I have no interest in video games.

I tried playing them as a kid, was bad at it, and didn't have the drive, discipline, or patience to get good at it, so I gave up.

That’s fair, not all forms of media are going to appeal to everyone.

+1

This shouldn't have to be a secret.

Most secrets shouldn't *have* to be a secret.

I feel this way

But not video games but other big popular things in fandom. There is always this sort of yearning to be into a thing that seemingly everyone else in your circle is into, or a feeling like I need to try a different approach or that I'm doing something wrong to not get the same joy, but it just doesn't always work.

I love video games, but perhaps ironically(?) my favorite genres are the ones that don't require skill or practice or hand-eye coordination, like Cookie Clicker and the like. Sure, playing with good strategy makes you progress faster, but it's literally impossible to "lose." I find them more fun and relaxing than the usual stuff that's all challenge-based.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
so you're literally missing out on a whole genre because you equated God of War or Centipede or anything in between as equivalent to all other games released in the same time period regardless of mechanic.

Your loss, literally.

the "git gud" level of gaming has frustrated me for 20+ years consistently but I also moved beyond those games to find games that are fun, do not require being good at any intrinsic factor, and also justfuckmethestoryissogood I deal. I won't be able to 100% them on Platform of Choice because I won't clear 2 sub-substories that require beating one optional boss to unlock second optional boss but also the reward won't help you in the actual endgame fight so why bother? Trophy wants me to do all of that but also on Chaos mode, so also fuck trophies. It's not worth it, none of it is worth it!!!

So if you failed at playing a single level of Sonic in 1998 and gave up, and are now eternally mad at video games over it to the point of writing a secret? literally Your Loss.

Or, wild idea, OP just doesn't like video games. They don't even sound mad, but you sure do.

not op but LMAO you are so fucking defensive

life is short and there's a million billion stories and arts out there to experience. I'm going to spend my available brief time alive focusing more on the kinds of art that don't come with lots of bonus chores

godspeed to the people who enjoy video games, chase your bliss etc and then tell me the cool bits, I'm going to read a book that doesn't make me grind for however long to get to the next scene, cause I simply do not care for that part

(are there very VERY narrative-heavy games I would theoretically be interested in trying someday? yeah. do I have the kind of computing machine to play them at this time? no. maybe if AI bubble doesn't kill us all and someday I have money)

I mean, I'm shit at video games for both co-ordination and disability reasons. There's still games I enjoy, but I'm not mad at anyone who doesn't want to bother. And they don't sound mad at games either. Unlike you.

"Video games" is a pretty broad descriptor, though. I've been playing a series called Full of Cats. You look around a picture and click on all the cats. That's definitely not the same skillset as Super Meat Boy, and neither of them are Europa Universalis.

Glad to see people (mostly) being chill and good-faith about this secret.

Though I will repeat what at least one other anon said; that video games are incredibly broad. Though the most well-known examples of video games involve a lot of stress/patience in avoiding getting killed, there are definitely more laid-back cozy type games. Such as Animal Crossing, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Fashion Dreamer, etc. Even visual novels, though I haven't played many of those.

But if you prefer a medium where things are laid out in front of you, like novels or shows, or just hobbies that give you more tangible rewards for your efforts (e.g., embroidery, miniatures, cosmetics) I get that too.

I feel you, because same.
And I tried playing as an adult, but you are extremely so far behind in a skill set, so it's fucking boring and mildly embarrassing. For example, consoles are absolutely not as usable and simple as even casual gamers think.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 03:55 am (UTC)(link)

Are you aware that there are genres of game that you don't have to "git gud" at?

Lacking the skills to play Dark Souls shouldn't make you feel like you can't play The Stanley Parable.

not op

as a pretty comfortably confirmed non-gamer, I enjoyed my brother walking me through TSP and even played some runs myself, but it didn't like...make me want to Game in general.

even low-stress stuff that isn't in the 'git gud' genre is like....so much repetitive stuff (Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing), or so much walking around and poking things and dead ends mixed into whatever the cool narrative or puzzle is. video games can be super interesting, but tbh I'd rather watch somebody's edited playthrough or discussion video on YT so I can skip the chaff and also get some of my real life non-optional chores done

Growing up we didn't have a console of any kind in my house, so I feel you op!
