If I could afford meds for my panic attacks, I'd gladly take them. I'd give up being able to write fanfic if it meant having something to get me through the really intense attacks.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, my generic Klonopin is under 40 dollars for 60 of them, and I don't have insurance. Go to a doctor. 20 dollars + 90 for the one time doctor's visit is well worth the cost.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have $110. I'm quite literally broke.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you able to see a doctor? Because a lot of doctors will have free samples of various medications that they can give you. That's how I got my Lamictal for nearly a year.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I see an acute care physician. He won't prescribe pain meds or anything for mental health.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
What a fucker. Is there a free clinic in your area? Because a lot of GPs will prescribe psychiatric meds, and may even have some sedatives on hand.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the person above, but *waves the clonazepam flag*

No offense, anon, but are you a kid? Because if so then I really suggest talking to your parent or guardian and getting the assistance you need that way.

If you're an adult than you need to know there are a lot of low-income services out there for you. Some doctors will bill you later, enabling you to scrape up the money in the next few weeks. As for the perscription, the big companies like wal-mart and walgreens have a prescription discount program for generics. Check with them because I know they sell some anti-depressants for 4 dollars.

And my intention is NOT to sound harsh, but since you're on the internet I assume you do not live in a cardboard box, yes? And if you have the internet then you have a computer. You probably have a checking account, so you can always go into one of those Check Into Cash places and get yourself an easy 200 you can pay back in a few weeks. If you don't want to do that then remember that you have an internet bill. Probably a cable bill/cellphone bill as well... I think you know where I'm going with this.

Sometimes life is about choices. If I had the choice between medication that can stave off a disabling panic attack and an hour a day loling at F!S then I would pick the medicine.

I hope things get better for you, anon. Don't let despair get you down. If there is a will then there is a way to getting the help you need.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an adult. I'm on a library computer and don't have a checking account. I don't have a job because I provide live-in care for my grandparents. I don't have a cell phone and we don't have cable. The only bill I have is car insurance.

That all said, I'll look into low-income services. The only thing I've been able to find locally so far is therapy w/no meds.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Check out local charities. There are some that will provide psychiatric services. I know that Catholic Charities will pay for you to see a psychiatrist, and I'm sure that there are others.

On the outside chance that you happened to live around Camden, NJ, I know of a free clinic here for the uninsured. (I don't think the doctors there will tend to prescribe Klonopin or any other benzos since they're not on the $4 lists at either Walmart or Target and I don't think there's any on hand at the moment, but at the least you could get care and there are some SSRIs on the list if that happens to be appropriate for you.)

Otherwise, if you live anywhere else in the US, the national 2-1-1 Call Center search (http://www.211.org/) is a directory of all the 211 call centers by state & region which can put you in touch with whoever you need to speak to in order to find out about low income health services in your area.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Get care credit.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I did a Google search on this and came across the Care Credit website. I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to but the only resources that came up in my area are veterinary, chiropractic, and vision.

This. I tried everything and nothing stopped the panic attacks. If I could have found any meds that actually worked I would have given up ANYTHING.

In the end what made them stop was getting suicidally depressed instead. Yay, me? And the meds aren't helping that either...

Sorry, I'm done whining now.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the same problem (cycling between crippling panic attacks and suicidal depression), until one doctor diagnosed me with Bipolar NOS. While I'm not 100% better, being put on the right medications really did make a difference. I'd suggest talking to your doctor, make sure that you have the right diagnosis.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually had other people suggest the same thing. Thanks, anon, I'll talk to him. ♥

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, I can't imagine what I'd do in this situation. But you're right - when you have panic attacks there's nothing you won't give up to make them stop.

[identity profile] slr2moons.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I went through a bout of panic attacks last fall and early winter, but I was able to control and stop them without meds. If you can do the same--and fanfic is certainly a valid reason if it works!--then I say do it, by all means.

Drugs can mess with your head, and as you say in your secret, that is not always a good thing. *hugs for you*

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I saw your picture and immediately was like, "KLONOPIN SECRET!!"

Klonopin has actually induced major creativity in me. And I have serious anxiety. It's writer's block-related, actually. I've gotten so much stuff done with it.

So this secret is kinda interesting to me.

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, that information could be relevant to me (anxiety attacks related to writing, although more to do with academic writing than fic). Thanks for one more reason to get off my ass and to a doctor's office.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit this kind of..disgusts me. I suffered from MAJOR anxiety for years before figuring out what was wrong (I was still a kid) and being put on heavy-duty meds for 24/7, plus Xanax for acute panic attacks. If your anxiety is really that bad, you say fuck absolutely everything else and you take the drugs you need to get you through the day. End of story. This stuff, when it's needed, is NOT optional, and I'm sick of people thinking anti-anxiety meds and similar aren't just as absolutely necessary as blood thinners or inhalers or insulin. If you need it, for fuck's sake, take it! If what you have now inhibits basic function to such an extent, talk to your doc about switching to something similar.

Sorry to go off on you, anon, I just see stuff like this way too much and it really, really bothers me.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, fabulous. Just what this thread needed, someone deciding who is "really" sick, and who isn't. If you can function EVER without meds, you don't need them, eh?

Just a thought, oh-so-thoughtful anon...but have you considered the idea that some people can have multiple co-morbid conditions? Someone might have a milder anxiety-related condition that they might otherwise be able to cope with without medication, if they didn't also have other issues draining their spoons - making anti-anxiety meds something which is sometimes necessary for them and sometimes not.

Sorry to go off on you anon, but - oh, no, wait. I'm not sorry! It's not your call whether other people "need" meds or not - it's theirs and their doctor's.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, that's all too often the trade-off with psychiatric meds. Only you can decide when you need them and when you can afford to skip them in order to retain your creative faculties. In a perfect world, nobody would ever have to make that choice, but we don't live in a perfect world.

All the best to you, anon.

[identity profile] mirai-gohan.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This reminds me a lot of my best friend. She takes Klonopin for panic attacks, too, but they level her out to the point of numbness, and she kind of hates it, too.

Though I can't speak from personal experience, I do know you're the only one who reacts this way to the meds.

Maybe you can check into a different kind of medication? I don't know if there's any other drug out there specifically for stopping panic attacks, but you still might talk to your doctor and see if they can recommend anything else, or even any methods of dealing with attacks that will help you cope without taking the meds (especially since it sounds like you're willing to try riding it out, anyway).

Good luck, Anon.

(And good luck to the other anons in this thread who seem to need help, too. *hugs all*)

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I understand you completely, Anon.

Six years ago I went off my antidepressants. The panic attacks had largely stopped(not completely, but I could control for triggers), and I had changed my life to be less stressful overall, which helped. But the main reason I stopped completely was because I got pregnant and I didn't want to expose my child to them.

Five years ago, when my Mum died when my baby was just under three months old, they talked about putting me back on them. I did go to counselling (and I'm lucky enough to live in Canada where the doctor's visits are free and so was the counselling and the meds were affordable), but I refused to go back onto the medication. Doubtless they would have helped, but I didn't absolutely need them.

And my main, heck, my only reason, was because while I retain the technical ability to write, while I'm on them I lose all inspiration.

All.

Heck, I didn't even dream.

My one real release, my one way of coping, would have been taken away from me. Yes, the meds might have helped me to function in my day-to-day life, but at the expense of a large part of what makes me me, and... well, the best way I can put it to say imagine having a broken leg. You have a cast so you can get by, but not easily. What you really need is a cane or crutches. And you can get them, and they will help you walk-- but the design is such that you won't be able to sit down or lie down to rest. The crutch will support you, but at the cost of having to stay on the crutch, if that makes sense. And I found it worth finding it harder to gimp around without the crutches if it meant that I could lie down sometimes.

If you need them, then do use them. Permit yourself that temporary crutch if the alternative is worse. But as my therapist said when I refused the medication, having that outlet (in our case, fanfic) is a valuable thing, too.

Good luck with it all! :D There is hope: I've been off the meds for six years now and while it was rough, especially when Mum died, it got easier. Things are pretty good now.

Good luck!!
