I'm so very sorry it happened to you. Fuck, I'm sorry it happens all over the place. But believe me, there are Hetalia fans that are sickened by it too.

I'm in Hetalia fandom, I never rped or plan on rping anything like this, I use characters mostly to portray some light or funny events and amusing political situations. I don't mind dark things as long as they're not full of history fail and as long as they're not used as an excuse for smut or cheap angst. I hate everything that takes recent tragedy and uses it just for fandom entertainment. I understand and respect people's opinions when they say Hetalia offends them - they have right to feel this way. But - and it's not addressed to the OP sine they didn't say anything like that, just to some people in this thread - I do think it's unfair to say "I hate all Hetalia fans/fandom" because really, there are sensible people too. Plenty of them, in fact. But we're mostly quiet or in my case away from the big part of the fandom because of all that jackassery. Because it bothers us too and fighting with so much stupid is pointless. I know, I tried.

So I'm sorry again, OP. My thoughts are with you, your "friends" are dicks and believe me when I say that it's surely the opinion that many people liking hetalia share. It never even crossed my mind to think of Kiku when I heard about the earthquake in Japan, I was scared and worried for the real nation and real people, I still am. Don't let the jerks bring you down. Even in this fandom, you're not alone.

I'm in the fandom too, and while I've seen some people behave like this, they were a minority by far.

Yeah, we know what the bechdel test is. But this is a show that is firmly fixed in the POV of two male characters. It follows them from place to place and concentrates on the things that effect them.

All the other characters, male and female, interact with the main characters and only the main characters. Even the male secondary characters don't interact with anyone else. Even the villains and the victims of the don't talk to people other than the male leads.

I have the "you abandoned me" mindset, too, and I'd be the first person to tell you that it's full of shit.

It's hard not to take it personally when someone you love leaves fandom, but most often, you have nothing to do with your friends' decisions to leave fandom. They weren't abandoning you, even if it feels like it, and it doesn't mean that they don't care about you [as OP's secret clearly indicates].

So I understand your position, but if it happens again, you don't necessarily have to let the person into your heart again just to acknowledge them and not completely shut them out.

I don't know... I've written fanfic before, and I've found that it's an amazing experience that lets me really understand the original author's craft and come to appreciate her/him and her/his characters so much more. It's really not a bad thing at all, OP!

Me, too. To be fair, my best friend always wanted to be Trini and we usually played with boys because most of the girls didn't want to play Power Rangers.

That said, the few times we did play with other girls, I'm sure I argued my way into being Kimberly. I was kind of a bossy kid. So, I probably should feel like a dick.

I, too, would let the OP anon be Kimberly if we were playing Power Rangers now. :)

It's not done in the same way I don't think. With ~china town~ it was all stereotypical over the top Chinese music and dramatic cut aways that, to me, came across as LOOK AT THE SCARY CHINESE PEOPLE.

There's a planetarium, the back of a cab, a few museums, a few private residences, a car dealership, a swimming pool...

So, yeah, basically. While the planetarium is dark (for obvious reasons), the criminals are otherwise in places that you don't associate with mysterious and dangerous.

No--a remake of Sherlock Holmes with the main characters being other than they are in previous versions is pushing it. You branch too far into AU territory and you lose hard-core fans. More female characters? Sure. More characters from other races? Sure. More characters with any sort of variance? Sure. But I'm pretty sure--as an adaptation--that it would be less successful with a female Sherlock, black Watson, and gay Moriarty.

Because the literary world and how popular a book gets are two very predictable things.

You say you're writing a novel, but don't mention if you have a publisher or people who are willing the publish it. Just because you write a novel doesn't mean a publisher is going to take it and publish it right on the spot. You only think it's going to be amazing because you write it and yeah, real authors don't run around saying "MY BOOK IS GOING TO DO SO WELL".

Chances are, if it does get published, people will read it, set it aside, and forget all about it. You don't have to worry about a fandom, you're going to have to worry about whether people actually pick up the fucking book. Because everyone and their mother writes books nowadays.

Get over yourself.
