That would indeed be what I said if you didn't read any of the rest of what I said; quote-mining isn't a terribly classy tactic, either.

Actually, The Boss is a brilliant example of my point, which you continue you miss, deliberately or otherwise. She gave birth on the battlefield and was profoundly affected by it. This was an experience for her as a woman what she would not have had were she a man. Indeed, the whole "this is proof that I was a mother" is one of the defining moments of her characterization as a distinctly female soldier. And you're being deliberately obtuse again, the influence of the patriarchy is rampant in the MGS series - just look at Meryl. Her character is defined by her struggle against the male-dominated social mores of the military. A male Meryl would not have dealt with this. Among countless other examples.

Well, thanks for handing me that one, anyway.

You cite [livejournal.com profile] demiincarnate's poorly phrased example as evidence of this collapse, yet you refuse to challenge mine - that of the present day US Army Rangers. This leads me to believe you don't really have a point, to be frank, and are nit-picking, as well as throwing around spurious accusations of sexism with no evidence.

As a result, I'm beginning to get the impression this has either become a vanity argument for you, or you're trolling.

EDIT: It also sort of breaks my heart that you're disenfranchising The Boss of her womanhood. She is one of my favourite characters of all time, and one of the greatest heroes ever written, male or female. But women as heroic soldiers are written far less often than men. Especially women who are so definitely steeped in female experiences like birth and motherhood. To rob her of his, to say that her gender plays no part and a man who was The Boss would be identical is to destroy everything Kojima did so brilliantly with her character.

(Let's try that again with grammar this time >_>)

LOL, I love everyone saying that "all the fans know it's not accurate" when the intended audience is Japanese kids and no, they don't fucking know that it's inaccurate.

I could care less about the "weeaboos" reading/watching it (and I think the show is pretty cute myself), but Japanese kids learning that Japan's relationship with China during WWII was a brotherly one gone slightly off-course? Um, I sort of see a problem with that.

NO, IT'S JUST IF IT DOESN'T FIT THE NARRATOR'S TONE.

"MARK HAD A LOVELY MORNING. MARK IS GOING TO HAVE A LOVELY AFTERNOON BECAUSE HIS GIRLFRIEND IS COMING OVER FOR A DATE. THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE STEAK AND BAKED POTATOES. STACI FINALLY COMES OVER. THINGS GET STEAMY.

MARK PULLS OUT HIS COCK."

STUFF LIKE THAT. ERECT PENIS IS JUST AS BAD, EW.

[identity profile] onlyinthislight.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
If you like it fine, I really don't give two shits. But, just because you do like it doesn't mean it ISN'T sexist, badly written sue-fic. Don't wave off the very fair and serious critiques against this book and what it stands for just because you don't want to feel guilty for liking it.

I have friends who like shitty shitty things, but are aware of and willing to admit to those work's flaws, and look at them critically. I respect that. Hell, I myself love some shitty shitty stuff. But does that make the shitty shitty stuff objectively awesome stuff just because I subjectively love it? No.

People who turn a blind eye or flat out deny all the criticism and harm a work or series causes just because they like it? ...

Sorry, no respect here. Take your cognitive dissonance elsewhere.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO. Straining euphemisms are totally just as bad as cock, ngl. I like simple ones, sure, but I hate when people try to step out on a limb and be overly creative with euphemisms.

I pictured a Steelix having a huge penis when you said STEELY MANHOOD.

..............................what, that is so sad.

I had one of Simon and Kamina with awesomesauce faces before, but I can't find it again for the life of me.

[identity profile] docsaico.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a senior in high school, my grades started dropping. I only had half days - my schedule was pretty lax - so I had a lot of free time. I spent just about all my time online, writing fanfic, reading F!S, talking to like-minded people on LJ. I stopped doing my homework cuz it was so boring. Three weeks before I was supposed to graduate, I found out that I was failing my math class. I'd had that teacher before, so I convinced him to let me try to bring up my grade before he told my parents. I worked my ass off, doing all my homework and anything extra I could do.

I finished with a B. All my other classes were at least C's or higher. I wanted to get into college, I didn't want to be one of those kids who loses their ambition once out of high school and does nothing with their lives. I want to be remembered when I'm gone. So I worked really hard, and it paid off. I was up a little later checking LJ, reading fanfic, writing, but I did get my homework done and I did pay attention in school and it worked for me. I wish I had better advice for you, but you can do this. You can just take more time to get your work done before getting online.

Trust me, I know it's hard, but the possibility of failure, to me, is the most terrifying thing I can think of. I don't want to be another nobody. I want one of my future books to be required reading in a high school English class. So despite the slacker in me, I'm gonna keep trying as hard as possible. Good luck to you, anon. I hope you can overcome this imbalance.

/not afraid to criticize the series or it's fans/

Really? When has she done that? I know I've heard Pattison finds the books and fans pathetic and creepy, but I've never heard anything outta KStew.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
No word in particular really. And yes, sex scenes.

It's more of just keeping a watchful eye on word choice in certain narration. Like ones that have that more formal tone and characters, yet they throw a cock in there. Or a pussy, too, ngl.

I guess as a woman, my mind fills in the gaps for me. You can have simple euphemisms and my mind will still be filling in SEXY COCK without it being written out. IDK, it's hard to explain.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. You said my point a bit more eloquently than I did haha.

[identity profile] morlockiness.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
i lol'd in real life

[identity profile] anivad.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I like you and I do this too.

[identity profile] honey-delilah.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I just got into the show, and I love him too. :3

I honestly think of characters like him when I think of the word 'moe'. I think he makes a much cuter tsundere archetype than like, Haruhi or any of those bitches from Love Hina.

[identity profile] dazzledfirestar.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently... because out of the 5000+ characters in the Marvel Universe, only Steve and Tony are allowed to ever have hot sex.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Psst. "Hetalia teaches me history" usually doesn't mean "I believe Hetalia is 100% factual". It usually means that it sparks an interest in people to go do some proper research on their own outside of class. It can also help really well with remembering dates of events. I'm usually terrible with historic dates, but Hetalia's helped me memorize a couple. Sure, there probably are some idiots that think Hetalia is completely factual, but that isn't all of us. I don't think it's even most of us.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
RIGHT YOU ARE.

On another note: if that ever actually happened in canon, I swear that single issue would outsell X-Men #1 in a fucking DAY.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Psst. Hetalia wasn't originally for kids. The series started off as a webcomic that was really niche and I believe mostly popular with the otaku/fujoshi demographic. It wasn't aimed at kids until Studio DEEN made the anime with the intention to put it on Kids Station. But even then, the primary audience is NOT children, even in Japan.

OP here.
I get what you say about 'chivalry' (though, I can say that in my fics, though I prefer that the girls not be hit, I would absolutely expect them to hit back).
But part of the reason I'm so confused is also because I think I just wouldn't get the same satisfaction out of whaling on a female character the way I do on the male ones.
On the other hand, I only have one major fandom, and in that fandom the character I identify the most with is male - which definitely contributes to writing about men more.

[identity profile] morlockiness.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
omg you read my mind. well, back when i drew fanart. but i do very much feel the same way about my original art.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I do have female characters I like very much, though I don't know how I'd write them, as in my major fandom my favored character is male. In original fic I haven't written much, but right now I'm looking at 3 main characters - one male, one female, and one who is basically male but started out nonhuman and has complicated stuff going on there.
I suppose I will find out how much I like to torture the woman :)

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
u mad?

Seriously though, what does everyone have against 4chan? /b/ =/= 4chan.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
How is this not a troll. Did you take a freaking screenshot of your screen instead of SAVE the file? I don't even understand how it is possible to genuinely be this bad at photoshop.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I could have written this, Anon. I know a lot of literature snobs, and when they start bitching about Twilight, I just tune them out so they won't lecture me. /:

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yesss this.
