropes'.

I think the only book that ever came close for me was Murderbot. It's not really the same, but it gave me a lot of the same vibes and almost scratched the same itch as some fic.

Tolkien in general hits a lot of my favorite vibes. Lots of H/C, heroic sacrifice, and other things that are my favorite tropes.

DK Broster, The Flight of the Heron. Set during the 1745-6 Rising in Scotland. Enemies to (very close) friends, clashes of personal loyalty and duty, shedloads of h/c, actual historical accuracy mostly, wonderful scenery and atmosphere. It's on Gutenberg and Librivox.

If you want fanfic (and you probably will) it's listed under "Jacobite Trilogy", because over half a century after first publication it was re-issued in a single volume with its sequels.

Also by her: The Wounded Name, which is set during the Vendee Rebellion in France and has most of the above dialled up to 11, but lacks its sheer narrative drive; and Mr Rowl, about a Napoleonic officer on the run in England through no fault of his own.

The Sin City series reads like porn fanfic with just enough plot.

When I was a teenager, I got into the "TTYL" book series. It was about high school girl friends and we experience their stories through AIM/MSN chat room style writing.

I spent most of the 2010s not in fandoms, and when I returned in the late 2010s, it was interesting to see so many fanfics written chat room style. Makes sense because fandomers know how to do chat room chatter and such stories are so easy to read and to write, especially when being indulgent with characters in a fandom one enjoys.

Coworker making AI video of us

(Anonymous) 2026-01-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Today my coworker delightedly showed all of us how she made this AI video clip of a bunch of us doing this stupid dance. I was kind of infuriated? Don't use my photos for this shit??? And she couldn't get why I and a few others were mad. It was like half of the people said what's the big deal, who cares, and the other half of us weren't happy with it. But I'm genuinely stewing over it still, I'm irrationally angry over this tbh.

I am so annoyed by the general trend to look down on and make fun of people on the GLP1 meds. People seem to think if you take them it's a magic drug that makes fat disappear, not the reality that it takes work and changing your diet and lifestyle and the medication helps you do that. So many jokes about "Americans would rather do anything than just go to the gym" like people aren't already working out or haven't tried anything else.

I know part of it is because of the 'heroin chic' look that's coming back in Hollywood in part because of the abuse of these drugs, but for the general public it isn't like that and the general public is who a lot of the jabs are about.

I know I'm being too sensitive about this and normally I just roll my eyes but it just annoyed me a bit extra tonight.

So this spa my mother and I go to does gift cards. My mother treated me to one for Christmas. Only the person who took her order attached it to my account, which they aren't supposed to do. Which meant the card was used on my appointment for December 15 without anyone telling me.

My fault partially for not getting a receipt. But still really annoying because I would have made at least 1 less appointment today if I'd known I didn't have the gift card.

For some reason my work can't just fucking fire our shitty photographer who was hired by previous management. So they decided to keep her in the office while she isn't on a job. Sitting right fucking behind me. And space is organised so badly that I will keep just hitting her with my elbows every time I breath.
I guess they don't need me. Because I am not working like that.

Goddamn I am tired of being held responsible for shit that is owned by other departments. Like holy shit, take some goddamn ownership here. You don't fucking CARE that your bosses are going to penalize you for this? (But nonny, you might say. Just let them deal with the consequences! Yeah, then I fucking deal with the consequences because leaders don't want to fucking lead, and I am not a leader. This is what happens when someone wants all of the control and none of the responsibility because they don't consider this one area to be of any importance, despite what their bosses have told them.)

Was there anything you were obsessed with as a kid that you could not explain to anyone now?

I loved watching .hack//Sign as a kid but couldn't tell you what any of it was about.

Not really. Plenty of things I'm not at all into anymore, but I could probably still explain them. I'm just not into them anymore, may not even like them anymore.

Same with .hack//Sign! I have no idea way and also cannot tell you anything about it but I was obsessed for a flash.

I think it was basically the same with Serial Experiments Lain. Like I could explain that one a little bit more but it was so bonkers idk if I'd make any sense to anyone who hadn't watched it.

Galerians, I actually understood the plot for the first time as an adult rewatching the movie and watching a YouTube compilation someone did of the second game. As a kid I loved it but I couldn't have told you one thing about the story.

Zoids. Mostly because it switched between two different versions. One was just people fighting in giant robots, one had little dinosaurs that had souls?

I was obsessed with Archie comics as a kid and have no clue why now.

Angel Sanctuary. I think I still vaguely remember what it was about but I don't think I could explain it in detail anymore.

I was absolutely besotted with Weiss Kreuz when I was in my early teens. I still have the manga somewhere and the poster that came with it was on my wall for years.

I can't explain to anyone in my life now why I loved it, I just did, a lot. And while I could never go back and watch it again (the anime was atrocious even by late nineties standards), it did have some awesome music that I won't skip if it comes up on my shuffle now. As long as no one's around.

The Nanny. There was a point where I just loved it SO MUCH! and I really don't know why I had such a strong response to it.

I watched a lot of Night Court and Laverne & Shirley as a kid but I barely remember anything about them.

I only remember Night Court because I remember watching a show where people were constantly in a court room. I can't recall anything about the show but my mind does go "I recognize this" whenever I see any pictures or snippets of the show.
Literally all I remember from Laverne & Shirley was the opening credits/theme song, because my mom and aunt were production line workers in big manufacturing factories and so it left an impression on me.

I can only imagine what other old shows I forgot that I watched as a kid. But for whatever reason I recall Night Court and Laverne & Shirley the most. I'm inclined to believe I watched A LOT of Night Court.

When I was a kid I had a *huge* crush on BJ the yellow triceratops from Barney. What the fuck was that about? I have no idea. And yet it's one of my earliest memories.
