Sorry. Dealing with a cold that, when I cough, convulses my fingers to type random letters. Anyway.

I agree with this secret in the sense that I think Hermione should've been with a different character. Not gonna say who, though. That'd cause a pairing war. -coughhack-harry,totallyharry-cough-

At the same time, I think it's a little...I don't know, unfair to say Hermione /deserved better/. Ron is a very fine character and completely suitable as a partner for Hermione. I would've written differently, but I'm not JKR, and I enjoyed the R/Hr storyline anyway. Just because you think Hermione should be with someone else doesn't make Ron automatically inferior in all ways.

Can we just... send them away somewhere? 8(

Well, if a person who dating someone really feels they could do better, for whatever reason, they're entitled to end the relationship. I mean, why stick around if someone isn't what you would consider equal/or makes you feel good?

However, you're right that there can be a shallow note to it; only that's generally when it's coming from other people. Of course, there are the voices of genuine concern when a person is in a poor relationship (abusive or simply dating someone who's somehow taking advantage/using their partner) but most of the time it's coming from nosy brats who feel like you're better-looking/smarter/funnier/cooler/richer/more awesome than your partner, and thus, "YOU COULD DO SO MUCH BETTER! WHO CARES IF THEY'RE FULFILLING YOU'RE EMOTIONAL NEEDS AND YOU LOVE THEM. DATE SOMEONE HOTTER!"

You see it a lot with celebrity couples and fictional couples. That's mostly because there's a WHOLE LOT of projecting going on.

driveby icon love!

Wow, this is a first for me. XD

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a flawed episode in many ways, yeah. I pretty much only watch the "Sherlock and Watson walking around" bits of it. Didn't realize that one had different writers though. FS, always educational :P :D

[identity profile] anindeliblemark.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I can understand the allegations of racism in the episode (though I didn't really pick up on them myself), but the main thing is: "The Blind Banker" is just a terrible episode. Ugh.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
... I shouldn't have laughed. ._.

I find so much meaning in his story, too. I'm glad it helped you to get through such a hard, hard time. ♥

A) steampunk hamlet is FUCKING STUPID and no one will watch/read your... thing
B) hamlet/horatio is in the original! seriously there is lots of subtext that billy put in there on purpose, it's not like slashers are making this up completely. so... way to remove an element of the original for no real reason? lol

You forgot the desire to fap.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So, if you understand why I wouldn't want it, would you still participate in slash stuff? Just curious.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Go fuck your mother.

Please, with an egotistical secret like this ('I know it's going to turn out well and maybe even be popular oh pretty pretty please I want the popular crowd to like me'), you are BEGGING for all the spite you're getting in these comments.

[identity profile] you-speak-lies.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not set when the books were set, though. If they're going to update it then they should actually update it and take into account the fact that England today is significantly different than the England the book characters lived in.

...are you me?

I remember getting into epic fights over who got to be Kimberly...rarely won but those few times made it worth it. lol

my country has still suffer being portrayed wrongly on its 150 anniversary by the creator, and fans who don't care about any history but their own country.

And I'm still waiting for my first Pokemon. Hogwarts is so overrated.

Just, kidding, I'd love to go to Hogwarts as well, or get a Golden Ticket. That's a really cute secret :)

That's never been the point of the Bechdel test though. It was a comic strip about a lesbian who said that SHE wouldn't go see movies that didn't include two women talking about something other than a man.

This is not supposed to be the be-all and end-all of feminist critique of media. It's a good shorthand for "JESUS CHRIST WOULD IT BE HARD TO HAVE MULTIPLE FEMALE CHARACTERS IN YOUR STUPID SHOW" because the fact that so MUCH of media fails the test says something very serious about the way media is written-- there's no rule that says that if you have two extras discussing something plot related they have to be two men or a man and a woman, unless they're talking about some dude, but that's the way it is. The test is a quick and dirty yardstick, and many of the people who talk about it use it as a jumping off point, a way to go "this starts of a generically problematic level." Because the real point of of the Test for a lot of people is that most things don't pass it.

Passing the Bechdel Test does not make something good, redeeming or particularly feminist (SatC passes it). Not passing it does not make something bad or unfeminist. It just makes it lacking in female characters.

(Also, much as I love Sherlock Holmes, the fact is that it's a cockfest. And while it was originally a cockfest, it was also originalyl write in the 1890s. I have no problem holding a remake from the 2000s to different standards.)

Every time I see that series, I have the urge to write an engineering-geek-tastic book called "City of Concrete." XD
