I guess this mostly makes me think of how a person can show such different sides of themself in different settings, internet persona not required.

I have a family who’s lovely when she’s on her own, but acts very much like this when she’s with her husband.

Tbh I get it. Some things you can't unsee. I unfollowed a mukbanger's travel YT channel bc her boyfriend/fiance kept rambling on about losing weight and what fad he was following to do so every. single. video they did together. And then her parents got involved and I couldn't stand it.

Like, mate, I'm here for the food and travel. Please shut up.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe she's as bad a person as the video made you believe. Or maybe she was having a bad day and ended up apologizing to the friend afterwards. Or maybe there was some conflict prior between them, and she was still angry about it. I don't think one video tells you much apart from the fact that she can act in an unfriendly way on occasions, like pretty much everybody else. It doesn't automatically mean she was pretending to be nice and kind before, or that you were wrong to like her.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-09 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
From your examples, it seems like a divide between what you imagine to be visible minorities vs. invisible ones that you wouldn't know about someone unless told?

Ngl, if there isn't an interesting summary for the story/media or even a bare minimum description to say what kind of media its gonna be - I'm not going to care about the creator.
Like, I would happily support diversity of creators in the genre/medium I'm interested in... as long as its interesting.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-09 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'm less likely to engage with someone's work if they mention that they're /any/ minority as if it's an advertising point irrespective of the quality of what they've written or made.

It doesn't make me feel any more kindly disposed to their work and if it did it would feel dishonest. They haven't earned that based on the work's merit alone and while I know some things can inform the work, it's not always the case. I read a book by a trans author and it was the biggest pile of garbage I've ever had the displeasure of reading. I couldn't even finish it. And it had a trans character in it.

It just seems like brownie point farming and I'm not here for it.

And I say this as a doubly queer, neurodivergant afab.

I don't think you hate yourself. I think you're aware how some of these identities are vague and sometimes people use them to fall back on when their art/writing is mediocre. Like, queer can mean anything from a cis gay, a genderfluid aroace or a kinky cishet. Neurodivergent or disabled can vary from someone who is bed bound from chronic illness or someone with mild ADHD they're medicated for. Obviously I don't think people *should* disclose specifics, but if you're going to pull out the label game I don't care for umbrella terms.

I think the issue may be that in a lot of spaces, queer/disabled/neurodivergent are labels that people opt into and out of as it suits them. There's no opting out of being Black.

For me, it's not a distinction of what labels the person uses and more like... I think it's great if someone is applying a label to themselves because they're open about who they are, the life experience that influences their work, whether or not it's Own Voices, but there's this different feeling when it feels like it's not just a low-pressure sales pitch ("If what you are looking for is more stories about Black women or disabled queer people, consider me maybe") and more like someone trying to guilt trip up an audience ("Why would you buy a book/game/piece of art from some white/straight/abled MAN when you could be supporting a ~~Marginalized Artist~~?").

I'm, you know, marginalized along multiple axes, and an artist. I get that it makes shit harder-- and some people are going to have it worse than me in that respect, too. I don't think it's inherently cringe or inherently an added social pressure for someone to say 'hey, being (X identity) obviously impacts my work, and that's relevant information for people who are actively looking for it'. But there are other times where the vibe is off-putting.

Maybe it feels different for POC or women, because we already have markets for art produced by and for those communities. (Thinking of, for instance, anime--made by Japanese artists for a Japanese market--, or Black cinema--made by Black artists for an assumed-Black audience--, or the vast majority of the romance genre--mostly written by and for women.) Of course there have always been queer, disabled, and neurodivergent artists creating art for their own communities, but not with the same recognition (or funding) of these other groups--maybe due to the "invisibility" of those identities, leading to them not be considered a market worth addressing, or some other factor.

Either way, now there's been a turn towards thinking of representation as a social good (as well as something that makes money). But imo it sometimes comes with that sort of educational tone: "experience my art to teach yourself about other perspectives", rather than "experience my art because it appeals to your interests and sensibilities". I think this is an unfortunate pigeon-holing of art from marginalized groups, but nevertheless, when art has this kind of vibe to it, I do lose interest. That is, I tend to not like stories that feel like they're packaging a minority experience for consumption by a majority audience. There's sometimes a self-consciousness that I find distracting, as if the artist is too aware of the audience--of its expectations, of what level of consciousness it may or may not have about a topic, etc. I feel a little condescended to, in other words. (Maybe rightly--but I don't like to feel it!)

For me, this extends out to when people introduce themselves and their art by highlighting their marginalized identities. I think it's one thing to analyze or discuss your art in the context of your identity or your community, but it's something else to lead with that information, imo--like the most important thing about your work is that you're gay in real life. (I say this as an artist who IS gay in real life btw lol.)

No, I hear you.

There are tons of things that can disadvantage a person in their professional life but feel weird about using for marketing. If an artist used their parent's income level, or school system's national ranking, or the corruption of their home town government, or or their family history of heart disease, or whatever it'd feel weird.

Also also, I know for a fact that female and/or certain races have been underrepresented in American* art. I don't know the sexuality or disability status of every author who's published in English, but I know plenty of them were**, so I'm less interested in boosting that demographic. Is that bad of me? I don't really care.

*only country I have a good enough grasp on to be confident
**Herman Melville I'm looking at you

It wouldn't fit the plot or their characterization at all, but hot damn do I ship it. Maybe if Blackthorne were better looking (sorry Cosmo Jarvis) but since he isn't, I just could not get into him and Mariko as a couple. But Toranaga? Yes, please!

I'd be down with both the (admittedly cliché) dominant lord vs. submissive woman, but I'd be equally down for Mariko taking control and making Toranaga beg for mercy and release.

I don't care how many seasons it went on for afterwards, but Mock the Week was never as strong after they fired Frankie Boyle for being too funny and "stealing" Hugh Dennis and Dara's laugh spots.

I can understand that - in person you've got texture and scent, onscreen it's just visuals. If it's not solely a visual preference it makes sense that it would be different.

I miss going to conventions. I went to several with my dad when I was younger and a couple on my own as well. My life is so hectic and my energy level is so slow that I can't manage it anymore. But someday I want to go to Dragoncon again. So many fond memories.
