Ugh yes I die a little inside every time I see this stuff on DA. How come people who don't know shit about drawing are the most eager to make tutorials??

Is that girl anorexic and bulimic? She's got the fat face and the too-skinny arms of both.

[identity profile] azure15.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I missing something, or is that picture not that bad? Yeah it's not amazing, but it's a hell of a lot better than I could do.

Plus everyone has to start somewhere. Why hate on someone for trying to help others? Also 'know your place?' Ouch.

I think a lot of the time they get requests from fans to draw those tutorials. I don't see much wrong with them making "Here's how I do stuff" posts in that case, but people who make "UBER ANIME TUTORIAL PART 1" things uninvited are self-important idiots who should visit conceptart.org and then cower in shame for the rest of their lives.

I understand wanting to learn from the more skilled people, but "know your place?"

Those words make imagine a great artist pushing less-skilled artists to the ground and kicking them while saying "Know your place, peasant!"

Well, I have no contact whatsoever with any kind of drawing artists in any fandom so I don't know if my rationale travels across but, generally speaking, it's sometimes less intimidating to try to learn something from someone who's not an expert. For example, if you have an F in math, it's sometimes easier to ask a person with a C to explain, not a person with an A.

Pretty pretentious for someone with no skill, saying "NOOO, you shouldn't doo it, it's wrong, I've seen lots of other people doing it".

I mean, I get a little eyerolly too when someone does not have a firm grasp on what they are trying to teach, but 'know your place' is pretty rude.

[identity profile] tehd.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Too harshly worded, but generally speaking I agree.

I don't know why you would feel "personally offended", though? I guess for me it is something I can easily go MEH at and then continue off doing what I do. Really, I am mostly worried at the people who follow every tutorial they see so diligently instead of trying to do things on their own.

ps. even in the bone-structure those fingers are so obviously broken...

[identity profile] seathing.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The phrasing on this is pretty harsh, but I'd have to agree. Whenever I see people who draw that badly, making a tutorial, I wince.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Eugh.
The character's face and arms make my eyes want to scream.

No, she should not be making tutorials.
Not even for coloring or hair.
Not every surface in a drawing should have the same overly smooth, plasticy texture like that.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Wish you didn't end it with a "know your place," but I agree with the sentiment. Some people just are not at the level to be throwing out tutorials, but they'll do it left and right, even if they're not requested. I'm staring at that pic you used, and I know that it's a tutorial for basic coloring, but all I can do is look at the girl's right arm going into her glove, and think, "OMFG, WHAT IS THAT ANGLE? IS IT BROKEN?"

(Anonymous) 2011-03-04 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure if I'm offended because of the wording, or the fact that the artist used is my friend. Go find a better tutorial and quit complaining.

Honestly, I've always hated these God complexes artists seem to get once their skills surpass someone else's. "Know your place" my ass

The colouring looks pretty until you realise there is no consistent light source. That's one of the first lessons of shading. Where is the light coming from? Above? Right? Left? If this artist is setting "homework" for people, they should learn to shade first.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the exact opposite problem... people constantly ask me to do tutorials but I don't want to do them because I really don't do anything special. I think if I did do a tutorial I would get looked down upon too by better artists

ext_562883: (no really!)

[identity profile] ssjumi.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as the tutorial doesn't say "That's how it's done" but "That's how I personally do it", I don't see a problem here.
AFAIK the majority of tutorials are made, because people actually request to know, how their favorite artists work.

I agree, though, that this very example doesn't look professional in any way, but like I said, as long as it doesn't claim to be professional... who cares? o_o

[identity profile] juukenshimimiru.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair people should know what they are talking about before teaching others, but jesus christ.

Who'd want to learn anything from someone as stuck up as you, either?

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, the way you said it is harsh, but I agree. :[

But then, you kinda gotta take into account that maybe they think they're alot better and they are so they don't see any reason why they shouldn't make a tutoral. When they develop more they may think differently.

Though after reading this person's tutorals...well, "know your place" doesn't sound too off the mark.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
who cares...?

i get that the tutorial is low-quality, but jesus christ some of the people in this thread are acting like they're paying her for it. you're "personally offended" over a bad art tutorial? really?

ftr, i do work very hard to study the fundamentals of art, and i very strongly urge people to do the same. i'm fine with people having a laugh about bad art (given that they don't personally harass the artist for it), and doling out bluntly honest constructive criticism. but i get so tired of this weird, self-important complex so many artists seem to have where they act like every crappy photoshop drawing is a slap to picasso's face. that tutorial was made by a weeaboo teenager on deviantart, and the only people who are going to follow it are other weeaboo teenagers, and if any of these people decide they want to be more serious about art then they'll grow out of this and pursue better lessons. CALM DOWN.

I agree. In the Warriors fandom, it's beyond ridiculous how many "Cat Anatomy!" tutorials there are by artists who apparently can't tell the difference between cat anatomy and dog/cow/horse/fucked-up anatomy.

[identity profile] nataliadarimini.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, hi, there you are! You're the one I kept waiting for to tell me I have no business making tutorials! I put off doing one for a long time, even though I had several requests, because I thought you would be there pointing out that since I am not perfect there is nothing to be learned from seeing the way that I make something. But you were here the whole time.

Well. Now that we've finally met, I guess I can only say that 1) failing to know one's place is one of the best things an artist can do to get better, and 2) if you don't think that you can get better from looking at this person's tutorial then all you have to do is not use it. Their art is right there; if you like it then look at how they make art, if you don't then go look at something else. The Internet is big enough to have something on it you do not like and that's okay.
