Them: Only virgins want idealized sex and romance in fantasy. I, the enlightened, want to see realism
Me: So like unwashed genitalia smelling bad after a sweaty day at work, or not quite getting every trace of shit out of an ass, or when you kiss someone and they still taste like the tuna sandwich they had for lunch, or morning breath
Them: No no no stop, ew. I clearly meant idealized realism that remains sexy but maybe a little bit silly. Not like those people that want idealized idealism
Me: ಠ_ಠ

Yeah, it’s weird how some people get so pressed about the features of other people’s fantasies, especially such common ones.

I get wanting a certain level of half-reality – sometimes your suspension of disbelief gets stretched too far or something feeling a little more real is just much more satisfying. I even get that there can be some uncomfortable friction when your line isn’t where the local norm is. But deciding that people who draw the line somewhere else are wrong (or wrong-via-being-virgins?) is not the answer.

I think this only gets more contentious when it’s about love and romantic relationships and not just the physicality of sex.

I feel like reading about realistic sex is inferior to having realistic sex. I’d rather write sex you can’t go out and have.

Basically how I see most smut as well.

This is why I find plain vanilla smut to be boring. If that's what I want, I can just have it for myself.

This reminds me of something I found so gross in a fic, and it was mentioning pizza grease all over someone's mouth/face when they were kissing.

Like, wipe your mouth, barbarian! The character was averagely fastidious, too. Gross.

Yeah that's less about realism as much as it is just being a slob. I've come across things like that too, just ew.

Or the bit in Middlesex where it says his dick smells like mushrooms. TBF, they’re in an old-timey boat and I’m not sure how or if you bathe on one of those, but still.

I mean, to be fair, a lot of mushrooms don't actually smell like much.

If I had a dollar for every time someone complained about idealized sex then went on to say they want to see 'rough and dirty' sex instead... without bothering with all those nitpicky things like health and safety issues and consequences, ofc, just rough and dirty... or '''bad''' sex... with temporarily embarrassing but ultimately totally physically harmless failures and shenanigans where everything ends up well and everyone laughs and cuddles afterward and is even more in love with each other, ofc...

I think it's safe to say everyone wants idealism in fantasy. People who claim otherwise are ones that don't realize or don't want to admit that their flavor of ideal is simply different from other flavors of ideal

I y'know, prefer a middle ground. Like most people.

I don't need tons of focus on random or unappealing details (unless the scene is meant to be funny or dark, not an erotic scene), but a few "average" moments really bring a scene to life for me. It feels more grounded and like the more idealized parts of the scene are easier to picture. My brain fills in the rest, I assume it was a realistic scene without having to know every smell or awkward thing that happened.
